What do you guys think of this? I've been using berkley fireline original fused braid on my spinning reel and HATE IT. It makes knots and just doesn't cast well. No more flat braid for me. So i picked up 220 yards of 6lb spiderwire supermono ez for the spinning reel and 150 yards of 50lb (12lb diamerer) powerpro moss green braid. It's round and ive heard its great. Spiderline was 4.50 and the powerpro was 13. Anyone else use either of these?

What lb test did you have in the Fireline and how long have you used it?

Fireline's stated breaking strain is wrong, it's actually double what it says on the pack. 14lb breaks at over 20lb, 20lb breaks at over 40lb and 30lb breaks at over 50lb.

Compare diameters of Fireline against other lines and you'll also see that 20lb Fireline will be roughly the same thickness as your 50lb Power Pro.

Fireline does soften slightly with use and I reckon it has more abrasion resistance than other lines.

Anyway....both your Power Pro and Spiderwire are good brands, although I've heard of some inconsistent batches of Power Pro slipping by (this was on stripersonline) but I wouldn't worry about it.

Can I ask what fishing you'll be doing, lure weights etc...

Well, I got the 50# due to the fact that its the same diameter as 12lb mono. The #20 fireline is the same diameter as 8 mono. I think my issue is since it was the original fireline it was flat, ans it was just horrible on my spinning rod. It did fine on the baitcaster, but baitcasters and spinning rods also have the line come off differently. So i'm just going to switch back to mono on the spinning rod. Maybe when i get more money i'll buy some powerpro for my spinning rod but ive had it with the braid for now. I'll be fishing trout, perch, crappie and other smaller fish with the spinning rod and bass, pickerel and maybe cats with the baitcaster.

Uhh idk. It's a shallow spool, holds 100 yds of 6lb.

thats where you screwed up.. all spinning spools tell you what diameter line you should have. if it only says 6lb then you only use 6lb. some say 8-12lb so you use 8-12lb... you have a small reel. you need to stick with 6lb diameter line. you doubled it and you payed the price for it. there is a good reason why the put the recommended diameter line on them... you line issues was more than likely caused by line twist. you got line twise due to using the wrong diameter line. hard lesson i had to learn as well. follow this and i promise you will have far less issues with your spin rods..

power braid is good braid for the $$. i have never had an issue with it. i have never had an issue with spider wire too. in fact i have reeled in 80lb water drenched stumps from catfishing with it..

edit:.. if your fireline (the flat) was 6lb on your 6lb spin reel then yeah the shape of it does overlap sometimes. use the power braid it circular. not flat like the others (if my memory serves me)... to be honest what i LOVE to use on spin reels from 4lbs to 8lbs is the Yo Zuri Hybrid... look at the avg break lbs.. the 4-8lbs are the best. the only bad thing is lbs over 8 it starts to get stiffer bc its a hybrid of flouro and something else (cant remember). check this

I dont like braids. To keep knots from coming undone I had to use Superglue.I dont want to carry a tube of superglue all the time. The tangles are more difficult to undo than mono. Braid is highly visible , so you get fewer bites. Or you can tie a leader, and that means more knots. More knots equals greater chance of failure .Zero stretch lines cut my fingers on hooksets. So I stick with mono. I like Triple Fish camouflaged line a lot.

troof... i had only used braid on a few catfish rods back in the day. i switched to Berkely big game bc A. its cheap and strong and B. i can break the line if i get hung and not break the rod trying to undo the hung up lure. i do use braid on my C-rig bc you need a leader anyway and i can use the braid to help feel the bottom. over all i am not a big fan of braid. i love yo zuri hybrid for 4-8lbs test and anything above that i use a good somewhat high priced mono ( pline, triple fish, et etc).. i do use flouro some. esp for leaders.

btw what kind of knots did you use on your braid? never had mine come undone but i also wet all my knots before setting them. makes a world of difference

I used the trilene and palomar knots . I like Berkely Big Game a lot also. Very strong.

if you use braid again use the improved clinch and wet the knot before setting it. it will hold and hold very very well. i have bent many hooks with braid.. many many hooks. another reason why i do not use braid much anymore

I think Berkley did a sneaky thing when stating the thickness of Fireline. As it's a flat line they gave the stated thickness of it's thinnest portion, not at it's thickest portion. Imagine the shape of an oblong and this is what Fireline looks like.

All my lure fishing is done with braid and I use a Palomar knot to attach a lure clip (my ultra light set up when I don't expect pike) or wire trace (all my other freshwater lure outfits always have a wire trace of some sort attached).

For sea bass I again use braid but attach a 2 foot section of 20lb mono to act as a rubbing leader, I use a Uni to Uni knot to do this.

Forgot to say but I only use fixed spool reels.

As far as braid's visibility... how come the fish don't notice those big ol'hooks?

:D

To each his own, I've been using braid exclusively for 2 or 3 years now and couldn't be happier.

20# braid is 8lb spiderwire supermono diameter, but it was actually 6 diameter. 0.009 is 6lb diameter, and that's what the fireline said, if i read it correctly! I don't remember now i don't have the box, but i know all about reading the reel and sizing lines and such. I mean, i'm new to braids but i know that you have to make sure it's the same diameter. That's why i bought 50# for my baitcaster which should normally use 12lb mono. I spooled up both today and have to say i have a ton more line on both this time than before. I'll take some pics later.

i use an alberto to join lines together. you ought to try it.

perhaps it was just the fireline that didnt like your reel lol... most folks are going to braid for their spin reels. much less line twist, no coiling and etc etc.. i may try it one day i dunno. i dont have any issue with the yo zuri hybrid i use. love the stuff.

he had mentioned that his knots came undone. a wetted palomar and improved clinch will not come apart. i use polamar for braid and mono.. use improved clinch for small diameter line, flouro and braid.

here's some quick crappy pics.

i just think the fireline wasnt the right line for you is all.. once you find something that you really like. stick with it. dont change unless the line itself changes. it will save you money and heart break in the long run

Yeah. I really liked the spiderwire supermono. The reason i put the spiderwire on was because my grandfather bought it for me for use on my saltwater rod but the diameter was too thin, it was the same diameter as what was required for my spinning setup. It layed fine on my baitcaster. I think ill just stick with mono on my spinning reel and braid on my baitcaster.

I'll have to look it up on youtube and practice tying it!

Back to Fireline....

A few years ago I bought a 300yd spool of 20lb Fireline and filled a 5000 sized Shimano reel with it. The reel is stated to take 240yds of .30 diameter line, depending on the manufacturer that's about 10lb mono.

So I filled the reel, expecting my reel to eat it and have perhaps only a bit of Fireline left...wrong....there was probably a 100yds left of the fireline spool!

Anyway, here's a rubbish picture of a small pike taken on a jig from Leeds-Liverpool Canal. The line was 20lb Fireline....
