haha! i'm still in the process of experimentation and weeding out the gear that's why all the purchases. this year will slow down significantly since i've settled on which shelters/backpacks/etc. i really like and i'll just be buying duplicates or replacing worn items as i go from now on.

i only started hiking 4 years ago - jansport backpack, hardware store tarp, home depot wooden dowels as my trekking poles, etc. :D

I was just pickin' at ya too! I actually enjoy seein' what you get in! My overtime's been capped, so I can't buy as much gear as I used to, so I actually check this thread to live vicariously through others. You need to invest in a good hammock & come up to the Linville gorge. Think grand canyon but greener.

Had a Tramontina 18" machete come in the mail today. Made in Brazil and so far I'm pretty impressed with it. Supposedly they don't come with a totally sharpened edge and I was ok with that. No problem for me to refine the edge. Low and behold it came with nice wide ground bevels and sharp enough to slice paper.Took it for a spin through some thick cactus and sliced em like a laser. Not a bad set-up for about $20.

i know you were just busting my chops :) i like showing those pics too because i see people sometimes over-think this whole overnighter thing and all the gear questions they have and they think they need to spend big bucks to be comfortable.

First of birthday haul When I was going over a couple things I wanted I mentioned this would be interesting to play with my Lovely wife took it upon herself to buy it for me. edge was way better than the last cold steel machette I had
More to come

nice! most of my reloading equipment is made by lee. i miss it sometimes - it's very relaxing.

Got this near the end of fall and it has been in the bottom of my pack on hikes and ski tours since. Had a semi emergency last weekend where it came in handy. I was on an over night ski tour and one of my companions sleeping bag wasn't warm enough due to unexpectedly cold temperatures. He used it over his bag and it kept him super warm. Its light and small enough that it isn't a burden to carry in case of an emergency, and I was sure glad I had it this time! We'll see about getting it packed up to a similar size again :/

Great buy, I carry one of those too -- one in my pack and one in the GF's actually  If there was a possibility we could be caught out for some reason in nasty weather, I think the combination of blizzard survival bags, insulating layers, and a bothy bag offer a pretty solid safety margin at minimal bulk and weight. Also, we each carry, at minimum, an AMK two person heatsheet and beeswax tealight. For mild weather day hikes, we each carry just the survival bag and an amk heatsheet w/ beeswax tealight. Good to know your buddy was able to employ the blizzard bag to great benefit.

I haven't unpacked mine yet, but good luck getting yours back into a brick again! Seems like a vacuum sealer would come in handy. I need to pick a blizzard bag up for the sole purpose of testing and experimenting with, but they're not the most inexpensive things to purchase if you value the initial compactness. When I do get a spare to test, I'll probably just pack it back up as small as I can and relegate it to car kit duty.

Yea he was at the point where he was shivering and within 10 minutes of putting the survival bag on over his other sleeping bag he was toasty! We were both shocked at how well it worked. I actually do have a vacuum sealer and was thinking the same thing. I'll let you know how it works.

No pics, as it's a 4-6 week wait, but I just dropped the duckets on a HDS 250 rotary light. I can't wait! It's the first of only 2 major purchases I have planned for 2014.

Sounds good

Roy, those shovels are stout lil beasties.

Bowman, nice score! Would love to pick up a HDS one of these days; they're quality. I just dropped a more affordable amount on the new Zebralight SC52w-L2. Can't wait.

sold my black zxr to a friend months ago and regretted it...received this one a few days ago...now i found out today kifaru discontinued the model itself so this one is one of the last ones made.

The forager's harvest is the outdoor edible book! Nothing else I've come across compares! It's the only one I've seen with pics showing different seasons of wild edibles. Definitely worth the duckets!

I need to learn my plants. Definitely lacking in that area.
