Did it ever happen to you?
Lots of threads on this already, of course.

Some people freak at the sight of a knife outside of the kitchen. Some knife knuts like to freak out the sheeple by waving impressive blades around unnecessarily.

epic thread win!

my stand in boss one day saw that i had a knife clipped to my pocket, and told me i'd be fired if i wore it again. i work as a bouncer and i guess having a gerber paraframe in your pocket means you have a dangerous weapon and the bar could be sued, me arrested etc for pulling a knife on someone should it come out of my pocket in the midst of dragging some rowdy patron out the door....

Not too long ago I pulled out my little kershaw chive at work to open a package, and a female coworker looked over and exclaimed "oh my god! You can't have that here, it's a weapon!!" She then reached in a drawer and pulled out a large handled razor utillity knife and said "Here, use this"

I just looked at her like she was slow, and told her no thanks my "weapon" works just fine, and by the way, that blade your holding is probably more dangerous than my little folder.

-Another time here at work a lady saw that I was on a forum dedicated to knives. She got all concerned and asked me "Do you have some kind of knife fetish? ...Are you a cutter? That's scarry, but there is a hotline you can call to get help for that." ....uuuuhhhh WTF?

I was at Applebees...and I whipped out my Extra Large Espada to cut the string that was hanging off the sweater of an old lady at the next table...and she freaked!

Sheeple! What is their problem?

I generally never take one out in public these days and I keep mine concealed so I don't have many issues. ;)

I have had employers say things to me before when using them at work though.

Out in the Woods etc I haven't had any issues with fixed blades or folders.

stare em right in the eyes, "no knives no cutting, makes jack goooo craaaaaaaazy.

Haven't had the opportunity to use this since I moved more out into the country. I always either carry my buck110 or leatherman wave, with the occasional kershaw cyclone or spyderco endura.

Hah, that made me laugh :D Once in my junior year of highschool, I was on the For sale section here looking at an xm-18. The next day I got called down to the office and the principle brought up a screen shot of it. "why are you looking at this? This is a weapon! You can get detention for this!" He proceed to make me empty my pockets (i wasn't carrying any of course) and phoned my mother. She explained that I am a collector and sharpener.
My mother then called my father and my father called the principle. Evidently, my Father was screaming at the principle saying, "What do you think he is going to do? Give someone a papercut!?"..... I didn't get detention :D

Yes, it happened to me recently. I posted the incident on another thread and I wanted to know others' experiences. To review: my incident happened in the post office where I picked up a package. I always ask if they have a box cutter which but they always say somebody is using it. So I take out my persistence and start to cut open the package. A woman took a double take and started to watch me like a hawk watching a chicken. When I took out the contents of the package(it was a small fixed blade made my a smith in some other part of the country) she immediately made a beeline for one of the PO employees. I didn't hear what she said but the employees laughed out and said(this i heard clearly) that I was a hobbyist and that they knew me well(I live 2 blocks away from the PO).

The woman had a deflated look that was worth a lot to me. :D

The school actually gave you hell for that?

When I went to school, people got away looking at worse things.

As for my "sheeple" story, I was using my Emerson to open beer bottles at a party. Some guy comes up to me and tells me not to do it in the future (he wasn't the host for one, while there wasn't a bottle opener on hand.)

I popped open my BM 940 one time in front of our Corporate Attorney and she was pretty startled. I simply finished opening the package, put the knife away, and continued with our conversation like it was no big deal and the situation was forgotten. Calm competence is key.

Didn't do it again tho.

I went to 6 Flags over TX several years ago. They have metal detectors at the entrances, which I was unaware of. They prohibit concealed carry, but I saw and read nothing about knives.

I had a Spyderco Police and a CS mini-tanto (fixed blade) with me, both TX legal.

The little old lady at the security checkpoint had all kinds of heatburn with my tanto, but didn't give my Police a second look, even though it's almost an inch longer, OAL.

She asked me "Don't you know any better than to bring something like THIS to a place where there are children?!"

I think most people have no trouble with knives if they see you use one for a practical purpose. For example; I've used my Emerson Bowie folder for cutting through a string for an older lady shopkeeper who couldn't find her scissors, so that she could separate some beads she was selling me. Of course I opened the folder with both hands and she didn't even blink. I've also pulled out folders to cut twine in lumberyards ,again the staff seemed to have no problem with that whatsoever.
Knives aren't 'exotic' and I think that if you use them around others in a matter of fact manner, most people won't think anything of it. If someone does make a comment my fallback is always; "I used to be in Boy Scouts [it's even true in my case] and they always told us to be prepared"

I freak out at the term "sheeple"

If you want to convince people that knives are useful tools and encourage people to welcome your use and carrying of those tools, a good first step would be to stop ACTING LIKE A TOOL and using overused and played out goofy little pun insults to describe people who don't have the same perspective as you.

"Sheeple" probably have derogatory terms for guys like us that carry knives. Perhaps their use of these terms stems from their lack of understanding for us.

Do you suppose there would be any chance for a productive exchange of information that might possibly lead to education and understanding for one another if one of these "sheeple" started a conversation with you in which they referred to you as some derogatory term akin to "sheeple"?

I think we could do better for ourselves...

I had a great one in a first-year philosophy class.

We ended up breaking up into groups and having a class discussion about a) schools banning head dress on school grounds, but allowing Muslim students to wear the hijab, and b) schools allowing Sikh students to carry their Kirpan on school property while simultaneously banning other knives from the premises. This discussion got pretty heated, with many Sikh and Muslim students participating in the discussion, but it generally stayed quite civil.

At one point, the girl seated next to me spoke up and said, "Look, as far as I'm concerned, anyone who carries a knife around with them, religious or not, is a f**king PSYCHO. I mean, like, seriously, what kind of freak carries a weapon??? Hellooo!"

Then she turned to me and said, "You know what I mean, right?"
I replied, "Oh, I totally agree. I don't understand why more schools don't have a zero tolerance policy for that kind of thing. I mean, kids walking around with weapons? That's just unacceptable!" :p

All while my Kershaw Cyclone was clipped to my pocket...
