I recently got yelled at for using big words too. :(

I had to burn some bee keeping equipment and some widow makers today, so the camera came along for teh ride.

Mora allround knife was the striker for this batch with pine needles as the tinder.

I really like dryer lint as a tinder, it catches about the quickest I have see and burn well. we keep all are lint in a bag by the dyer so I have a good amount of it, I was having fun so I through a good size hand full in my forge(might as well use it for something) and I didn't even get a good spark, I thought I missed to tell you the truth and woof the ball went up .

add spark and grab the camera, it went that fast,

thanks Ken, is always good to practice the skills you think you have down pretty good.

Great thread!!

I was fortunate to have Good Friday off work so I headed out by myself to Carson for some fatwood harvesting and fire practice. I went back to a place that River-8 took me a couple weeks ago where we found a great fatwood stump.

077.jpg

I harvested a few good pieces and set out to make some kindling.

079.jpg

I used the bace & brace system, both base and brace are fatwood.

080.jpg

Next came some tinder curls, I employed my trusty Izula for this job.

082.jpg

I used a metal match that was given to me by Rescue Mike, on one of our outings I was having a very difficult time getting the fire started and Mike gave me some great advice. I have been practicing ever since.

087.jpg

Then I just sat back and enjoyed the fire and all the sounds of nature.

I have been fortunate enough to hang out with some very knowledgable folks, River-8, Rescue Mike, Bill Siegle, and Safetyman to name a few. I have learned a lot from everyone and appreciate the help that has been given to me! A little over a year ago I would not have felt comfortable enough to get out by myself and practice the skills that I have learned.

Excellent pictured everybody. This thread is now self-sustaining!

WOOT! what a great Easter Sunday! almost a 100 mm of rain fell on the squamish area mountains!

I will do a full trip report in another thread (got almost 10 GB of HD video, and photo to still upload...)

but here is my fire from the trip.

I am about 30KM up a old logging road, it was raining HARD. I was warm though.

here is my fire, started with PJCB, cedar shavings and cedar kindling, from a cedar stump. I added alder branches and had a very sweet smelling fire, that ended up getting VERY hot.

pics uploading, gimmie 5 minutes...ALMOST UPLOADED!

PS: Snakedoc, nice SOD! come on over to the SCRAPYARD and say hi!

the whole time i was splitting wood with my Becker/Kabar BK2
it was P**SING rain, hard enough to soakme right thru 9i was still warm though, god bless the ol CDN Forces fleece and 5.11 Tactical clothing!)

you can still see the dental cottons/vaseline firestarters

I have already had a few fires this weekend but didn't take any pic's, today I had a new reason to make a fire so I busted out the camera. Don't have my JK's yet so I had to bust out the work horse.

Glock field knife getting beat on once again :D

After I had enough small peices to get it started I worked on my tinder. I used my reground TOPS knife to shave up some fat wood then wraped it up in some fibers of manila rope. The manila rope has a oil on it and makes a great fire starter.
Picture405.jpg

I had some trouble with my fire steel, the sparks went in every direction but on the tinder. I had my brother make the fuzz sticks.
Picture406.jpg

It took a minute but I finally got a spark to hit it.... Success!!

Picture408.jpg

After the fire was nice and hot we added some charcoal. Should have stuck with wood though.
Picture409.jpg

In the end I had to put some more wood in, the big fat juicy steaks were cooking too slow. :p :D

Well the obligatory Easter brunch put a damper on my plans to hike today, so I stumbled across this thread and decided to jump in.......

At least I'm not the only guy who makes fires for the sheer fun of it in my BBQ.....:D

I somewhat cheated I guess, I took down a small cat enclosure off the side of my house that I just moved into today (it was an outside kennel with 2x4's spanning the top, held together with chicken wire so I guess the cats couldnt get out of.......it was kind of wierd), so I had the advantage of using some dried wood. :D

Trying out my new Busse's

DSCN0323.jpg

I used some random wood that I found in the back yard that turned out to be extremely saturated with pitch, it would take a spark nicely and stayed lit for a very long time.

These are the remains of one of the 2x4's
