Problems with SOG anyone?

I don't like SOG folders at all. I've owned a fair few other brands (Case, Gerber, Buck, Benchmade, Spyderco) and have never had a fit & finish issue with any of them, until SOG. I bought an Aegis last November, thinking that I could snag a decent folder for a great price. Wrong. The plastic of the handle was super flexy and felt beyond cheap. The blade came extremely loose, and just made the knife feel sloppy. The knife came very sharp, but seemed to lose the edge as soon as I even thought about cutting something. I feel you can do better for the money.

I'm not a huge fan of SOG's less expensive knives. I do have a few of their fixed blades (all discontinued/changed), as well as a Night Vision and a Vulcan. The Night Vision and Vulcan both exceeded my expectations. They are the smoothest opening folders I own. In my opinion, once you get up to the more expensive knives SOG makes, the quality goes up drastically. That's just my experience.

I have a Seal Pup, Field Pup, Powerlock, Kilowat, 3 Throwers, and two Microns. I have had no isues with any of them. 5 fixed blades. 3 folders. 1 multi tool. All perfect, good price, workmanship, and scary sharp. Almost forgot Sogzilla (folder).

the only sog that i have is an aegis and the lockup was sh*t. no matter what i couldn't get a tight lock up. also the pivot screw loosened really easy.

I had an Aegis a while back and liked it for the most part...it was actually a really great knife to use but it started to develope more and more play over time and the jimping was never useful. i haven't bought another SOG since but i am not saying i never would again. and also, the aegis was the only sog folder i've owned but the fixers i've used have been great.

I have the Flash I. Blade play that can't be fixed, and the pocket clip screw stripped the female threads in the Zytel handle under normal tightening. That was enough for me...
The only thing I like about that knife is the blade.

I have sold maybe 200 SOG's and I know there has never been a problem or complaint about the fixed blade knives but I have had several (4) complaints about the folders.

the last I was told there where no issues getting them replaced.

then again not all customers share everything.

I have an older Flash II and a Visionary II. Both have been excellent.
I am continually amazed by the amount of Sog bashing on this board.

One of my wine openers is a SOG Vino. It is also excellent.

I have a SOG tomcat 3.0, and find it very well made. Solid as anyone could ask for in a heavy folder. Nothing to complain about IMO...

How did the lock "blow up"???

I have a visionary with the arc lock and it seems solid. I have not tried taking it apart but it does make sense that it may be harder to put back together than a simple lockback knife. There is a spring with some tension on it.

How did they fail anyway, thats what I want to know.

I have had two sog knives and liked them both. I must admit though that because of some of their recent knives being close to plagarism I have reservations about buying some of their new stuff. Maybe next year when new knives come out.

I got a small Twitch in trade a few years back. It was nicely constructed, I dug the lockback incorporating a flipper. The drop point FFG blade was also nice. I gave it to my Dad and the spring for the AO is always disengaged when I see him. It's not easy to put that spring back into the proper alignment. If they had a more reliable AO like the Kershaw torion bar that would be a great little knife. I think next time I see him i'm going to remove the spring and make it a manual opener.

I've had a couple of their knives and they were pretty well finished. In use, there were no problems. However, they were all made in Seki and were easily on par with any of the knives from other production companies made there at a similar pricepoint. I did end up selling all of them but one as I had too many knives. I sold a small vulcan, large tanto vulcan, and an arcitech. All with arc-locks that were very solid and very smooth. I kept another arcitech because I loved the design so much. It's very classy, yet strong, and the lock has never given me problems.
I also purchased a Twitch II (that was engraved and came in a wooden SOG collector's box) that I gave as a present to a friend who's never had any issues with it.
However, I haven't felt the need to purchase any more SOGs because the designs haven't really appealed to me. Also, after reading some of the recent horror stories regarding the company's practices and new direction, I'm happy with the one I have until there's a compelling reason to purchase another SOG.

I personally never had a problem witt any of my SOG knives. I called their customer service number once and they were very helpful and knowledgeable in answering my question.

Not much experience with SOGs, so take it for what it is worth. Just a Flash 2 which I returned. Mainly because it was too small for my hand, but also did not care for the feel or mechanism.

I have 2 SOG folding knives: one is an older model, I don't even remember the name; the other one is a Spec Elite II. My only "complaint": the handle is a bit too big. To me, they are very well made knives.

A large part of this thread is about bad things about SOG...I was just curious if this applied to their Tomcat 3.0 and Vulcan folder as I plan to get those as my first 2 couple of knives..

Is it a good idea? or would i be making a mistake with this one?

I am looking for a general all purpose folder that I could take when I go mountain climbing and camping, and maybe occasional EDC... but more for outdoors, just in case I get lost. Basically a knife i can rely on for those unexpected emergencies outdoors, and something I could use everyday for basic knife needs.

If you guys think that these 2 knives are a bad choice, please let me know what other knives from other companies I should be looking at. Thanks for any input you guys may have.

From what I've been reading, a lot of SOG are not very good except for a few, and from I've read, the Tomcat 3, Vulcan and Arcitech are some the best that SOG has to offer. Is this correct? Among the three, which would be the best to get and why? Thanks..

I don't care for their folders. Every single SOG folder I have owned has developed excessive and unacceptable blade play within a very short period of use. Their fixed blades are nice, but are priced a little high in my estimation.
