Problem with my BUSSE NMSFNO!! Help Please!!

I don't have very many coated blades but, of the ones I do have, the SFNO is without a doubt the most durable. I think I'd chip a nail (oh no! ) before I was able to flake it off with a fingernail. I have beat the crap out of mine and done things I wouldn't do with any other knife I've used except another Busse, and it still has most of its coating. It has smoothed out a lot though, like Ankerson mentioned.

I have to say, I have owned many knifes from different manufacturers.

No coating will stay pristine from sticking the knife in a stump.

I have owned about 12 Busse, and coating coming off from stabbing the tip into wood is pretty normal (for Busse and non busse). If large sections are coming off or peeling back easily, there may be something wrong.

I feel like the Black Crinkle suffers more from tip chip, than some of the other color coatings, but they all suffer wear, the tip stab into wood seems to do a number on the coating right at the tip, more so than chopping!

You paid for the strongest knife. When the paint comes off, you still have the strongest knife. The paint is just that. Paint. The magic is the steel. Infi.

Use the heck out of it, then when the paint gets all beat up, strip that sucker with paint stripper, and keep on using it!

I only have two knives from Busse that I have not stripped. SarQ and a KZII. Both finishes have wear, but my stripper dried up, and I have been too lazy to buy more.

If you want pretty, buy a satin, or the comp finish TG's (they are not polished, but I love that finish. Great user).

If you wanted, I am sure the shop would fix it, but since you on an Island, I don't know how you guys can ship anything. I guess a boat, and wait the 7 months or more for turn around and shipping back. (Just giving you a hard time).

Probably cost prohibitive (not to mention hassle, time and worry) shipping that sucker back over here.

I bet if you rounded up enough expensive scotch and tasty food, the Boss Hog would make a trip (or pilgrimage) over there, and you could just hand the sucker to him. You would have to post a lot of pictures of the alcohol and food!

The coating should not peel off like that. It will wear of in time though...

You should contact Busse directly, and they will take of you. I am certain, they would recoat your blade.

The crinkle coat they use is VERY durable, at it peeling off so easily tells me, that your blade has a faulty coat.
Having not seen the blade, this is just the best guess I can give.

You wanted to chop wood with it. And the knife can handle it easily. You should be able to chop wood forever and the knife won't break.

If you want performance, you've got it.

If you want a pretty knife, don't use it.

If I remember correctly, when my Scrapyard 511 was BNIC (c for cardboard) I was able to take a tiny chip of the coating off of the spine at the tip as well in the same manner before I'd put it to use. We're talking like 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch here, nothing major at all. Now, all the coating is gone from use and some abuse :D and a gun blued finish takes it's place! Ya gotta love SR101 steel!

I think it happened due to the fact the coating gets ground off at the edge creating a weak point or separation due to heat maybe or at least looks that way. I'll try it on my BNIC 1311 tonight. I know, not a Busse, but still in the same family... ;)

I would say use the crap out of the blade and forget about the coating.
After a good while and a few sharpening later, send it to Busse for a new coating with your choice of color and fresh edge.
For a very reasonable fee your knife will come back looking brand new.

I say strip the coating. Here's my M6 that I referred to in my post. Sooooo much better looking without the coating IMO.

Strip the coating off and give it a hand satin finish with 600 grit sandpaper. ;) it will look amazing.

Huh, they put coatings on Busse knives, never saw much of a point myself:D

But seriously, looking forward to the pics, black crinkle coat is the easiest of them all to remove ( either with stripping, chopping or batoning)

Good news is the NMSFNO usually looks pretty good under the coating. I've got a can of stripper out in the garage, just been too lazy to get around to it.

This was under Jungle Green coating.
I spent just a few minutes with a scotch brite belt.

I bought a Battle Rat a few years back and didn't care for the rough coating so I took some sandpaper and smoothed it out. It looks a lot better to me now and the remaining coating seems to be holding up well with use.

I agree with you that the SFNO is just about perfect for a Camp/Survival knife and I hate it when the coating gets messed up, That's why I got one without the coating.;)

I'd do what RevDevil said, Strip it and make it satin.

My solution? Sell it cheap to me! Here in the UK they are not easy to get hold of.

I actually have been thinking of selling mine because I could use the money but then I would just have to watch the Sales Forum to buy another one when I have the money again.
You guys over there can buy one off of the forum as well though it would probably cost you $50 or more to ship from here to there, A satin SFNO just sold yesterday I believe for less than $500.

Sorry guys, wont let me post pics, Im only a registered user maybe? So if I wanted all of the balde coating off ( which I don't ) I could just use scotch bright and get it so the blade has a satin finish??

Thanks again for you replies

Matt
