Priority Mail problem

Never had a problem with the USPS before. However, Priority Mail, placed with the Post Office in West Newbery, MA 1-4-06 has yet (as of 1-13-06) to show up in Oregon at my post office box (10 days overdue).

I paid, by CC (Am Ex), for two Leatherman Charge ti multi-tools ($150 with shipping).

The post office says that Priority Mail averages 2-3 day delivery time.

What I've done so far: talked with vendor, talked with my post office, talked with Leatherman Tools (vendor is a new seller of LM) and searched tracking number online.

What is the ethical course to follow? What can I do? When should I give up?

Bottom line as I see it: Vendor did his part, sent 2 LMs to me, and I am out $150 unless mail is just slow.

Thank you kindly for any suggestions.

All the best,

you have a tracking number right, hopefully an insurance number too.

Wait 30 days, it it hasn't shown up file a claim.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes I have a tracking number. It will let me know when the item is delivered.

I do not have an insurance number. Is insurance a part of Priority Mail? Or, is it purchased separately? There was no option to purchase insurance at the vendor's site when I purchased the items.

It's a separate item.

If you have the green label, it's delivery confirmation and it's scanned only twice , once on pickup and once on delivery.

The blue label is the insurance, also scanned like above.

Most liekly it's just delayed, I've had poor luck the usps since the holidays.

It's probably just delayed. We sent a Priority Mail package to a customer in Wisconsin and it took 18 days for delivery. USPS only scans when the package is picked up and when it delivers so it's not as easy to track as UPS but I still use Priority Mail a majority of the time and I always get delivery confirmation.

Thank you Dave & NS for the information and encouragement.

I had a package take 9 days last year, ever so often USPS drops the ball on the whole "priority" concept.

I had a certified letter with return receipt take three months a couple of years ago. Sort of forgot about it, then one day the receipt turned up.

good luck,
Rich

Thankfully, nobody has posted a Priority Mail drop dead horror story (three months comes close! ). I mine some confidence from that fact.

Like my refrigerator, I take the mail for granted because it always works. But, like the fridge, things can go sideways.

However, I've never had a Post Office originated disappointment. On the contrary, I admire their top-drawer service and reliability.

Well, unless the vendor has a disclaimer when using USPS for delivery,if it don't show up he is responsible to rectify the situation in a timely manner. It is he that has to deal with an insurance claim not you.If it doesn't show next week I would write him asking for a refund or another shipment.

I use USPS priority shipping all the time..it usually takes three days from the midwest to the west coast. I would guess that it is delayed..East to West coast I would think five days tops but in my experience the USPS seems to slow way down after the holiday season.

Keep us posted..

You mentioned you paid by Am Ex CC, you should be covered by 'Buyer's Assurance' in case of loss if you don't receive your items. Call them to find out.

I had a Priority package I mailed last year take 15 days to go from Georgia to South Carolina. Luckily I had a patient buyer. I had contacted the PO about the package after a week and they were going to 'investigate' but the package was finally delivered before they contacted me again.

Unfortunately, Am Ex has no such buyer protection. I believe that VISA does have buyer protection, however.

Talked with Am Ex and they will, if I was to ask them, discuss with the vendor with the intent to satisfy me. This is something I can do for myself and I have already talked with the vendor. A credit card company may have more bargaining power than me but I am concerned with doing the right thing. Don't want to muscle anyone.

Thanks for the tip.

Take a look for yourselves:

Tracking number: 9101801151861002171276

Tracking site: http://www.usps.com/shipping/trackandconfirm.htm

--Click the link, cut and past the tracking number, click go, click "additional details."--

My post office said that the package did ship. I believe them. But, I look at this site and read the disclaimer that says "* This is not confirmation that the Postal Service has received your item from the shipper." I am confused.

The vendor says it shipped. I believe him. However, I look up my account on his site and the status of this order shows it did not ship. Software glitch or bookkeeping issue probably.

Pending Not Yet Shipped $149.90)

You would think that the post office would know if it shipped or not. Perhaps the USPS tracking software, like alot of SW, simply comes up short.

Tempest in a teapot probably. Leathermans are probably just on a side trip before they show themselves here.

oregon,

Don't fear...Your package will arrive...It's just that it's taking the scenic route from West Newbery, MA to Oregon, via a slow-boat to China..:D.

China! Ohhhhh sssshhhhhiiiiittttteee. Not China. Not via China. Anywhere but China.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no no no no no no, etc.. (dialogue from Sexy Beast).

You are spoiling my mental vision of the two traveling Leatherman getting their lanyards pulled in Amsterdam, their nobs polished in Solingen, their leather tanned on a topless beach in sunny Greece & their heat treated in Bavaria. All the travel just a pleasant prelude to riding on my hip.

Twisting the nuts on a Beijing bicycle doesn't work any consolative magic for me.

Where oh where in the world are the Leatherman? Call home.

Sent a H&K scope mount and some other odds and ends to a friend in Connecticut via Priority Mail from Arkansas. It took 11 days to make the trip. No explanation from his friendly mail carrier as to what the deal was. Had I realized it was going to be that bad, I would have paid another $5 for Express mail, in which case it might have made there in less than a week.

Theres bascially no such thing as "delayed" with the USPS. Packages are not just piled up in a warehouse somewhere. If its been this long its lost,,but hopefully not permanently. Its either gone someplace else becasue of being mis-labeled or mis-routed or its been stolen.
I shipped a Custom Mayo TNT 2 years ago from Alabama to Georgia via PM,,it never arrived. I no longer us USPS for anything valuable. I only use trackable shipping from Fed EX at this point with no problems thus far.

:)

Sometimes I've gotten a package before it is even marked as it left the original post office on their website. Other times, each movement of the package is meticulously tracked.

Vendor asked what I would like when it was obvious to both of us that the package was not going to be delivered to me. I told him a refund and I got a refund. The same amount that had been charged on the card upon shipment was credited back to the card.

I thanked the vendor for his professional and kind treatment. Told him that I would contact him ASAP if the shipment ever was delivered.

A happy ending.

Thank you everyone for your comments and encouragement.

All the best,

oregon
