We have seen debate here before about seller/buyer shipping/receiving .......but I am just curious if anyone has come up with a fresh idea for same day shipment at both ends of a transaction.

I think both parties (buyer and seller) assume equal risk when one ships the other their respective committment. If you provide a MO Brand, #, and Tracking #, shouldn't you be sent your merchandise the same way on the same day?

Would just like to see if anyone has a new, novel idea about it besides PayPal and GBU reports.

I like simultaneous shipping. You're right, both the seller and the buyer are assuming equal risk. Trading over the internet is really a trust thing. I've found that by being very explicit about what I mean, and by requiring the other party to be equally clear about what he/she means has avoided most of the comon problems I've seen.

Affirm and Agreed!

Have had only one problem from a member of this board, but everyone fried him so he came clean and shipped me my blade back. Claimed he got an empty box, then miraculously found it! Some readers of this will recall it.

Did have a problem with a user from another board today who seemed to think he would be risking more than I if he sent the item at the same time......BS. He said I could send a fake MO, or an empty UPS Envelope when I gave him the brand of MO, Exact Issued Amount, Payee, MO#, Issuing Bank and Location, and UPS Tracking #.I couldn't seem to reason how his end could be any different?

We came to terms but it prompted the thought of how else could it be done? A thief is a thief and the risk, and remedy is equal at both ends of the deal.....right? Anyone disagree? Not trolling, just curious.

Anyone with serious paranoia issues probably should not be dealt with. I let my reputation stand on its own two feet. There was a time for all of us when we were new - I didn't feel bad that established members were more cautious when dealing with me early on - I had no track record.

If a trade is a fair/even trade, no party stands to loose more than the other. If someone truly feels this way they probably wouldn't be willing to transact anyway. Some people think trading is a game - they're trying to "beat you". I hate playing headgames when dealing with people. I just tell everything up front (including when I feel they might find a better deal if they wait) and I think people respect that. I'm not in it to get the better of anyone, just here to enjoy this hobby and make friends in the process. I enjoy dealing with people who share my perspective.

If I thought so little of someone to say that to them...I wouldn't be dealing with them to begin with, and certainly wouldn't deal with someone who would say that to me. "I will ship same day payment is received" would have been acceptable, IMO. That was not. We don't have to put blind trust in everybody out there, but we don't have to be rude, either.

I like the idea of simultaneous shipping, and usually do that if I'm the seller, but don't feel obligated to. Honestly, sometimes a person's emails, and the "feel" you get from them just don't give alot of confidence-emails are so impersonal, though. It's not about someone being "good" or not. Guess I go with the gut, so to speak.

Haven't had any deals go bad, but have had one (maybe one more..can't remember) where for some reason or another, I decided to wait for payment before shipping, and was glad for it.
I get an email from the buyer telling me the money will be on the way "tomorrow". Six days later, I get an email from the buyer saying the money will be on the way "tomorrow"
Transaction was finally finished, but it was a hassle that put a damper on my enthusiasm for entering into trades with people I don't know, and made me question my usual habit of shipping immediately.
Shame that one person's unreliability can affect your whole attitude about trading. Like a bad relationship that puts you on your guard from then on...

So, while preferring that we ship simultaneously, I don't have a problem with a seller waiting to receive payment before sending me the knife/whatever, and have always felt that it was at the seller's discretion.

Don't know if it's pertinent or not, but I have never asked a seller to ship before receiving payment, and don't recall a buyer ever asking me to ship before receiving payment.
Tough call.

...I try to get the other party on the phone, or talk extensively via email before I ship anything.

Once I'm comfortable, then I have zero problem with simutaneous shipments.

With a few exceptions; I did a 'deal' with a fellow the other day that seemed rather unsure of himself...so I'm holding off on shipment until his M/O gets here...

Bottom line, it's really a judgement call.

That being said....'If it walks like a duck...'

This is an interesting question, especially from my perspective. As a relative newcomer to the blade forums I have done a number of transactions that I would like to think have gone very smoothly. Other than the vagaries of the USPS and their concept of "Priority Mail" and "Tracking" all of the knives I bought or traded for went smoothly. My question as a newcomer, is how does the normal guy work this "deal" out. I have had a number of members ship me their "goods" the day I notified them of the Money Order # and how it was shipped. On my end, my confidence is predicated on research in the GBU, and how the individual that presented himself during the transaction. Professionalism and courtesy go a long way to inspiring confidence. My feeling is a scam man that is good enough to shaft me, can probably make more money doing it elsewhere ;) The number of transactions in a short period of time have helped establish my "credentials and references" in a relatively short period of time, but what does the one off buyer/seller do?

OwenM the reason the guy e-mailed that to me was because I had asked him if he would go ahead and ship with all the verification of funds shipment I gave him. I did not explain it enough in detail because your "right", had he stated that to me I wouldn't have wanted to deal with him. The way he explained why he wouldn't was in the third person.

I ask people to ship when I ship because I am willing to take the time and provide details of what I have done to get them their funds. Thus I feel as a courtesy, they should reciprocate. If there is an inspection period, I want to get through it as quickly as possible so if I don't approve I don't miss out on another, or something different, because the funds were tied up too long. If he waits until he gets my funds a week or more can be lost before the inspection part can even be achieved.

I agree with those here who describe the "feeling" and the GBU forum makes a HUGE difference. The "one off buyer/seller is a very good point.

Unfortunately, the forum I was dealing with finding this item does not have a seller feedback forum and I am a relative newby there.

I think all buyers and sellers are different. Things should be spelled out SPECIFICALLY before the transaction. I have had deals where I have shipped out $$$/knives at the same time as the person I made the deal with. Other times, I sent a money order to the person with the knife I wanted. I recently sent an expensive knife to a buyer who wanted to inspect the knife first. Just make sure everything is spelled out in the first place.

I wish all trade/sales could be made on trust alone, and have made quite a few deals on such... I am perhaps too trusting, and would like people to trust me, as I am trustworty (I pride myself on my integrity) I prefer to do knife/knife trades shipped simultaneously. If I am going to buy a knife, I'll ship you a money order first, and in the future, I will expect the same. If the buyer has no trust in the seller... why should the seller have trust in the buyer?

I don't know. Maybe cause I'm old school, when I buy, I prefer to send the $$ first, then get the product.

Then I started hanging around here. Some dude in Indiana ;) sends me a knife, tells me if I like it send money, if not, send it back. Blew me away. He hardly knew me from Adam, just from my posts here, and a mutual friend. Got the same treatment from a Sly Cat in the Netherlands too.

It is great to see the "I trust you until you give me a reason not to" philosophy in action.

Seem to be a whole different crew that hangs here. Of course, there are those that feed the "UGLY" side of the forum too. Really too bad.

Some people on here, I'd trust with no reservations. Like Melvin said, others may take some time, or may not get there at all. Just like any other relationship, some click, some don't.

The only times I have done simultaneous ships are, if I have done business with that person before, or if the items are not too rare or expensive. I have been buying, selling and trading here for a few years now, and have only been burned once. 99% of my fellow knife freaks are stand up guys, but there's still that small sector that rears it's ugly head on GB&U that makes me leary.

Man I love this thread. Aside from the newbies, if you have been around here for awhile and have a good track record, simultaneous ships are common. I'm not going to repeat that which has been stated previously in this thread except to sum up.By and large, the people around here are the most decent folk to be found. Knife people in general tend to be good, but the members I have had the privilege of trading with around here have been tops.

I'll never forget the clown that got his panties crooked because I sent him a bank money order instead of a postal money order as he had directed. Forget the fact that I had been here a good while and had nothing but + signs in the GB&U, this guy goes out of kilter over this deviation from his edicts. I've been all over the different parts of the world "entrusted" with serious sh## and now am in a profession where millions are entrusted to my care; and I get an e-lecture on what type of f**k*** money order I send on an $80 deal! :barf:

I said all of that to say this: Of course there's risk, but with some exceptions, there's a comparatively small amount at risk and potential for great rewards in new relationships. This is a hobby for crying out loud and most (seriously, I mean like 99%) of the folk around here are A-OK. It's nice here and the poeple are generally good. Let's not lose sight of that.

AMEN MELVIN!!!!!!!!
Some of the clowns on this forum think that $50.00 will bankrupt them.
Won't take checks. My ass.Every Custom knifemaker except one I have bought from will take my check.Pardue,Morris,Chew,Onion,Chamblin,Rogers,Elishewitz,Stout ,Turnbull, ect, ect, ect. The one that won't ,I don't do business with.TRUST MAN,TRUST.Some of these guys send me knives, and if I like the piece pay them.
Just sold a knife to a guy I don't know from Adam.Gave me$300.00 and owes me $300.00.Let him have the knife.Have his address and phone#.Vouched for by a purveyor. No prob.
I also ship most of the time at the sign of a done deal.Provided has been around awhile.
Rant off.

I worry about my end of a transaction and hope that the person at the other end is an honorable person. I have never been disappointed. I can only uphold my end of a transaction and will always do so. If at some point I get screwed I will let everyone here know and then I will go on doing things in a straight up manner. At least this way everyone will know that my side of the deal will be followed through on.

It is impossible to know for sure that the person that has agreed to handle a transaction with you in a certain way, will follow through. If you want to buy or trade knives on the forums, you will just have to trust in others and take your chances.

I`ve only had one shaky transaction-with a prominent member of these Forums. We agreed to ship at the same time, a trade really. M y knife for his plus cash. He got mine, posted it for sale on Forums, sold it, then I got his two days later. Won`t post name here because he`s very well known.

John

No problem if both parties have positive history however when it's all one way then I feel the guy with the reputation {good} should be able to make the call. Just my .02 I live in Canada and have all my knives shipped in without insurance but when I ship to others in the USA or other countries I always insure them. Just a bookeeping problem at my end if you know what I mean. :D

This really affects us O/S guys more than your interstate deals.

I always send a parcel EMS with tracking No. Hell, I even send money orders EMS. I want the damn thing as quick as possible!

If I sell, I ship the knife before getting the money, I know that most of us here are regulars so I have no problems in trusting you guys. How many of the same names do you see here everyday?! We are like a big family and those who cheat the system or piss somebody off gets caught out everytime anyway - dont deal with those people (easy rule).

I am all for trusting people. I have always found it rude to ask the seller to ship same day though and have no problem with THEIR decision to wait for monies as they usually do so because they have been burnt before. I think that the 'when I get the money I will ship the product' attitude is set in deep to most of us.

LETS CHANGE IT I TELLS YA! We can only embed deeper trust and friendships if we all do the right thing by one another.

My 2 cents...

be safe dudes and have a good weekend.

Have to agree with Gundy. I had some experience with doing overseas deals with Miguet, and Gundy came along and rounded out the experience. Face it, if someone is going to get you they are going to get you and it will surface on the boards. Doesn't matter how many "toys" you already have, the anticipation of waiting for that addition can be a killer :D

I knew STOMPER was not talking about me:p :p

It is always the same statement that applies every time a thread like this appears. That is:

You are only as good as your word. If you are a Person of honor, and do not see a scumbag when you look in the mirror, you are NEVER going to be on the ugly side of GB&U.

I deal with members of BF in only one way. I trust you all explicitly and expect the same. If we cannot agree to trust each other, we ain't got a deal............Ira
