Sorry fellas. I don't have the time or energy to try and prove my points. I used to expend energy trying but I've learned better over the years. I have the Praetorian and I consider it an excellent knife for hiking and camping as an all purpose camp knife/chopper. Again, I don't like to carry fixed blades around with me when I'm just on short hikes or wandering around the campground. Your opinion, of course, may vary based on your mind-set. I'll just leave it at that. (And for the record I never said the XM is in the same class as the opinel. I currently own 2 XMs and no opinels and I suppose to some of you that proves that I am crazy.)
"If you're buying a knife for intangible reasons, you're getting ripped off. Limited production knives or "mid techs" are not pieces of art. They are knives." This quote makes me laugh because you are basically saying that anyone who pays more for a knife because of the way it looks is being ripped off .... Aesthetics is an intangible reason and it's why there are thousands of knives, cars, bikes, whatever. I would say that very few people who take the time to post on Bladeforums choose the knives they buy just because they need a knife in a particular steel. I'd bet that 90% of the people who read this post buy knives and spend extra because of the way the knife LOOKS.
Me2 - your definition of "chop pretty quick" and my definition are indeed different. Is it possible that our definition could be the same? 3 whacks vs. 5 whacks vs. 10 whacks vs. 50 whacks? What's the accepted definition of "chop pretty quick"? My point from the beginning is that the Praetorian will chop through wood faster than an XM will. I bet my junglas will go even faster if it's handy... but the OP wasn't asking for a comparison to a fixed blade, machete, hatchet, etc. He was asking about the Prateorian vs the XM.
