Mine is: use little visine dispenser (fits easily into an altoids tin) and fill it with bleach. It dispenses drops easily and you can add bleach to water to kill any organisms. I think it is 2 drops of bleach per gallon, but I'm not sure. That one little bottle will help you clean alot of water.

Always carry a fire starting method (mine is a firesteel and some fatwood) and some rope. They take almost no space and can really help tons.

When you are in a bad spot, stop and take inventory. Once you know exactly what you have, you may end up making different decisions than you might have otherwise.

There is no substitute for experience. You can have all of the gear in the world. If you are unfamiliar with it then it is close to useless. Get out and practice with those toys.

Every person who ever lived through or died from a survival situation woke up that morning with the same thought: "Today is going to be an ordinary day."

carry items that serve more than one purpose, thus save space/weight, ie. extra long shoelaces can be cut to a still usable length and give you some cord for a fire bow. A necklace pendant might work as a fishing spinner etc...

Get in shape and stay in shape. All the gear in the world isn't going to help you if you're in such sorry shape that you get out of breath just going from the lazyboy to the refrigerator. :D

Something I have always noticed, cigerette smokers can always lite up no matter what the weather so fire steels and bows and all that is great I think to get a fire hang with a smoker hahah. Really though the cheap lighters take hardly any space and easy to carry and maybe a couple tender tabs to catch the flame. Ishi loved matches.

I like Any Cal's thought. When the chips are down and the SHTF. Stop sit down, get a grip and a survey of your situation. Panic has probably killed more people that everything else combined.

My other tip is to dress for the worse possible situation that you may encounter. If you are dressed well for the climate and have a Knife and a way to start a fire, you can make it pretty well. As someone else mentioned, test your equipment and know how it works and if it will work. Another good tip is to see if you can work things with your good arm tied behind your back. Or a Leg. Survival often happens just from being injured. Don't assume that you will only be lost but also may have some degree of injury.

Stay Alive????? Not a bad tip either:)

Carry at least minimal gear on your person. Packs and bags can be seperated from you during bad days. The firesteel, knife, compass, or whistle in your pocket may be the only one you have. Remember in the movie The edge when the pack with the flares was lost during the bear chase?

I don't know about the Don't take a women, My wife is the most cool under pressure person I have ever met. Absolutely nothing rattles her and that includes catching rattle snakes BY HAND!!!!

Always be aware of your surroundings and the situation you are in...no matter how mundane it may present itself.

if you're in such sorry shape that you get out of breath just going from the lazyboy to the refrigerator. :D
then move the fridge next to the lazyboy so you don't have to get up. :D:D

Seriously, my advice is bring a cell phone, its amazing sometimes where you can get a signal.

Learn all the useful plants in your area. Rope, soap, food and medicine can all be within easy reach.
