Prove me wrong!

Ok so what if I have a knife from a 100-piece production run, but then I somehow manage to go out and destroy the other 99 pieces, is my knife now a custom? XD

"Benchmade" is what Bob Loveless called his knives until someone swiped the term and named a company that.

I remember mentioning in a similar thread (these threads come along every few years/months) that you can go to a Laguiole maker, online, order the blade steel, filework, Guilloché, handle material , bee etc, and have the knife produced for you.
Since these are made to a large extend by hand, so the filework will never bee 100 identical and natural materials, like olive wood and horn, will differ from one knife to the next, even if you decide to order an identically speced knife your knife will be unique.
However, these are low cost knives and do not have the boasting factor, telling everybody how incredibly expensive your knife was. :)

I think that may be riding the fine line between customization and custom but I certainly wouldn’t argue against the fact that they are custom for the exact reasons you pointed out.

And as you mentioned part of the reason I started the thread is because the word custom gets thrown around to add to the allure and cost of a knife that usually is completely unjustified.

Agreed, the use and meaning of words change all the time. That’s what this conversation is about. What do they mean or should mean.

Here’s AI’s opinion, starts of great. Then gets into the muck of what I personally feel is misuse of the term. Even AI is confused on what it really means. 😂

And then there’s this, which is what I disagree with. I don’t understand the need for a term such as semi or factory custom. If anything it’s completely unnecessary and inherently contradictory.

Our David Mary David Mary has made several "custom" knives for me 😉

Dear forum friends, thank you for dragging me into yet another custom vs production vs midtech polemical screed disguised as invitation to discussion. My opinion is that {insert words}.

Now I rest. Tomorrow me make knifes.

In the '80's dad had used Ford F150 Custom. Factory custom? Badges said so. Nothing unique about it, somebody at the fairgrounds had an identical truck. It didn't get "customized" until the late '90's, after he'd sold it to the neighbor, who installed an aftermarket grille and headlights after hitting a deer.

I agree that the term is overused, but not so often wrongly. I believe the connotation works for 1 of 1, but also as an abbreviation. Y'know, words end up with more than one definition. In other hobbies "modified" or "mod" takes the place of "customized" and its shortened version.

I'd say that if I know a feller who makes custom knives, my expectation is that he crafts each one individually. I, personally, have customized/modded several factory production knives in ways that make them 1 of 1. Sorry. Just gonna have to live with it.

I think it’s fair to say a customized knife results in it becoming a custom.
