Problem with my new Zero Tolerance 0562 slicer

https://zt.kaiusaltd.com/pdfs/catalogs/LITZT2017_web.pdf
The new 2017 catalog doesn't list any knives with Elmax. All that used to be Elmax are now s35vn.

I think I read somewhere that it was asked at shot show about the change and it was because they could get enough Elmax to keep up with production.

Elmax is great from KAI, they never had any problems with it. Elmax problems are just a BF and YT "urban legend".

Thanks, you beat me to it. It just started this year. I'm sure many distributors haven't updated their listings.

And for the record, I'm not saying that ZT's Elmax was bad, only that there were complaints about it. I've got no hens in that particular thumb war.

Maybe it's a fake? Although it seems unlikely that they got all the little details right on the knife then printed the wrong steel type on the blade, but you never know. Everything else I know to look at is spot on, the thumb-stud machining (clones are fully rounded), pivot machining, feel of the G-10, etc...

Definitely worth looking into, it was an authorized dealer through Amazon so a return wouldn't be an issue. If this is a clone it is one hell of a clone.

Definitely not a fake (at least, not due to the S35VN). As per the 2017 Kai catalog. S35VN is standard now for the G10 version.

Thanks - that's all I was looking for. I wonder when those versions started hitting dealers. It does seem odd that none of the dealers have updated the steel, if that's what they have.

Not really surprising. I've seen this with many different dealers over the years and with many different manufactures. They don't update the listings for minor steel changes most of the time, only for model changes. I'm not saying every dealer is like this however quite a few are very slow on changing specs if they change them at all.

ZT's elmax is excellent. someone spread a rumor about it, that is all. anyone who says otherwise is just spreading a rumor they heard and don't have any evidence to back it up.

my zt 0562cf w/ CTS 204p is awesome slicer, and love to flip it. but gotta say I won't trade my pm2 carbon fiber/m4 because of it. both great blades. maybe you should sell your pm2 and get the cf/m4 version.

I have no issue with Crucible steel, every knife I've had with it has been fantastic, holds a good edge, sharpens relatively easily. I just never had Elmax steel so I was looking forward to it. Maybe I'll get a Kershaw Blur in Elmax, I had one I bought new on-sale for like $40, it was a tanto blade and it was the best $40 knife I've ever owned. I gave it to my son and somehow he broke it, not sure how he managed it.

My favorite steel is the Southard's CTS 204p, I'll see how the s35vn compares.

Thanks for that 2017 ZT knives datasheet, I can rest assured that my knife is indeed legit.

I think the 0562 is one of the best all-around knives in my collection. Other than the boring factory scale I can't find anything to dislike about it, but that's an easy fix. My Sypderco Southard is alright but it's definitely not a great flipper compared to most of my others. To me that knife is pretty "meh". If I didn't like the custom scale on it so much I would probably sell it.

I recently bought an elmax 0562 and am finding the detent quite strong and despite opening it a few hundred times it still sticks sometimes.

Now I'm wondering if I should return it and find a (hopefully easier to open) S35nv version.

I've found some variation between different examples of 0562's in regard to the detent strength. A newer model might have a less hard detent, or it might not. It's a toss up.

as he said check the catalog, the 0770 in cf is also s35vn. they are moving to s35vn it would appear. I know they mismatched some stamping in kershaws and marked them as others when the were s35 saw them on the Kershaw guy site.

Where is the source of this information? I had a problem with the HT on my 0560. And I know several others who did. Why is that me just starting a rumor because you had a different result?

Show me where it's for sale with S35 now.

This the the only place I could find and this is a FAKE. http://m.dhgate.com/product/zero-tolerance-zt0562-cf-hinderer-cpm-s35vn/375893586.html#pd-024

Do you honestly think when a change happens like this that dealers just jump to the computer to change the information? Usually its customers calling to complain they didn't get what they paid for. This happens all the time. You cant trust dealers to have all the correct information.

You could check with a couple dealers to see if the S35VN has been released yet. If not, then maybe it's fake.

I'm sure some dealers haven't updated their product information, and that they haven't sold out of all their Elmax stock. None if which changes the fact that the knife is currently produced in S35VN.

Anyways, the length of this discussion is now vastly out of proportion with my interest in it.
