Problems at Camillus - will they survive?

i wish i was computer literate enough to transfer my post from another thread...united we bargan, divided we beg. the pendlum swings both ways.
we all see the benefits and excesses on both sides. once you vote yourself
some freebees, then we might have to do it again and again. we rationalize
that they'd do it to us, if they could. in the interest, of security, for their members, you can't fire a teacher. how's the educational system? who's responsible anymore? there are excesses, on both sides, of this discussion
that desparately need to be addressed! as we loose industry to the chi-coms, we loose the ability to protect ourselves.

If it's true that management has not invested in machines in 20 years, unless they're sitting on a giant pile of cash or land a very lucrative contract, long term survival looks doubtful.

Gentlebeings, some of the posts in this thread don't seem to have much to do with Blade Discussion. Perhaps you could toddle off to the Political Arena to continue that part of the discussion....

Who didn't see that comming?;)

Living in a Coal Field area I have seen my share of Union "stuff", the one thing I will always remember is my Uncle's mine going on strike over the kind of soap that provided for them free in the showers, I think the strike lasted over 6 months, this was in the mid 80's. People wonder what happened to all the jobs, Unions over killed their usefulness, Yes without them work conditions where intolerable 50 years ago and I think the employees had every right to form unions and fight for their rights but when unions start controlling everything it gets bad.

All the employees at a mine had to pay union dues, fair, one employee was the union "boss" and made 2X what the others did to do nothing but collect and make sure they paid their dues....BS.

Unions need the smack knocked out of them now days.

Also I think we should ship Union bosses over to China to form unions for those workers, 10 years from then and the jobs will start coming back here.[/QUOTEspeaking as someone who worked a union mine until I was disabled in a mining accident.I still pay my dues even though I don't have too because I believe in unions.
too complain about workers making too much when they usually get a pittance of what management gets is odd.
the longest strike that I can remember was 111 days in 1977 because contract expired.
six months strike over the kind of soap used I seriously doubt that.
Unions aren't perfect but they're better than the alternative.

Perhaps they used to be in the past. Unfortunately, they have morphed into bizarre institutions that promote passivity, boxed way of thinking, and stiffle initiative. I've been teaching technology for many years now. Dealing with unionized employees taught me quite a bit. Whenever we get to the part in the material that is not in their direct job description, even if it is required to better understand the rest of the material, they just refuse to even hear it. It's like dealing with children. They will demonstrate their obstinancy by flagrantly turning to others and striking up conversations to their own and others' detriment. I've grown to disdain that attitude.

And look at the teachers' unions - there is not a single institution in this country less concerned with the education of children. Instead they promote leftist, anti-American political agenda, condone using children for staged anti-government demonstrations, allow mixing educational material with questionable causes du jour because it is supported by their favorite political whore looking for votes. It is contemptible.

edited to correct a typo

You know, as interesting as the give and take on the role of unions has been, I think the real reasons Camillus and others are hitting hard times are A) China (obviously), B) fewer and fewer Americans carry pocketknives, and C) those who do carry lean more and more toward Leatherman-type multi-tools.

It's really bittersweet if you think about it. In one way, we're really in a golden age of cutlery. Sooooo much innovation, so many cool knives to choose from, and all so affordable. On the other hand, we're watching a large chunk of America's knife-making sector wither and die.

Must have been like what the folks in Sheffield went through - what? - a hundred years ago? When all the cutlers left for the NE United States, I mean.

I think the main reason for Camillus' demise is the knife market is over saturated and their is too much competition. Knife collectors are buying more than ever because of the net and magazines and knife tv shopping shows. There are more knife companies than ever. Even Surefire known for flashlights sells knives now.

China IS a union. The whole country. They need the work, are culturaly very patient and shrewd. If our knife and other manufacturers do buissness there, it is not the fault of the chinese. Americans are in a tough bind, but WE put us there, and we will continue to slide downhill. Having gotten that out of the way, are there any Chinese manufacturers who do produce high quality knifes? Are there any good makers over there?
