Hammy, sorry if this is too political, but thought most HOGS would appreciate knowing this.

On Feb. 14, 2007, Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) introduced H.R. 1022, a bill with the stated purpose, “to reauthorize the assault weapons ban, and for other purposes.”
McCarthy’s verbiage warrants explanation. Presumably, what she means by “assault weapons ban” is the Clinton Gun Ban of 1994. Congress allowed the ban to expire in 2004 for multiple reasons, including the fact that federal, state and local law enforcement agency studies showed that guns affected by the ban had been used in only a small percentage of crime, before and after the ban was imposed.

With the nation’s murder rate 43% lower than in 1991, and the re-legalized guns still used in only a small percentage of crime, reauthorizing the Clinton Gun Ban would be objectionable enough. But McCarthy’s “other purposes” would make matters even worse. H.R. 1022 would ban every gun banned by the Clinton ban, plus millions more guns, including:

• Every gun made to comply with the Clinton ban. (The Clinton ban dictated the kinds of grips, stocks and attachments new guns could have. Manufacturers modified new guns to the Clinton requirements. H.R. 1022 would ban the modified guns too.)

• Guns exempted by the Clinton ban. (Ruger Mini-14s and -30s and Ranch Rifles; .30 cal. carbines; and fixed-magazine, semi-automatic, center-fire rifles that hold more than 10 rounds.)

• All semi-automatic shotguns. (E.g., Remington, Winchester, Beretta and Benelli, used for hunting, sport shooting, and self-defense. H.R. 1022 would ban them because they have “any characteristic that can function as a grip,” and would also ban their main component, called the “receiver.”)

• All detachable-magazine semi-automatic rifles-including, for example, the ubiquitous Ruger 10/22 .22 rimfire-because they have “any characteristic that can function as a grip.”

• Target shooting rifles. (E.g., the three centerfire rifles most popular for marksmanship competitions: the Colt AR-15, the Springfield M1A and the M1 “Garand.”)

• Any semi-automatic shotgun or rifle an Attorney General one day claims isn’t “sporting,” even though the constitutions of the U.S. and 44 states, and the laws of all 50 states, recognize the right to use guns for defense.

• 65 named guns (the Clinton law banned 19 by name); semi-auto fixed-magazine pistols of over 10 rounds capacity; and frames, receivers and parts used to repair or refurbish guns.

H.R. 1022 would also ban the importation of magazines exempted by the Clinton ban, ban the sale of a legally-owned “assault weapon” with a magazine of over 10 rounds capacity, and begin backdoor registration of guns, by requiring private sales of banned guns, frames, receivers and parts to be conducted through licensed dealers. Finally, whereas the Clinton Gun Ban was imposed for a 10-year trial period, H.R. 1022 would be a permanent ban.

Please be sure to contact your U.S. Representative and urge him or her to oppose H.R. 1022!

You can call your U.S. Representative at (202) 225-3121.

so what your saying is that Representative Carolyn McCarthy is an IDIOT

Thats why I kept all my pre-ban AR's I bought when I had my FFL in the late 80's and early 90's.

All said to sell before the ban expired, and they have sence lowered in price.
But I and alot of others felt that as sone as a Dem. gets back in it will be reactivated. If it's Mrs Cliton... well they will be far worse happen. The NRA crowd will keep her out though.

Democrat turned Republican Bloomberg is the one to worry about now!
He is leading a clique of big city and urban state gun-ban polititions.
They will not rest untill the gun-ban issue is brought back to life.

I'll stop now as I usually stay away from talking politics.
If any is affended I appoligize.

Just FYI, all shotguns with a bore over half an inch in diameter (e.g., 12 gauge) are already strictly regulated Class III "destructive devices" unless the Secretary deems them "sporting."

(Note that this law is not applied consistently. There's apparently a higher standard for "sporting" for imported shotguns than for those domestically produced. There's not logical or legal basis for the distinction, but when has the law ever prevented the BATFE from doing whatever the hell it pleases?)

Yep we knew it was coming as soon as they took control but man that was fast! You'd think they'd learned from last time when they lost both houses.
Just wait till Billary gets in there!

1) Screw her. Pardon the French. That's all I got.

God bless America and all it's conservative Republicans.

I see a civil war in this country coming soon if things dont change. Between gun control, illegal immigration, taxes, fuel cost, race issues, the war in iraq, welfare, and the slow transformation into a socialist country. This is going to start uprisings. I hoped to never see the day when this would happen but now I am starting to wonder if it will be happening sooner than I thought.

Also, just FYI-- The original "assault weapon" ban had a provision calling for a study of the effectiveness of the act. The Department of Justice was unable to find any reliable evidence that the ban had any effect on crime, and concluded: "Should it be renewed, the ban’s effects on gun violence are likely to be small at best and perhaps too small for reliable measurement."

Obviously, this is a serious problem that requires a federal solution at the earliest possible time.

Wars (uprisings) were started for less offences on the American people. Remember the Boston Tea Party?

Yep, I see that too. Just for the record, fuel costs, war, welfare, illegal immigration, and the transformation into a socialist country with a mega big-brother government have been skyrocketing during almost 7 years of ultra conservative dominance, on federal level.

As for our State (FL), lil' bro wasn't doing any better. Eight years of Jeb brought us tripple property taxes, quadruple homeowners insurance, and unimmaginable screw-ups during disasters like hurricane Charlie. God bless Charlie Crist (R) who now tries to undo some of the worst Bush caterings to multi billion $ businesses, like banks, insurances, and power companies in our State.

I was against Clinton's assault weapons ban, but I wasn't even impacted by it after it came into effect. Be honest, it was a joke. I could still buy whatever I wanted at any gun show, so I really don't know why that topic is such a sore spot with some people.

Note that this law is not applied consistently.
Name a gun law that is applied consitently by the ATFE.
I am amazed at what we as citizen have put up with so far. I, personally would like to see the NFA of '34 completely revoked. Instead we get this sh!t.

I highly value my right to bear arms, & any gun control legislation is a sore spot to me. Any victory for them is just getting us one step closer to what they want - no guns in citizens hands.

Couldnt agree more, I will do everything I can to keep them from restricting my right to keep and bare arms. How does this Number posted above work? Is it a directory?

My main concern in such a situation is that any such "uprising" will be easily put down. The technological advances the military has over what we the people, as a whole, have at our disposal is greatly disproportionate. It would be much akin to a giant crushing an ant. I am not saying that the disparity would stop those who are truly motivated, but it sure would make the sheeple turn and run away. I suppose you could hope that the line soldier would not turn against his fellow country men, but I look at the current youth who seem more and more desensitized to the world around them and I break out in a cold sweat. Some of these kids who spend all their time playing video games which, in my book and experience, have the effect of loosening your hold on reality if played at the right impressionable age could easily make the jump to following orders to destroy their neighbors. Call me paranoid if you want, but I see many in the coming generations feeling less connected to their communities and the moral norms of those communities. Nevermind their connection to their community, their connections to their own family members are tenuous. I see the moral norms on a downward curve as well. One needs look no further than their idiot box to see how far down we have gone in 20 years. Some of the junk on television that passes for entertainment would be scandalous 20 to 30 years ago. 50 years ago you might have been brought up on charges for producing some of this crap. For those of us with young children, we need to resist the urge to allow our kids to go with the flow. If you have a strong moral ethic, you are likely to pass it on. If you don't have one, by golly you had better get one because you are your child's best hope for the future because the public school system, sure as hell isn't going to teach them any thing regarding morals and natural law. Heck they won't even let a poor kid say a prayer to himself before a meal. I am completely sure that the founding fathers are cranking up the RPMs in their graves on a daily basis. I feel sorry for those who have no hope in an after life of any kind, especially as I sit and consider the future of our "civilization". For those students of history, if you ever wanted to get the feel for what transpired before the fall of the Greek and Roman empires, just open your paper and turn on the TV, it is there in High Definiton and coming to you as fast as a satellite feed can manage. Now who got me going?

I've already called my Rep - left a message w/ his secretary (who seemed to know a little bit about firearms - thats a good Republican secretary right!?) who was suprised when I mentioned the Mini 14 "Ranch Rifle." I've also got an AR15 in 7.62x39 w/ a bull barrel and an optics rail (no iron sights) - and I don't know HOW this can be considered an "assault rifle." Sniper rifle, maybe :)

Good post Woodrat, I've been concerned about this one too...

This primarily refers to pistol grip shotguns and rotary magazines.
