Problems with SOG anyone?

Hello folks,

Just looking for some comments on this...I have a decent sized knife collection, I have never had problems with any of my knives except for two of them....both SOG's. I really don't get it...I know the quality is supposed to be great. The first one...a Pentagon Elite, the lock failed...the company in all fairness, was fantastic, and replaced the knife with a newer arc-lock model. Last night I opened my Pentagon Elite II, (a real nasty knife btw..lol), and the arc-lock mechanism came apart and flew across the room. I couldn't believe it. I will get in touch with the company again...but I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing such problems with SOG's, particulary the Pentagon line.

I have several other knife companies in my collection; Benchmade, Kershaw, Buck, Spyderco, CRKT, most of the usual suspects...and never have had a malfunction with any of them. I am just kind of baffled...I have always thought SOG offered a good product...maybe I am just unlucky.

All of my SOG's are fixed blades, mainly the Bowies. I think they are well made, and immensely nice looking pieces.

I bought a Twitch XL from NewGraham and it was all messed up. Looked like someone had taken it apart and not put it back together properly.

I live near SOG so I went there and talked to them. They took it in the back and dinked with it (they didn't nothing more complicated than that!) and brought it back out. It was still messed up but better. They said that was all they would do for me.

I ended up sending it back to NewGraham who took care of it (of course). But I couldn't help feeling let down by SOG. Sure they looked at me funny like I'd messed it up. There was no way for me to prove it that I didn't (though I'd had it for about 15 minutes when I brought it to them).

You'd think the company would make it right, right? When they didn't I was not impressed. That's Wally World level of service. I expected better.

Why didn't they just give you a new knife??? What a bunch of jerks!:jerkit:
Because of your experience, I'm not going to buy any more of their products.
- Thanks

I give SOG an average rating in regards to quality of products. I have had to deal with their customer service tho.

I would have to look long and hard before buying their stuff again as well.

I have a sog twitch and mine rusted inside the handle towords the back. Also, thats the only knife i own that ive ever seen rust on.

It was a bit of a letdown. Especially since I was at the Home Office!

It's funny, here we are hanging out with Sal and other people who care about people who use their products. SOG may not be that bad, but definitely doesn't live up to the bar set by other companies.

Yeah, I had heard SOG was supposed to be pretty high quality, so I bought an X-Ray Vision (same lock as the Pentagon Elite, I think). After I opened and closed it a few times, the lock blew up in my hands. I sent it in and they were great and took care of me, but now I don't carry/ use the knife anymore for fear the lock will fail.

:thumbdn:

When my Pentagon Elite broke...I have to give the company kudos...they were prompt and very good about replacing it. I am sure I will have the same good service when I return the PE II. I wasn't knocking the service they gave me, it was fairly top-rate...but the product...I am just bewildered. My buddy loves the SOG's and swears by them...but I am not so sure right now. The only use my PEII ever saw...was me opening and closing it quickly a few times in succession about 1x a month...if that is abusing a knife...I better start collecting anvils instead.

Hate to bag on a company, but I had a Twitch II that would not open via the assisted opening unless the pivot was so loose that the blade flopped back and forth. After about a month, the spring broke. Finally, I was able to overpower the lock and close it even with the lock engaged. Sorry, but never again for me.

I own about 8 SOG's and have never had any problems at all. I've carried a Twitch 2 everyday for the last two years and used it for things that no knife was meant to do. Maybe my knives were made on a Tuesday and yours were made on a Friday. Stranger things have happen! (this sure is a great site!!)

I have a Twitch II, a Tomcat 3.0, and a Powerlock, and all three have exceeded my expectations.
My Twitch II did work perfectly fine out of the box, and still works perfect to this day.
However, I have heard a few stories regarding the AO of the Twitches acting up.

I needed to slighty modify the sheaths of a Gov and a Tsunami to be able to get the knives out of the sheaths while on the belt. No problems with the knives though.

I own over 25 sog knives and I have never had anything break or fail they are a great company IMHO. I EDC a flash II and a twitch II.

My older SOG Tomcat (no thumb stud) is a solid knife, but the rear bolster is showing rust specks. Considering that I don't carry that knife and it's spent the past few years in its nylon sheath in a drawer, in a dry climate, that seems odd to me. None of my other knives have rusted like that.

I have a Pentagon Elite that feels very well made to me. I play with it a lot and haven't had problems with the mechanism.

Yeah, actually I just recently had and have an issue with SOG. I bought a seal Pup Elite. The knife is fine, great actually but the sheath has issues. There is not sheath tension, the knife will just fall strait out of the sheath. Now this sheath is brand new! Never used, no signs of use. So I emailed Sog [which was my first mistake] about the problem and all they wanted to know was if my sheath was older than 30 days. Well yes it is actually and no I dont have any proof of purchase. Well heres what she said,

Hi Jonathan,
We are truly sorry that is this is the issue. We have a policy in place for a reason as I am sure you understand. I am also truly sorry that you would like to place blame on the warranty administrator who is only doing her job. I didn’t get to make policy, I just have to uphold it. Thanks for understanding and have a great day!

This was our second email and I am pissed! I cant believe that Sog would not replace my sheath. We are talking about a $25.00 product and thats retail, imagine what is actually cost them. It would not of been so bad if there PR person would actually try to work with you or maybe practice some sort of manners. You know I could go on and on about this so let me sum this up, quality control just like there warranty department needs some changes!

First, you realize that you resurected a three year old thread for this right?

Second, from that response, it sounds like you said some not so nice things in your first e-mail to them. Because I've had to send a few things in for warranty repair and was treated very fairly and politely by their customer service. They have pretty good customer service, definately some quality control issues, but good service.

I have had no issues with their knives in general. I tend to loose pocket knives and often don't have them for more than a year. That is what happened to two SOG Flash II's which I bought someplace like Lowes. Seems my worker bees may have some of my knives, but I can't prove it.

SOG has been okay with me. A couple years ago when the Seal Pup Elite came out, I bought it with the kydex sheath. At a show, I visited with SOG and indicated at the time that I wasn't crazy about the sheath. They sent me one of their new nylon sheaths free of charge. So I have two sheaths to use with the knife depending on what I am doing with it. I was happy about that and have bought more than a couple of their knives since.

I have heard complaints with their customer service group in the last year or so. My guess is that it was hurting their bottom line. As a result, I think they have lost some sales.
