Heya all, I was hoping somebody could give me some much needed advice please? I recently bought a BUSSE NMSFNO from a dealer called FRAMAR Knives which is based at Blackburn in the UK. When I went to look at the knife and meet Frank who is the owner of the shop I was extremely happy with the Busse and after having a chat for a good hour with Frank I purchased the blade. The knife itself was in top notch condition no major use and no major scratches and it came with a nice kydex sheath. Anyhow here is the problem!! I went camping 2 days ago and this is the first time I got to use the Knife and I decided to chop some very small branches as firewood, after doing so which the Busse did quite with ease ( but it does need some time taken to sharpen it properly ) I stuck the knife into a tree stump ( The knife has a penertrator tip ) When I removed the knife I noticed that a small piece of the blade coating had come off the knife??? I decided I was not going to use it anymore that evening and so used my Hultafors axe to produce my firewood.
After coming home the next day and having a good look at the knife I was a little worried about this very small piece of coating coming off the blade after so little use. I am now at the part where I am really worried!!! I have just been outside in my garden to do the same again and stick the knife into the top of a tree stump so the knife is held in place, I did this twice and after the second time I looked at the penertrator tip and have noticed that even more blade coating has separated away from the knife and I can even now use my finger nail to peel the coating off???? This has me really worried and quited pissed off bcos I have only just bought this knife and it cost me a hell of a lot of money £300 which is around $500

Please could I have some opinions on this from you guys? who have a lot more experience with blades than me!!

Thankyou

Matt

I've had this happen to a Swamp Rat I had. While it's a pain for it to come off so easy, it's going to come off eventually. No coating lasts very long if you actually use the knife. If you're really concerned just call Busse. They'll fix it for you.

Coatings come off with usage. Did you expect to use the knife and it would stay pristine?
There are no coatings that will withstand chopping, except for natural patina, which will change.

Hey Guys, Thankyou for your feedback it is much appreciated, If u guys are from The US u are so lucky, The best blades and the best wilderness in the World to choose from!!! As a reply to Karda no I certainly didn't expect it to stay pristine and if I was going to buy any other Busse apart from a TGLB I probably wouldn't use the knife. I bought the NMSFNO because I love the design as a survival camp knife and when I contacted the dealer and felt so luck to have the chance to purchase one here in the UK I was more than happy. I just feel that I have hardly used this baled and the coating is peeling off with my finger nail ( I aint no freddy Kreuger either ) Having said that though, the knife is pre-owned and will have been stood for some time, but I just did not expect this atall, also what will the knife look like when all the coating comes off, which is going to happen and soon!!

Thanks again for the info.

Matt

They look good with the coating gone, it igves them character. The coating serves as protection from corrosion, but Busse knives are pretty resistant on their own. One the whole, I like my Busse knives without coating, they look nice and I have had no rust problems.

Hey jstn, Thanks man, so did the Busse blades that u own have a coating on them first? I am sorry I cant provide pics of mine just yet but it has a black blade with green and black mircata scales, and it looks as if the blade itself is black underneath where the coating is coming off ( the knife is so beautiful it seems a shame to use it lol but I needed a great quality blade that I could use which is going to last me basically all my life, and I am not one of these who will use it to chop through trees ) I was going to buy a Fallkniven A2 but when I knew I could get myself a Busse without the hassle of shipping and possible customs hassle it was a no brainer.

Regards

Matt

I don't own a Busse yet, Only Swamp Rat and Scrap yard at the moment. But their coatings and all my other coated knives are pretty darn tough. No way could I scratch down to bare metal with a finger nail.

Are you sure it's a factory coating? Could you post a picture? Maybe ask that this be moved to the Busse forum? I am sure the hogs will be able to help you.

I am going to have to go with blame-it-on-god tbh, I have used this knife once and I have not even processed much firewood with it atall, I am really wishing I would have spent my £300 on a Fallkniven A2. The blade is scratched in places also and I just do not feel impressed atall:confused:

It's still a good blade. But I tend to think it was "touched up" by the previous owner. You could probably have it re-finished. Or sell it on for what you paid.

If the blade looks black underneath, then it means the coating isn't completely off. Basically, the rough coating has just been smoothed out. Their coating is meant to do that with use. If it was all the way gone it would be silver in color. Unless the previous owner did something stupid to the blade, it will easily last you your lifetime. And if it doesn't, Busse will fix any and all damage for you. They will even recoat it for you if you send it in. Their warratny is excellent and part of the reason their blades are pricey.

My Busse knives without coating came that way, one with a satin finish and one with a competition finish. Comp finish is more prone to rust than satin, but I haven't had trouble with either. I just like the look of bare steel as many do, and the knives don't show use as much, but the coating wearing off will have no bearing on the functional capabilities of the knife.

The black crinkle coat wears the fastest of their coatings from what I have personally seen.

The Desert Sage and Tanker Gray wear the slowest as they just smooth out and really wear very slow.

Ummmmmm you're worried about scratches!?!? ....seriously !?!? :O

Yes. :D

(the yardhook was pristine, now traded and not a user fyi but the TGLB and R9 are thumpers for sure! most of the coating is gone off of the main bevel now as this is an older pic...)

My guess is a couple make it through with bad coatings. I have first hand experience with the same issue on my M6. I could literally peel it off like the OP says. The other two Rats I had didn't have that problem.

You should see the hell I put my NMSFNO through. Mine still looks pretty good despite some expected wear. Though on mine there is no way I could scrape the finish off with my fingernail. You could always strip and polish.

Sharpe,
don't let that coating decide whether you like the knife. I strip the coating off all my blades with paint stripper (every brand) as soon as I get them. coating is going to flake off the tip like it did on yours. it is going to scratch and flatten and wear along the blade itself with any significant usage (especially processing wood). it even scratches and wears when you sheath and unsheathe it if you're using kydex. on ANY blade. and some coatings are tougher than others.

but, and it's a big BUT, coating has zero to do with blade performance (well, except that I actually feel like it detracts from sliceability a little. I think/imagine I feel it 'drag' more than an uncoated blade).
INFI is a great steel. not the toughest steel, not the hardest steel, but high on both, so you have a tough knife that can take a beating and maintain it's edge for a long time.
make sure it feels right in your hand (I've sold off more great knives than I can count because they just didn't fit in my hand right, so they weren't the right knives for ME). if it feels good in hand, the SFNO is a winner of an all purpose knife. get it to the level of sharpness you want (and you are already working on that). I love Busses, but I usually spend some time sharpening them and at the same time thinning the shoulder of the bevel, because they run Thick. for my particular usage they cut a lot better after I spend that time sharpening and thinning the shoulder.

if you do keep it, the coating is going to wear. you may like that look, you may decide to strip it eventually. personal preference.
regardless, you'll get to steel eventually. and with coated blades, manufacturers don't spend as much time sanding to a pristine satin finish, since it's getting a layer of paint put on it. so any exposed blade you see will be a little rougher finished than one of your satin-finished blades. again, doesn't affect performance at all. and I actually like the look. look around at pics of any of the user coated blades floating around, any brand. they all wear off with use.

here's one I stripped on purpose right after I got it, since any regular usage of a coated knife is going to wear it away eventually. I like to hurry the process to get it how I like it quicker.....

BATAC before (third one down).

and after: note the rougher flat of the blade, and the mild grind lines you can see on the flat of the blade itself. as mentioned, they don't spend as much time on the final sandings if it's going to be coated. but the edge is wicked sharp and thinned and it cuts like a demon for me. love this knife:

good news for you, if you decide it's not the right knife for you, you can probably re-sell it quickly at what is most likely a minimal loss....
take care.

Fair enough, pretend then Hotdog lol You have your use for a knife I have mine and it looks like u have been wiping a mountains arse with that TGLB, Which is something I wouldn't use a Knife for. Im just a little concerned when I pay for the best and the best aint good enough ( chopping wood ect ect ) so then I start to worry because I aint a rich man and I have paid what I consider a lot of money for a knife. I really do feel from what I have read and seen on a lot of these blade forums is that people or either trying to rip ur blummin eyes out or they don't have the slightest idea what they are talking about because the knife they own could cut through Jupiter just cos it got a star dust price tag on it.

Thanks for the advice guys

Think I will get back to basics and listen to the INDIANS:barf:

Hey man, thankyou for the info and pics, those look great, I am tring to get u a pic of mine back now.
