Im new to knife collecting and this forum. I thought I could find some good deals on used knives here.

A brand new Chris Reeve small Sebenza goes for 330 from CRK.com. Most people post them here for 300 to 330. A large one goes for 385. People are asking 360 to 385 for them. A BM Barrage goes for 89 on Amazon. People have them listed here for 83.

Im new here and I must be missing somthing. Why would you guys pay 100% of retail for a used knife? Am I wrong? I probably am, what do you think of the price of used knives on the forums? Any good deals out there?

thanks

The prices are what people will pay. You're not going too see much of a price drop on quality tools in general because they really don't loose much as they are used. I don't necessarily agree with how things work but it is how it is. ;)

I suggest taking a basic microeconomics course to learn about supply and demand.

Lots of times the new knives are not immediately available

People here list their knives at whatever price they please. If they list them for more than I can find a knife that I want at a dealer, then they will not get noticed by me. Sometimes people need the money here and you get a great deal. Other times people try to get back what they have in a blade. (or with hard to get blades make money) A lot start high and drop as they remain unsold. Not much set in stone here I think as far as prices go.

I'll take a slightly used knife for a few bucks off of retail while not having to pay for tax or shipping. You also will, sometimes, catch price drops on knives when they don't sell right away. If you keep a discerning eye out, you can find some excellent deals that are far under retail.

Thats what I thought, I called CRK YESTERDAY. A large left hand Sebenza is available directly form them, in two weeks for 385 plus tax and shipping.

Im just too cheap to pull the trigger yet. Still hoping to pick one up for 50 bucks

Finding a large left hand Sebenza for $50 sounds like a worthy grail quest. Good luck.

That's never gonna happen, no sane person will sell any Sebbie for $50. I'm hoping you meant 50 bucks off of retail ;).

(50 bucks) it was supposed to be a humorous retort

And so was mine :). Still, if you keep your eyes peeled and scour the exchange at least once a day you're bound to find a good deal on a Seb you want. That's what I did and I've bought more than a couple of Sebbies at great prices! I have yet to buy a brand new CRK...to me, users have all the function of new blades.

many, if not most, people list knives to include shipping charges.

from crk, a sebenza is 385 plus tax (maybe) and shipping, putting you over 400.

if you buy one here for 360 shipped, you saved 10%.

dont expect a huge discount just because you are buying a knife that has had another owner.

Like Jill said people are perfectly free to list their knives for whatever price they feel like.

There are a ton of factors that determine how much a knife goes for on the secondary market. Its condition, age, availability and desirability all come into play. Many of the knives you see selling for a few bucks less then what you might pay for a new one are either NIB or have barely been used (in other words “near as makes no difference” new condition) and your getting the same knife for a few bucks less.

True users tend to sell for considerably less, the exception being CRK (as mentioned above) they hold their value very well.

As someone who sells knives here I often don’t know quite what to price a knife at I don’t want to ask to much cause then it wont sell and I don’t want to ask to little cause then the deal isn’t fair to me. Most of the time I will price the knife a little above what I think it will sell at and then lower the price every few days until it sells. The exception to that would be when I need quick cash, then I’ll price it low and the knife goes fast.

There are deals out there. I got my first Sebenza as a gift: I won a contest here on Bladeforums. I saw a small Sebenza go unsold even after the owner dropped the price to $200. I bought it, and later sold it to a friend for the same price.

You have been on the forums since Sept. which maybe gives you 2 weeks. It is not really enough time to make an evaluation. BF is generally a pretty tight community, with many members personally knowing each other well. If not personally, then cyberly, which in my world is just fine. There are real people on the other end of the PM's or posts.

Sometimes, I agree with you, not such great deals, and then other times, a lucky door opens, and a great deal shows up. I saw a Para Military in D2 go for 100, where a like one would sell for 140 to 180 when the feeding frenzy was happening. So, the deals are there. Do not hold your breath on a great deal on a Sebenza, I have been watching for a couple of years now. Just save up some money and buy one.

There's a difference between the "Listed" price and what it actually sells for. Lots of knives listed don't sell.

Also what it actually sells for is only really known to 2 people regardless of what it's listed for.

There's some really good deals to be had if you put in the time and work on a knowledge base.
