I'm really sorry to hear about all of this, Ken. :( I wish your dad the best of luck and a full and as painless as possible recovery, but it sounds like you're doing a good job of making sure both he and the doctors keep his best interests in mind. I think the best thing you can do is keep on advocating for him like you're doing now.

Ken,I read the thread,I'm glad to hear your father is doing better.Prayers and best wishes for his full recovery,God Bless Him,

Ken,
I'm glad to hear that your dad is doing better. Hopefully we'll get some good MRI results. I'm predicting a full on Festivus miracle. :D

My dad doesn't have a broken neck but he does have some tendon and soft tissue damage. I also came very close to giving one of the doctors a backhand in the mouth. Seeing as the MRI was negative he can be put into a soft collar. I knew this last night because my doctor buddy read the results to me over the phone while he was writing them into the chart. He called me at my house and stated that he has given orders for the soft collar to be placed on my dad immediately. Well.......Mr. Resident Dumb-Ass didn't read the chart or follow the orders of the orthodepic and kept my dad in a the hard collar for 12 hours!!! When I asked him why he stated that the MRI wasn't read yet. I told him he was full of crap because it was read to me personally and I pointed it out to him in the chart. He then got snippy saying that he was the doctor and he will not have me dictating what care is given to my father. I about lost it. I asked him to step outside the room and gave him fair warning that the orders written on the chart where ordered by a my dad's orthopedic (head of ortho, actually) and if he would like to continue to disregard those orders I can easily give Dr. Grob a call and we can straighten it out through him. A look of fear came over his face at that point and within 10 minutes my dad had a soft collar.

Frickin' doctors think they know everything.

Even better news considering. It takes a while, but that type of damage will heal.

Keep him semi tied down if you can Ken. Good therapy and keeping him from doing a few things he should not do for a while will quicken that type of healing. I know from experience that if you push it too much (back or neck soft tissue and tendon problems) set-backs in healing often happen.

Good news under the circumstances Ken. Take care of him, your Mom and yourself (don't forget that last one OK)? :)

Good news ... very much in the Christmas spirit.

I'm sorry you had that experience with the doctor, Mr. C. It's not really a 'doctor' thing -- it's a problem with anyone who bolsters their sense of self worth in that way (perceived superiority associated with their job). Sadly, there are a lot of 'little tin gods' walking around.

Kudos for making him see the error of his ways. :)

Ken,

I was so happy to read your post. I was just about to ask if there was an update.

Your dad is so very lucky to have a devoted and strong-minded son who will ensure that the orders of his doctors are carried out.

And this is very stressful for you also, Ken. We all want the best for your dad in his recovery, but we also want you to heed Roadrunner's advice to take care of yourself.

Make sure you get some respite. There must be someone you trust to watch over your dad once in a while so you can get away from the situation for a little bit.

Thank God your dad will be okay. Smoke and prayers really do work. And so does following the orders of the doctors!

Take care of yourself, Ken. Your dad is gonna be okay.

TJ

Ken,
I am sorry to hear about your family's pain this year. I wish your father and your brother a complete and speedy recovery. If there is any consolation, it sounds like though your family's Christmas this year may be dampened; your 2008 Christmas will be a memorable and joyous event to look forward to.

Merry Christmas

Ken...It's a GOOD thing that it wasn't me with that doctor...He'd be in traction, and I'd be in jail.

Good to see a son stand by his dad to make sure that he's getting the best treatment. I'm the same way, and since I've been trained as both a medic, and as an Ortho/Traction-Tech, I have some idea what your dad is going through.

Best of luck to your dad with total and quick healing.

He then got snippy saying that he was the doctor and he will not have me dictating what care is given to my father.

Good for you for not backing down. If he had had a real medical reason for what he did, his job would have been to explain it to you logically, and then to call your doctor (head of orthopedics or not) and explain his point of view to him.

"I am the doctor" does not cut it.
