Pre order lottery, seriously?

Well, I gotta went somewhere... If this belongs in whine and cheese please move it.
I thought I had already seen the worst of today's knife making with makers with years of backlog, knives only being available in lotteries and people generally charging absurd amounts of money for relatively simple knives all due to a name or fashion fad.

Until today when a rather well know knife maker announced a lottery for being able to pre order one of his knives.

It doesn't even matter whether he will follow though on that pre order within a year or a decade, to me this is just plain wrong.

Am I being overly sensitive? To me a good business relationship entails that I only pick up as many orders as I can entertain within a reasonable time, and I don't artificially make products more scarce than they are. Maybe it is my thinking which is at fault here.

I do like custom knives, but by now there are only a few makers left which produce edc/user knives worth their money.

Who cares...
Most of the knives that sell like this get put into a Pelican Case and fondled a couple times before being sold for gains multiple times before the profit margin crashes for that maker.

It's not the makers, it's the buyers that make things like this undesirable. The continual circle-jerk of buy/sell jut raises prices for these knives and makes them unreachable for the "user crowd".

To a degree sure....yet the makers are playing into this stuff.

Not sure if I can blame them though. If a fool and his money are easily parted...I can understand someone wanting to catch some of the sweet sweet fool $$$

Blues is correct. It's the buyers who get whipped into a frenzy to get the flavor of the month, and those who roll them out on eBay for twice what they paid.

There isn't a knife on this planet that I can't get along just fine without.

And for every rock star maker with a lottery, there's one that can put a great knife in my hands in a time frame and price acceptable to me.

But there's always going to be those folks who will keep guys like Liu Kang busy. I'm simply not willing to play the lottery/investment/wall-art game.

How true!
The joy, to me, of getting a knife I've been looking for is carrying it AND cutting stuff! I'm amazed at the amount of 5 - 10 year old knives that have never been out of the box.
Plenty of makers out there I'd love to have a knife from.......no way am I waiting 2 years for them.
I am, without a doubt, in the user crowd.
Joe

who's the maker?

I've been waiting for years for knives from makers and I see newcomers (with deep pockets) come in, throw their cash and their bs bro-fanboy crap at the maker and get their knives just like that. And they cash out quick - like a ponzi. capitalism I guess.

Like Joe said
I am a user and can't justify shelling out $$$$$ for a knife I will be afraid to scratch and will be in a safe the whole time.
If I was an oil tycoon? Maybe
To each his own.

To be fair, Anso isn't taking money for this lottery, it's simply a way to get a chance to get on his books. If he had charged people for it, that would be ridiculous. But I can't say I'm too offended by this system.

Agreed.

I mean there are 'lottos' now where a maker will sell something small for chance to win their knife.
However what people don't seem to realise is the maker is netting 4k+ for a knife that would most likely cost 2k at most from them new.

This "evil" capitalism you guys are always bemoaning is the same system that allows you to live in a 1st world country, work in your climate controlled offices, drive your cars and enjoy your lifestyle.
Nobody's making you buy these blades at inflated prices, whining 'cause it's too much is your problem, not the sellers.

From the socks you wear, the toothpaste and brush you use, the food you eat, the water you drink, is all sold for a profit. Your employer makes a profit off of you.

You show me an economy that doesn't run on profits, i'll show you a failed/failing and corrupt country

You and Blues are correct on this matter, there isn't one knife I cant live without. I prefer not to be the flavor of the month.

A-Fucking-Men Brother. Spoken like Friedman himself. You get two choices, capitalism or living in mud huts.

People get pissed because they don't have the thousands that someone else does and they can't buy some of these customs. I recently got into flashlights. I ultimately start gravitating toward high and flashlights, like one from this guy Sinner that sells for $3000. I am actually happy to see that, because it shows someone who has such an attention to detail that he can produce a product that can command that kind of price.

Capitalism or living in mud huts? Funny.

I in fact do have the "thousands that someone else does". I'm simply not going to pay $500 for a knife that sells for $200. Pretty easy.

And mind your language. This is a family friendly site.

+1 And the fanatical Fanboys of some makers and on the makers forums are a real turn off.

This is not the economy we are discussing, so this makes no sense at all. The country will not fail if people refuse to buy knives at a markup.

If you want to try and get political, take it somewhere else:thumbup:

Capitalism or living in mud huts? Very funny, when in reality the majority of us live somewhere in between. I don't bemoan capitalism but $3000 for a flashlight is taking advantage of ignorance.

Velitrius mentioned "rock star maker with a lottery," or some such, which is spot on.

At that level, with the fans, 20 different social media outlets, raving about after market profits; it is no longer about the knife. Profits, belonging to a group, excitement take over. Just like a rock concert is not only about the music.

I just find it interesting to see the variety of behaviours a society can produce.
