Protection knife against wild animals.

You know, there are many more animals in the woods besides bear, im just saying. Cougar, wolves, other people, chupacabras maybe........

It seems smart to me that if you are far far away from the nearest hospital/police station to take some precautions.....

You are right
My wife's uncle was almost stomped to death by a bull moose
He was luck that he was able to get under a log, but he was still all busted up
He barely made it to the road, where he was picked up

I was once treed by a nasty range bull on crown land during hunting season

Yup. I'm generally a lot more worried about moose (esp. this time of year) than I am about bears.

To be honest, more than once I've made a circle around bush partiers. You can hear to alcohol\dope\testosterone bellowing language and I want nothing to do with a group like that. Then later you find panties, condoms, beerboxes\cans, fast food wrappers etc. It just makes for little hell hole dumps. More than once I've thought that I'd rather deal with wild animals that are basicly neutral, than humans that seem to find joy by creating humiliation and suffering all too often. Conversely I have also met wonderful people outdoors that also enjoy being outside to persue their various interests. I guess that I like to be aware of my surroundings out there because of my own personal experiences.

I view taking a gun with me in the woods as prudent planning, why not have a gun on you? Its not like it weighs 20 pounds or really interferes with your ability to hike. On the flipside being attacked by bear, cougar, moose, other people and not having a gun will probably ruin your day

The answer is obvious.Go on & get yourself a Case Peanut for all your wild animal woes.

This knife works well against bears and demons too however you must travel to the depths of hell and then stick your arm into lava to retrieve it. Are YOU up for it?

I have been watching some outdoor, bushcraft, fishing, hunting, and some knife related videos from Japan. They are not allowed to carry guns unless they are hunting and then it has to be a long gun. They apply for a permit and if granted are required to use a shotgun for 10 years before they can upgrade to a rifle. Long story short...They have to use a knife for bear defense when gathering wild plants, fishing, camping, etc. I believe many carry pepper spray as their first line of defense and the knife if that doesn't work.

Page 12. Impressive.

Telling isn't it. The majority of us know that in the real world. #1, We will likely never or rarely even see a bear unless semi remote camping. #2. The odds of being attacked are extremely low. #3. Anything less than a powerful firearm wouldn't instantly incapacitate a bear. Well, maybe my feet and breath could..................:barf: :D Yet something primal dwells deep in our psyche warning us. Maybe it is the knowledge that it could be an extremely savage and painfull death as opposed to say walking downtown and getting smacked by a city bus. And the knowledge that one could be eaten alive is often distasteful. This is a worst case scenario\fantasy thread that touches something in us. Look at the view numbers, x6 of anything else current. I'm sure that most here take it all with a grain of salt. :) Although we know that some geographic locations DO increase ones odds of an encounter, that is real as some of us have lived there, or still do.

Much like the seat belt and life vest available to the passenger on the plane. They may save you during a crash, but many times these will not. However it is comforting to know that they are there should the unexpected happen.

It could be that such things in the news lately and the report that bear attacks have increased 300% in the last few years adds fuel to the fire too. I read just yesterday one state past a law forbidding law enforcement from shooting mountain lions in the city limits after they responded to an attack on a child and killed the cat. It appear we've grown up in the city and no longer have a clue these days.

Since it's Japan wouldn't katanas be more appropriate, at least an o-wakizashi. :D
In the absence of a large caliber handgun, pepper spray would be the best bet, imo. :)
