That pipe would be perfect for a vertical forge, but will be a bit fat for a horizontal one. With 2" wool, that would make a 10" wide chamber. Not exactly a no-go, but a lot of space to heat that is not needed. You could put in 3" or 4" of wool, and get even more insulation and a smaller chamber. That would work well for a HT oven. Forging would be good in it too. Coat the wool with 1/4" of satanite and coat that with ITC-100. Put a floor of bubble alumina in to be just about even with the "Lazy-D" shaped ports (the "D" resting on its back). When not needed, block the rear port with a fire brick. One good burner will run this forge easily.
Whatever you decide on, I would build it with a blown burner if you are planning on doing HT. The blown burner will allow running at HT temps. A venturi can be hard to keep light at extended holds in the 1400F area.Adding PID control will make it a HT dream.
