hey all it's been awhile since I last posted but since you all have been so much help I thought I'd show you guys where I'm at
I got my flat bar stock of 1/4" 5160 from IB2V4U (thanks again) in trade for some antler for handle material.
I drew out my design how I wanted it, then modified it, thanks to some constructive criticism, to better serve my needs this knife will be a hunter with a full tang and deer antler scales
after getting it drawn out I sent the steel and the 1:1 scale drawing to my brother in law to cut a blank on the waterjet at his work

my design

the OAL is 8.5" the blade length is 4"
got a call this weekend that my blank is ready I can come pick it up

the tip is a bit narrower than the drawing but I think I can work with that
now the fun stuff filing and sanding this knife shaped peice of metal into a sharp functional blade

Interested to see how it finally turns out. Good to see another Edmontonian on here too!

yeah I'm excited to get working on it. but as of right now I can only work on it on weekends as I have no tools and have to drive out past stony plain to the In-Laws place to use the father in law's garage.
where about In edmonton u at? I'm in Castle Downs

Yeah, I like your hamon. The only thing I would suggest is to make sure that it doubles back on itself toward the tip to make sure it gets hardened properly.

thanks for the comments guys
the Hamon I drew in just as a laugh. I'd love it to have a hamon, but I wont be HTing this knife myself it will go back to IB2V4U for HT and temper.

yeah and I don't think you can get any activity out of 5160 super blade though great job and keep um coming

Hey the profile looks good. Get out the files and go to work be patient. Hurrying is the best way to make a mistake. Won't get no harmon on a 5160 blade is true. But. I can do an edge quench for you and you will get a differential line if you get it polished up. Jim

no just regular quench will be fine for this one. just gonna take it to a satin finish cuz I'm gonna use it alot and dont wanna have to worry about it getting scratched up.... also I have no idea what I'm gonna do about a sheath for this knife I've never worked with leather b4...

I'm on the Griesbach, we are pretty close to each other. I have a couple of tools set up in my cramped basement so I feel for you too.

hey all...
well this weekend I got a real surprise, I took my knife blank out to the in-law's farm to do some filing on it friday night and my father in law tells me that a buddy of his used to make knives and he'd give him a call to see if he'd come give me some pointers...
saturday morning he came over and what a cool guy. he used to make knives for his buddys ( father in law's hunting knife) never sold any or anything but his brother is a professional knife maker. he tells me he hasnt made a knife in a few years but still has his bench top cone grinder and all the tools and materials kicking around in his garage. then he says if I want he'll bring everything he can find out to the farm and show me how to make a good knife. and hes gonna leave the stuff there so I can make lots of knives now :D

Abd he is off and running. Good luck and let me know if ya need anything. Your still on for the heat treat if you need it. Jim

just a note, when you get a blade blank cut on the waterjet be carefull as the edges are sharp... found this out the hard way last night didnt cut myself too bad but enough to be a bother right on the end of my thumb :(

I got to do some grinding this weekend on my knife. no pix yet but I'll get to it
the grinder is called a cone lock it's a 10" X 2" disk that you open in half, wrap around with 2" sanding belts then close the disk back up pinching the loose ends of the belt inside. tou then tighten the cone shaped locking bit until the disk is tightly closed. does a good job. Dennis the guy who is letting me use all this stuff, brought 3 big boxes of knife making materials and tools that he hasnt touched since '89. gave me a lesson on how to set up the grinder and change the sand paper. then told me when I'm ready to start putting it together he'll help me do a nickle silver bolster with nickle pins. Now I have to decide do I still want to do antler scales or go with a set of bookmatched exotic wood scales...... choices choices

That is looking pretty nice. It is a personal decision but as modern as it looks you might even consider some sort of composite scales (micarta, g-10 carbon fiber).

Allen

ok just took some pix of my progress so far.
I think it's coming along nicely if I may say so myself :D
what do you think?
