I'm going to be making some prototype firesteels out of bocote and was going to give some away for testing/comments. I plan on making them 1 1/2 long by 1" wide by 3/4 thick. Probably with a slight teardrop shape for grip. They will have 550 cord lanyards with several options on length and will be finished with either zipper pulls, antler or wood. First three people to express a genuine interest will get them. Also passing them on would be appreciated. Thank you. I expect to have them done in about 3 weeks.

Just got my first firesteel.

One is good, two is better :)

If you don't mind to ship in Canada. I think there are enough people for a passaround.

All right, you guys are it. I can ship to Canada, I'll see what shipping would be. Any feedback and passing them along would be great. I'm mostly doing this as a hobby. Thanks again guys. Email me with contact info please.

I would be very interested in field testing your firesteel than posting pictures and a review. Let me know if you need an additional tester.

Well, I've got enough interest for my first run. Anyone that posts I will keep in the loop. Perhaps those that get them first can pass them on afterwards to everyone else. I've got all my materials on the way, just waiting to get a new dremel so I can get started.

Exactly. Anyone with any other questions should email me. For now I just want to get some feedback and advice. No pictures yet. When I upgrade my membership I'll probably list these.

Well I got the rods the other day, still waiting on my wood to arrive. The post office has an "article too large for box" so it is either the wood or the custom Ranger i just bought. :D

I'm looking at possibly attaching a striker to the lanyard. Any advice or suggestions on what might work? I've heard of people using hacksaw blades, but this doesn't seem aesthetically pleasing.

hacksaw blades from the dollar store work great! They are really high carbon steel. Break them to about 3" long (make two out of each blade, the holes are already drilled on the ends of the blade), then sand the teeth down about 50% so they are dull, yet still visable.

Thanks. I've seen a lot of people using those. I guess if it works appearance doesn't matter.

Well I'm looking for someone with a table saw so I can rip the bocote. It looks like I'll be able to get more handles than anticipated.

Unfortunately My purchase of the Dremel tool for shaping the handles has been delayed. And it is all the fault of Bladeforums! Actually it is my fault. I bought these 2 knives recently.

I'm sure you all understand. Anyways, your getting something for free so don't fret!

Just did this to give me an idea of how big the handles should be and how to shape them. I'm going for one side flat and the other side indented for your thumb. The dremel kit I got didn't come with too many sanding attachments, so I need to take another trip to the hardware.
