Post your ONE survival hint here....

Don't confuse your ambision with your ability. an Australian Perished his car broke down in a remote station country. It broke down at a wind mill. He tried to walk across country in heat. He only got about 20 km of 80. The rescue crew found his vehicle in a ouple of days. SO stay put when you have supplies (water)and let people know where your going. I think this gets back to the previous coments about reviewing your situation. That poor bugger died of pride. I did some land search training years ago and the hardest people to find are the survivalist(hunter). he does not know he is lost he is surviving. They do also live longest usually.

I agree with that! more than this- it amazes me how wide a gap there is between believing that you can handle an emergency survival situation and actually handling an emergency survival situation. That gap is called the fear factor! My hint therefore is to confront fear in a training session to prepare yourself for the real thing:D

Those little bottles of alcohol based hand sanitizer are great if you're having trouble getting your fire started. Just squirt a bit on your tinder bundle and POOF! Be careful if you do this when there's still a good bit of light. . . alcohol flames can be practically invisible in bright light. Even if it doesn't look lit you should feel for heat before you reach in to adjust your tinder or anything like that. I haven't used this trick since I started packing PJ cotton balls, but I still carry hand sanitizer anyhow.

A folding pole Spear is light will fit in your pack and will allow you to eat like a King if you're anywhere near water.

I grew up spear fishing.
Fish might not take bait but they are easy to spear.

wear or have with you adequate clothing for the worst conditions you may face.

I think this may be the most single violated rule in the book. In these days of climate control everywhere, I see people in cars in mid winter dressed in very little. Its an attitude that they are just running from the house to thier SUV and don't need a warm coat. Not even thinking of a flat or breakdown and having to walk in the cold. No forthought at all.

My "one survival tip" is.......Mind Set.

Know that will survive and that you'll do whatever it takes to survive. Broken down, it translates to:

THINK !

Keep your mind working.

Think outside the box. (Be resourceful)

Keep a positive attitude.

If you have that, then all else is supplemental.

Take your children camping.

Of all the things my father taught me, camping and driving is the most useful.
And the most fun.

always carry a personal survival kit(and know how to use the contents), even on the shortest planned hikes.

Space Blanket, You can use this compact item for alot of stuff - Shelter, blanket, signal, water catch, poncho. So many uses for this compact package!

Be resourceful, utilize everything around you. In a bad situation mans rules don't apply and if you think you're at the top of the food chain..... think again.

If going on a trip, let at least two people know where you are going, and how you are getting there/itinerary. Never hurts to have a back up :)

Own your skills.

I've read a lot about survival, and, like many, can recite stuff, but NOTHING beats going out with a skill and trying it under varying conditions.

Example: Go out and try lighting cattail down or cedar bark with a sparker (and no accelerant) in mid winter. Harder than they make it sound in the books....

Can you go out in a rain storm and have a shelter up in 5 minutes?

Can you make hook from nature and catch a trout?

Mine is: use little visine dispenser (fits easily into an altoids tin) and fill it with bleach. It dispenses drops easily and you can add bleach to water to kill any organisms. I think it is 2 drops of bleach per gallon, but I'm not sure. That one little bottle will help you clean alot of water.

I swear by bleach and that is a brilliant idea...

You folks have not learned a thing from Bear Grylls' 'Man vs Wild' show... carry a good MasterCard!
