Problem With My 0551...

Yup - push the stud more toward the front of the knife. Mine flies open with just a nudge.

Another trick is to have the knife upside down when you flick it. Gravity is your friend that way ;)

Took me a while to figure out I needed to push the thumbstud "UP" rather than "OUT". Once I started doing that, it opens smoothly and easily.

This. Also a lot of people unknowingly put pressure on the lockbar when trying to open the knife one handed. Pay attention and make sure one of your fingers isn't gripping the lockbar.

I've been using thumb and index finger (on opposite side) to start the blade swinging, and then thumb alone to finish opening. I've tried different angles (toward and away from the pivot) and it just doesn't matter.

There you go. That's why the index finger technique works, it takes the finger pressure off the lockbar and puts it on the blade.

Also, on one of my 551's the lock bar is sticking quite a bit and hard to disenagage.

Thank you for the info!

One of my 0551s was sticking very badly too. Nothing was helping it, not even sharpie.

What I did was tighten the knife down. (you need a T10) after tightening the knife down I could visually tell that the lock bar was hitting the tang differently. After tightening and working it while having sharpie on the tang the knife works flawlessly. I didn't think it could be fixed without sending it in because mine was sticking so badly I'd have to pry the lock bar out of the locked position. Hope this helps.

This literally my exact same problem! I actually have to pry the bar open on occasion. Luckily I have another I can use but I want them both flawless. I've consider sending it in and actual have it packed up. I'm defintely going to try your method. Thanks so much for
The help!

I hope you get it sorted out.

Also, when it does stick really bad I found that grabbing the blade and wiggling it up and down (as if checking for vertical play) makes it easier to unlock. I have no clue why but it works for me.

I really appreciate it.

And and that vertical play check worked a bit for me. It almost feels like it's grinding when I open and close it. I just want to get it squared away quick because one, this is a truly amazing knife but it's also a highly sought after sprint run so I want to keep the non customized one pristine. And thanks again.

No problem! I bought two of these also just for that reason. I really want to customize my user but I don't know if I should spend the money on scales or another knife. Haha.

I def want to see pics of your knife with the CF scales. I can only imagine how sick it looks. I wish I could get some CF like that on my para2 put on my 0551.

Your preaching to the choir man. Lol I have the cf para 2 and it's by far my favorite carbon fiber. Perfect amount of grip. I have crabin finer grooved on the 0551 scales like a topographic map would be? Here is the link to the thread

And id go with the scales man, I love taking a production model and making it my own. It becomes really yours at that point.

I do believe Rick Hinderer said that he's eventually going to start to make scales for the ZT 0551 and 0550 like he does for his XM18's

Oh wow that looks amazing. Do I have to send my knife to him or can he just make the scales without the knife?

You have to send the knife. I'll fully admit at first I was iffy isn't I loved the knife and hadn't ever sent one to someone before but Barry really made me feel comfortable by emailing and even calling me when they arrived and kept me updated step by step as he did it. He has my 100% trust. And I almost felt like I robbed him for what he charged. Couldn't be happier

I was perusing my regular flashlight supplies shop Lighthound.com last Thursday for a replacement bulb and was shocked to see they had the 0551 in stock! I had all but given up on getting one, haven't heard a peep from from two separate pre-orders since December. Should be here tomorrow! Can't wait!
Will be snapping up an orange scale once Mr. Hinderer makes them available.

Wait, Rick will be making scales for the 551? Geez too many choices! What is he going to offer?

I think he's only hinted thus far, he made a post in another thread about it.

I just sent my 0551 to him this week for a smooth carbon fiber scale. It should be back in May. And his price for a custom scales is MUCH lower than I expected. It's worth sending him a PM and discussing the project.

You'll get it back in May?! I can't be without mine that long. :D

I'll probably break down and do it eventually, but it'll be a while.
