Pretty slim pickins in the movie theaters this summer

Really looking forward to War of the Worlds. The original with Gene Barry is still neat to watch, the FX were way ahead of their time. It scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. Hopefully the new one will be as scary and awesome and fun as the original.

Imagine how scared you would have been listening to it on Orson Welles' Mercury Theater Radio program on October 30, 1938.

How many people died that night?

I'm really not sure if anyone died, but the panic and mass hysteria was spread across several states. If only those people had heard the begining of the broadcast explaining that it was a dramatization, rather than an actaul event.

Here's the NY Times article from the next day:

I have a copy of that broadcast on CD. It's really neat listening to it after dark when things get creepier.

But...I didn't get to hear it in '38. :)

Well here's why I want to see Fantastic Four:

War of the World's also looks great, and Batman Begins could be good. After the last three, I'm not holding my breath. Mr. and Mrs. Smith looks like it could be a lot of fun too (how in the hell is it that Angelina Jolie just gets hotter as she ages? It's not natural.).

I've heard that, although not in 1938. It's actually quite convincing - breaking into "regular programming" with a "news flash". A Chicago AM radio station used to play it on Halloween each year.

I don't think anyone actually killed themselves, but I recall reading that one man shot his water tower with a shotgun.

I'll probably watch Fantastic4 also. I was entertained by the X-Men movies, and Spiderman and Daredevil weren't too bad.

I'd like to see a movie of The Silver Surfer.

Here are my pics of the ones I recognize:

May 27, 2005
Madagascar

June 03, 2005
Lords of Dogtown (The story of skateboarding as we know it. I saw the documentary and it was fantastic.)
June 15, 2005
Batman Begins

June 24, 2005
Bewitched (Mmmmmmmm. Nicole Kidmannnn!)
George A. Romero's Land of the Dead (Obviously)

June 29, 2005
War of the Worlds (Obviously)

July 08, 2005
Fantastic Four
Dark Water

July 15, 2005
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (I hear it's creepier this time.)

August 05, 2005
The Pink Panther (I'm a fan.)

October 14, 2005
The Fog (One of John Carpenter's first movies - was really good! Gotta see the remake.)
Tim Burton's Corpse Bride (I NEVER miss a Burton movie!)

October 28, 2005
Saw 2 (Maybe. The first one was OK.)

November 04, 2005
Legend of Zorro (Maybe)

November 18, 2005
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Sure. I liked the others.)

Now I gotta go read up on all those others and report back on the unrecognizable titles that look like they might be worth watching.
:D

Fantastic Four for me (and my son) as well. There's a new trailer over at Yahoo today! I'm planning on doing a midnighter for that movie if they have one. If not, I'll be first in line the next day. Since I have ever FF comic back to #10, you could say I've been a fan for a while.

Bob... Check out http://www.comicboards.com/surfer/

I used to be a mod there and it's a great board. There was a thread not too long ago talking about who should be cast as SS, and even if they should have a person as SS.

That's why i like spielberg. He's the ultimate director. He makes excellent movies that a lot of people enjoy. That's what movie making is all about. Yeah you can make good movies like Altman or even Kurosawa but how many people really enjoy their movies. They've got a very small fan base.

I don't think any director in the world has a resume as diverse as Spielberg.

-Jaws
-Indiana Jones 1,2,3 (4th one coming as well)
-Close Encounters of the Third Kind
-ET
-The Color Purple
-Empire of the Sun
-Jurassic Park
-Schindler's List
-Saving Private Ryan
-Minority Report
-War of the Worlds

Out of all the movies mentioned i think Schindler's List is probably the best. Had Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes and Spielberg in a movie. All favourites of mine.

I watched Dark Water ages ago. It ain't worth it. There were some scary parts but nowhere near as good as Ring. I'm quite surprised they're remaking it. It was kind of a stupid movie.

BobW:
I can't agree with you that America's best director is Altman. He's good but not great. I just have a feeling that he makes too many movies with too many stars in it. If you look at a lot of his movies it's largely dependent on hiring the tops stars in it. Just look at Short Cuts, Pret a Porter and even Gosford Park.

Interesting. I'll probably watch it anyway. Heck, I liked The Village and House of Wax. :)

Looking forward to;

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Burton + Depp = Good Movies!)
FF (Chiclas as The Thing? I'm There)
WotW (No Brainer, Spielberg and Cruise make good Blockbuster)
Batman (Year One) (From the director of Momento, say no more)
Bewitched (Kidman is yummy, Ferrel is funny)

Oooh! That's a Tim Burton movie? I didn't know THAT. I NEVER miss a Tim Burton movie! So, he's got two coming out this year, I guess. (See my earlier list.)

HAHAHA...i actually liked The Village as well. Don't think i'd like House of Wax but i will watch it just because Elisha Cuthbert is in it.

I just looked at a list off of MSNBC, it looks like there aren't any real big blockbusters this summer, other than Batman and War of the Worlds. I saw Star Wars and really enjoyed it, it'll probably pull a Return of the King and be shown in theaters till the end of the year. From the list I saw, all of the summer movies I'm interested in are released in July. Two look like they'll stay in theaters for a while, one looks like it might be on DVD by August ;) .

June 17th Batman Begins

June 24th Land of the Dead

June 29th War of the Worlds

I'll scope out IMDB for some more goodies...

Serenity is the feature movie based on the short-lived show Firefly.

What the heck, nobody's mentioned the Dukes of Hazzard movie?

I was looking forward to this one until I saw the peculiar casting:

Seann William Scott .... Bo Duke
Johnny Knoxville .... Luke Duke
Jessica Simpson .... Daisy Duke
Burt Reynolds .... Boss Hogg
Willie Nelson .... Uncle Jesse
David Koechner .... Cooter Davenport

Seann Scott is the dude from the American Pie movies. Every time I see him on screen, I'm gonna think...Stiffler!

Jessica Simpson just doesn't do it for me as Daisy Duke. I haven't seen her in any movies, but she's no Catherine Bach.

Burt Reynolds as Boss Hogg? No way. Boss Hogg was the character that made the original show, IMHO, and I just can't see Reynolds in that role. Unless maybe he doesn't wear his toupee for the first time ever.

I wonder if they will be driving an orange Dodge Charger named the General Lee, with a Confederate flag painted on it. I suspect not. Probably have them in a Volvo station wagon.

Ah well, I'll likely see it anyway.

:p :D

Me either. I vote for Catherine Zeta-Jones as Daisy Duke. :D

I wondered that myself. It took me a while to find this photo.

Who would make a good Boss Hog? Louie Anderson? :D John Goodman?

I dunno man, those are some pretty big comedic shoes to fill. Sadly, the original Boss Hogg, Sorrell Booke, passed away in 1994.

I was thinking the guy who played Newman on Seinfeld, but he's too tall and not bald.

Maybe Danny De Vito could pull it off. He's almost too recognizable though, he always gets those type of roles.

There's also Roscoe P. Coltrane, I'll have to see who's playing him.

Anyone heard anything about "The Island?

I read a 1-sentence blurb in the paper and instantly I thought "wow, that sounds like 'Parts: The Clonus Horror!'"

For those of you that aren't familiar, "Parts" was a movie featured on "Mystery Science Theater 3000", a show where a guy and 2 robots watch and make fun of horrible movies. "Parts" was a particularily horrible movie starring Peter Graves and Dick Sargent (one of the Darren Stevens on "Bewitched"), about a utopian society that's actually by clones of rich and powerful people that is used as a farm to raise spare parts in case one needs a transplant or something.

"Parts" was a truely awful movie (but a hilarious MST3K episode), but I always thought the premise was a decent idea, especially now (the original is 25 years old) with human cloning becomming more and more possible, and more contraversial.

Well, they re-made that piece of garbage, put a star-studded cast in it, and stuck them all on an island.

The only problem is that Michael Bay directed it. Michael Bay is best known for his epilectic cinematography, hammy acting, corny dialogue, and blowing shit up. I never thought that a remake of an MST3K episode could be worse than the original, but Michael Bay might just pull that off. OTOH, Jerry Bruckheimer (best known for hammy acting, corny dialogue, and blowing even more shit up) isn't producing this one, the first time Michael Bay worked without Jerry, so who knows, maybe it won't be as bad as I think it might.
