Prybars: Who needs them?

The old classic crating hammers were lots of fun and tended to carry like a small hawk. What’s the point of prying unless you are able to hammer, pound and chop as well.

I bought a small edc pry bar and carried it everyday for over a month. Did not use it one time. Guess I just don’t do enough stuff that requires a pry bar. And even if I did… my first instinct is going to be grab a flat screwdriver that cost a few bucks.

There is an active thread in the gear sub-forum about pocket pry tools. I posted pictures of a few of mine over there. If you've got thoughts on this kind of stuff, if you carry stuff like this, or if you are just curious; head on over. (More traffic in that sub-forum wouldn't be a bad thing.)

This is true. Today I was at Bass Pro and they had the Gerber Dime on sale. I’ve been eyeing a smaller EDC multi tool and really don’t want to support Leatherman. I grabbed one for me and another for my 18 yr son who works as an automotive tech. I took two steps, turned around, and put the one for him back on the rack. He has enough tools in his car to make that Dime look like a joke.
If I may ask what is your beef with Leatherman?

I'll admit that I've used a screwdriver as one but am I the only person who would NEVER consider using any knife (regardless of its cost) for a prybar?

LOL! 😇

In answer to your question: Me, when to open a can of paint/wood stain/sealer/spar varnish. I used a small pry bar or a church key, not my knife. My knives are cutting and slicing tools, with occasional whittling/carving a pointy stick or a wedge tossed in.

I no longer have this tool as it’s completely illegal to carry. I never used it for stabbing, but it did excellent as a light prying tool. Used in place of my folder whenever a reason to pry came up. Window screen stuck, cabinet stuck, file cabinet overfilled and stuck etc.. I’m not in the habit of prying shit with a edc knife, but bigger fixed blades work well enough ( not that those situations happen often ). I did use a Benchmade Adamas for over 7 years as a prybar in place of proper tools. Roofing tile lifter, paint can opener, cement bag slasher, floor tile lifter etc.

Notice the blade shrinkage from dozens of horrible sharpening sessions on sandpaper and worn stones. Pure abuse 😂. I beat that living crap out of that knife deliberately - not sure how it survived, it did though. Liked it so much I bought a replacement. The replacement never saw use as the first one never stopped working.

Nice knowing a tool can be used to pry even if it’s only designed to cut.

If you live in Minnesota, you’d better have something that will pop open a frozen car door. Of all the knives I own, the Hultafors GK is the one I feel best about putting to this kind of use. You’d think the handiest thing would be just to carry it in the car, but then you think again and recognize the obvious futility. Fortunately, for most freezes, the bottle opener/screwdriver on a SAK is up to the task.

Propane torch?

Paint? Your road crews don't use enough salt...
Any vehicle over a couple of years old; is already a rustbucket!

Propane torch is good for doing some hash oil dabs while you're kept in during the snowstorm, you'll forget about going out into the storm anyways, just wait it out. Safer that way. I recommend propane torch as opposed to a tool you would want to use to get you out.

Bob Denman Bob Denman This is why I've been pestering GM to make the first car made from H-1 already...
