Problems with 1095

Yeah...Wow! I never thought of using a turkey fryer. Great idea.

Flatgrinder, on SS i have 2 aluminium plates 1"x12x24 that I quench on with forced air blowing in. I normally do not mess with carbon steels, but I have a large project coming up and need to practice before Ht'ing something say 26 to 28" long:D. I am waiting on a beautiful piece of exhibition grade Koa wood that is around 30" long. I really do not want to mess up, its not a order or anything like that just a desire to build something long and cool?

The edges on these knifes where pushing it they where dead on at .035:eek:, I will leave a bit more next time.

I cleaned up the flats real quick and rockwelled them they all came right in at 64, so they should temper in just fine.

Sorry but my experience with admiral has been less than great so I order it from Sheffields, I like stuff to arrive while I am still alive. I may have to try them again.

Thanks Again
Spencer

My 1095 is working great, it feels good to progress with the trade. Being able to HT steels with confidence is a humbling experience.

I just got some 1095 from Aldo, I got mine a week after I mailed the check to him. The stuff is probably a bit thick for stock removal, but if Aldo has anything in a dimension that works for you, I'd get it from him, I got some 1084 from him and it was great stuff, and as I said the 1095 I got showed up on my doorstep within a week of mailing the check to him.

If your steel stock is thin, maybe you would be better off grinding the bevels after heat treat.

I think I cured my problems with 1095, like to thank everyone for the solid input.

Well done, sir. Once i started using W2 and 1084 exclusively (no edge quenching), I bought myself 5 gallons of Parks #50 and one of those cheapo HD 30 qt turkey fryers. It works great.
