Probable defect?

I got my first ESEE-4 Serrated Clip Point last week and used it today, after chopping at a tree for a good 6 minutes, I go back and wash then oil it, and I notice this huge chip. (I don't know if it would be considered huge, but this is the first time I've gotten one that big.) I checked if there were any nails or metal objects stuck in the tree but none. I'm dumbstruck.

Also something that's been bugging me is a black stain all over the edge areas, that repeatedly appears and disappears. It shows up when it's clean, and also when it's oiled, so I don't know what's causing it. It came like that new, so I don't know if that's normal. I know it seems trivial, but small things like this bug me. Haha. Anyone know what's causing the black stains? And is there any way to fix the huge chip? The chip looks smaller on one side than the other.

WARNING : Pictures are heavy.

EDIT : Pictures could not be spoilered and they stretch the page so wide, so here's the links.

the chip should sharpen out with some work on a coarse stone.
the discoloration looks like oxidation, when you wash the knife, do you dry it off with a towel or let it air dry?
I would wipe it down with a towel to dry it off, then apply oil/tuf-cloth right away.
Another thing that will help with the oxidation is polishing the edge -- sharpen to a 600 or 1200 grit finish.
good luck!

Screw that! That chip is way too big to sharpen out. We need to replace this knife. Period.

Not sure what happened but the man has a severely chipped knife and it just needs to be replaced. T.O.M. if you will go to our warranty page on the web site and fill out the form we would appreciate it since we track warranty replacements.

I'm sure you would, but this is an opportunity for the owner to really make this knife his own. I put a chip of similar size in my Izula, and I took the opportunity to put a nice convex on the edge. Presto! No more chip, and a knife that's absolutely what I want, heel to tip, edge to spine.

OP - the long and short of it is this : ESEE will replace it, but you can absolutely take care of it yourself. Get it on a coarse stone, set the bevel you want and go to work, getting more and more fine, until you can see your reflection on that edge if you choose.

Wow you guys are awesome as usual, I think I'm going to be a hardcore fan like everyone else. I'm sorry for the hassle of sending it in to you, I don't really have any sharpening tools / stones.

No problem, sir. Please go here and this should have all the info you need:http://www.eseeknives.com/warranty.htm

Just remember that we will be at SHOT, leaving out next week. You may want to just use the blade a little more as is and then send it in after we get back around the 24th. That way you are not without your knife for a long stretch.

that's definitely a good sized chip, certainly can be worked out on stone, but would need to take a decent amount of metal off.

the staining on the edge is normal, just some patina looks like. If you have a leather strop with compound it will take it off, but doesn't hurt to leave the stains on either.

i have a similar chip on my 4( hit a rock when batonning through wood). sharpening will help, but your still going to have the chip. send it back if it bugs you. im keeping mine just cause a) the chip hasnt really bothered when when im using the knife, and b) i screwed it up by doing sumthin stupid ( should of though about the rocks in my area)

Wow! Just wow.
Customer service like this is fantastic. I have done business with a couple of companies in my life that are similar. I am their customer for life and will be yours as well. I hope to never have a problem with your products and seeing how you back them I certainly don't expect to.

Jeff,

I recently had a similar issue with my Junglas, but didn't think you guys would cover it. I'll post pictures later today, but would it be easier if I just brought it to SHOT and pick up a replacement there? I figure it will save on shipping costs.

Post up pics.

We won't have replacements at SHOT since every blade we carry is spoken for or being given away in drawings.

Just a note, the damage occurred over a period of about 4 to 6 hours of just straight up chopping, big ass calluses included. My blade is well loved, and if it isn't so severe that replacement isn't viable, I'm cool with that. Just sucks when I'm testing for sharpness and I know its not a clean edge.

I tried sharpening it away which helped with the extra "burr" on the sides, but the metal is still missing. I'm thinking it was caused by a pebble or something?

Send it back and we shall replace it. Go to the warranty page posted above and we will take care of it from there.

I would figure the chips would be more towards the chopping area of the blade if caused from chopping. Not bitching if it did but this looks more like ground contact since it's so close to the end of the blade

I agree on the junglas ,looks that the chopping area is fine but the tip of the blade was contacting the ground ,hitting rocks & what not

I was half way thru this post before I figured out that everyone was being serious. I don't see a defective blade, just a roughly used blade. These things aren't meant to be indestructable. I am sorry if this offends anyone, it just seems like some are being a little unscrupulous. I think it is nice to see a knife that has actually been used, and not pristine-only out of its box to pose for a picture before returning to the rest of the "collection". It also says a lot...to have a knife, and no way to sharpen it? I guess if ESEE isn't complaining, I should shut up. I would feel kind of dumb sending my knife back because I used it hard, and it looked....used.
