Press Release, from Gil Hibben

Gil Hibben, President of the Knifemakers’ Guild and Jay Hendrickson, President of the William F. Moran, Jr. Museum & Foundation, Inc. are pleased to announce the joining of these two organizations for the 41st Annual Knifemakers’ Guild Show to be held on September 17, 18 and 19, 2010, at the Seelbach Hilton Hotel, Louisville, Kentucky.

The members of the Knifemakers’ Guild will be displaying and selling their handmade art and working knives in the Medallion Ballroom of the Seelbach Hilton Hotel, while the William F. Moran Foundation members, as guests of the Knifemakers’ Guild, will be displaying and selling their hand forged knife creations in the Mezzanine Ballroom. Additionally, there will be a display of knives made by William F. “Bill” Moran, a pioneer of modern, hand forged, damascus knives.

Since Bill Moran was a Past President of the Knifemakers’ Guild, it is only fitting that the Guild and the organization named in Bill’s honor are coming together to produce a show that will grow to be the largest “custom only” knife show in the United States of America.

Please plan to attend this years’ Guild show and be a part of this history making event.

I am very pleased to see Bill and his contribution to the Guild honored in this manner.

As a member of the W. F. Moran foundation Jay called me concrning this, it sounds like a great show and venue!

Interesting. The impression that I have from what I have read in the mags was that the move to Louisville was a pretty productive one for the Guild. This adds another variable. When is the ABS expo supposed to be happening?

Guess this is one I will have to attend. Now I just have to fill in the time between Blade and Guild. Strange that this year there seems to be no shows in July. have not seen when the Montana Knifemakers Guild will be doing a show in 2010. Probably on the weekend when I can't be there.

Murray, Joe, there's three shows on the weekend Aug 20-21, one being the Montana Show and one being the ABS Expo of course in San Antonio again this year. I've supplied a link to the CKCA 2010 events schedule. I believe it's as complete as any schedule out there and includes links where available.

Steve, I believe I'm still a member, however don't think I have seen a maker member list for the W.F. Moran Foundation.
Do you know of some makers who may setting-up at the show?

Different organizations within the custom knife community working together can have a very positive affect. I'm looking forward to the CKCA partnering up with other organizations on projects.

Wow that is news and I think it will have a lot of people joining the William F. Moran, Jr. Museum & Foundation, I have heard good things about the show. I am a loyal ABS member but if I could attend the show as a ABS member who is part of the William F. Moran, Jr. Museum & Foundation. I think I would do that, it does confuse me that the ABS is not involved in this move. we are all brothers of the blade and we should all stick together.

Kevin -- could you tell me where you got the Montana Knifemakers Association show info? I just went to their own website again and the only show info I found was for 2009.
If you are correct, then I'll likely attend that show as I suspect that it would be a bit difficult to get all the way to San Antonio after attending my Aunt's 100th birthday the previous weekend (which was the weekend for the 2009 Montana show and what I suspect they might also use for 2010 due to the two other shows taking place the same weekend). Also, from the list I got previously Kevin, the Montana show was one that was not listed. Also as I recall, you have advised that the Aug 27 weekend is actually the Ohio show and not the Mid Atlantic.

I might try the Oklahoma show though instead. Only one day but I have never been to it.

Then again, I also like the Colorado show and that would be closer for us to do a visit of places in Arizona, Utah and NM before we head East for the Guild show after a likely stop to visit with Lloyd Hale.
David L -- I know you often attend the Montana show. what have you heard? Pity that so many shows get crammed into one spot and the whole month of July is now vacant of shows.

I would not mind going to AG's show either but not sure what our plans are at that time of summer.

Murray, the Montana Show dates came straight from the Montana Knifemakers Association. All dates on the CKCA schedule should now be correct. Even though some links direct to 2009 show information, our 2010 dates are still correct. It just means that show promoters have not updated the show page on their websites. I will attend the ABS Expo in San Antonio again this year. I really enjoyed it last year.

I thought it odd too that all three shows (San Antonio, Montana, Denver) are on the same weekend.

thanks for the update. I keep watching MKA site. hope to get some passes for MKA and also the Oklahoma show as I think I could hit both unless I finally decide to try for the San Antonio show.

I was hoping there may be some more information posted here such as Moran Foundation member makers who may be attending who would not normally set-up at the Guild Show. However this is a very new development.
I'm sure more information will be forthcoming as the show draws near.

Wow! An ABS board member or members starting a Moran society and then starting a show three weeks after the ABS show? D Lisch is right. It does seem very odd. I can't imagine it will help the makers in the existing ABS show. And surely the new show can't expect to draw the big names away from the ABS show so how is that going to make their show good?

I never post here but I make guns a collect knives a little. I always loved the ABS but I'm not sure what it's board is doing. How can this be good? How is the ABS board going to run two shows back to back? From rumors I've heard the board has not given the existing committee the power to truly run a great show. Has the existing committee was ever really supported by the board? How is this board going to run two shows?

I don't mean to stir it up and probably won't post more but I am confused. I loved the ABS and wish them well but what is happening there?

Does anyone know if the ABS is in approval of this action by one of its board members?
This concerns me as it seems like a conflict of interest for the good of the ABS expo show, and seems like it could make a huge division in the ABS membership.
United we stand and divided we fall.....

How is this board going to run two shows?

Jim, the ABS board isn't running two shows. This is the Guild show and the William F. Moran, Jr. Museum & Foundation, Inc being discussed here. ABS has nothing to do with it.

Jim I do not think Think ABS will need to run two shows as I think this show is the work of the William F. Moran, Jr. Museum & Foundation it is news to me that the shows are 3 weeks apart and I now see how this would be a conflict I am going to join the William F. Moran, Jr. Museum & Foundation but I will not do the show if it looks like it would hurt my standing in the ABS. so like Tim said it would be good to know if the board of the ABS is in favor of the show. Tim if you could make some calls and get back to us that would be good. thank you.

Jay Hendrickson, President of the William F. Moran, Jr. Museum & Foundation, Inc

This is also news to me.

On a side note, show promoters should try a little harder to space these shows out. When two or more shows are bunched up together it hurts them all.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, however I don't believe the ABS or the ABS board has anything to do with this endeavor as the William F. Moran JR. Museum & Foundation Inc is a totally separate entity from the ABS.

I believe/hope this will most likely have a positive affect on the custom knife community in general, as it offers more exposure to an icon and pioneer of custom knives and helps to bring forged and stockremoval knives together under one custom knife banner.

I have attended the last 5 or so ABS Expos and in my opinion it is a great show. This is probably more a question of can the knife community support an expanded Guild show with all the other shows, rather than a question of the ABS vs. the Moran Foundation.

I believe the CKCA show schedule currently contains about 65 shows/events for 2010.
