Post Up Your NEW Gear ...

Christmas swag :)- OR Novo beanie, probably now the lightest beanie I own 0.7 oz; Stanley 16 oz vacuum bottle- the cup separates into two cups in case you have someone along; Swiss Bianco bushcrafter; BD Spot headlamp

Can you recommend a few beanies with decent performance for me M.W. ? I have a bit of a pumpkin head, XL motorcycle helmet.

my head is on the smaller side, so my top picks aren't going to help much, but the Mountain Hardwear Micro Dome runs a little big and it's offered in a Large size (as well as S/M)- also Outdoor research also offers some of their beanies in S/M and Large- I'd stay away from the one size fits all ones as beanies generally fit a little snug to begin w/

MSR MicroRocket. Pictured with Pocket Rocket for reference. Didn't have to pay full price from REI with a gift card.

More compact, lighter, sturdier. Should serve well as my canister backpacking stove.

Next month, I'll pick up a Ti-Tri Sidewinder from Trail Designs and a pot more appropriate for it than my SnowPeak Trekker 700.

I’m doing a lot of work in a place where there’s a history of people being taken. I have been getting very specialized training in escape and evasion and I got a few pieces of gear to aid in this type of situations. The interesting part is finding hiding places for them, and then having them end up in the washing machine.

Heres some of my new gear. Sorry about the phone pics.
Emberlit and Gossman Polaris. I've only boiled water for noodles and coffee so far with Emberlit. I really like this thing. The Polaris was picked up in a trade with a forum member, so its new to me anyway.

I just picked this up yesterday. Gossman 5 inch A2 Tusker with natural micarta and red liners. I've been wanting this knife for a long time and I'm looking forward to giving it a good workout.

Got a package in the mail yesterday, haven't had time to open it yet. I was going to resist until the weekend, when I have time to do the initial set up, but my resolve is breaking down... :D

CF Duomid with Sil Solo Inner    So excited.

Haha, pics to come soon! I opened the package earlier and oh'd and ah'd, but there's no point posting pics until I get it up; right now it looks like just a bunch of green crinkly plastic stuff in a stuff-sack :D

I finally used my Cuben ground sheet in a shelter last week, and it still just looked like some crinkly gray stuff.
Was kinda hoping it would feel different, sleeping on a $100 bill...

Haha, yeah, no kidding. That's the ZPacks one right? 1oz/yd^2 cuben? How is the puncture and abrasion resistance so far? I might try one later to pair with this Duomid, but for now I wanted to play it safe.

Well, it's lived in a ZipLoc bag, and only been used in a shelter with a floor, so I have no idea! They advertise it as waterproof and puncture resistant. I'm sure it's fine, but for the price, I consider it a specialty item. Not going to worry over it when it does get used, but I'm not going to use it unless it suits the purpose I bought it for, either. It will be strictly for backpacking when I'm not using the innernet on the TT Notch, or that rare occasion I use a shelter(that was only the second time I've slept in one in my life). The other times I've used the Notch with no inner net, I was basically car camping, and used my BCUSA ground sheet.

Yes, Zpacks "Solo" 1oz/sqyd.

Yeah, what I've come to understand is that going with cuben for a groundsheet is suited for very specific, minimally abrasive or rough circumstances. A 0.75oz cuben tarp overhead - excellent application. The same or lighter cuben as a groundsheet, probably not the best. 1.0oz and heavier, on the other hand, sounds like it may/should be robust enough for average use as a groundsheet with careful site prep, based on the experience of others and manufacturers. For my uses, I didn't want to worry about trashing a material which will see more rough surface contact than my shaped overhead tarp should, particularly one as expensive as cuben. That's why I went with the silnylon solo inner for my duomid vs the cuben offering. And when not using a mesh inner for bugs or bathtub floor for added water protection, then I'll be using a tyvek or polycryo groundsheet. Hell, I border on obsessive with keeping my gear in good shape to prolong life, so I might even use a polycryo groundsheet under the silnylon inner floor...but that seems a bit neurotic and overkill, especially if the goal is functional weight reduction.

Now, when I have extra money to drop on a heavier-weight cuben groundsheet like yours for trips where I don't need bug protection, then I'll be picking one up just to be stupid light with a cuben shaped tarp shelter and cuben groundsheet (and will be very careful about site selection and clearing) :D You have pretty good reasoning with your Notch system  Like you said, use it in the right situation, and when you do use it, just use it with common sense and don't worry about it

Thanks again!

No pics but I ordered a Gobspark firesteel the other day and today I bought a stainless Olicamp space saver because...well, just because. Gear is half the fun.

Ended up with a 3 day pack, the STOMP pack (with inserts) and the CamelBak MedBak insert. Helluva trade! Life is good!

scored these from Sierra Trading Post about a month ago, Atlas race snowshoes (22x7.5", 18 oz)- retail is a little north of $300, w/ their discount and a 40% coupon I got them for $120 :)

I've "run" about 20 miles in these the last three days and I'm here to tell you that running in snowshoes, even these that are made for running- in unpacked snow, is hard, very hard
