Instead of having a razor blade a small fixed blade knife seems
to me anyways seems like a much better cutting tool.

Bryan

I agree with that but then again the idea of having any kind of cutting implement in a survival tin I don't agree with. I think back ups of critical gear like blades should be full sized and more useful than what can fit in a small tin. I'm not saying a small knife can't be useful, I disagree that it's the best choice. Of course like everything if you like it and it works for you, go for it.

Edit: The fad remark is about the idea of a "tin knife." There will always be a market for small knives but the concept of a knife for an altoids tin I think is a fad. I've been known to be wrong before though.

Hi all,

shotgun, I hear what you are saying.

By chance have you ever got to use a small knife like the psk knives?

I was making knives for almost a year before I made my first one and started to use it. Now I say to myself man I wish I had made one and had one years ago lol.

That George Jasper after he got his told me he wished these little knives would have been around 25 years ago.

Anyways just wondered. Are they the best knife? No, but they really are a great addition to smal Kit and are so dang handy to use.

scsknives, lol dang cameras anyways lol.

Take care all,

Bryan

These small knives are really meant for a last ditch kit not so much as a standard back-up knife.

That might be my issue. I'm a bit of minimalist and my gear selection reflects that. I have back ups for critical gear but not a 3rd or even 4th backup. Nothing wrong with that either, just not how I do it.

Sicily02-Currently the smallest knife I own is an Izula although I did have a knife similar in size to yours as a keychain knife when I was a teen.

It seems to me that the first thing that someone would want to do with a tin knife is to craft a full length handle for the tin knife. Split a stick, wedge the knife in, wrap tightly with cord. Without any bait, that may well be the best use of fishing line... As a matter of fact, I think that if I were setting up one of these little kits, I would figure out how much line (maybe the inner strands from some 550 paracord- or high lb test fishing line) it would take to securely lash the knife to a haft. Then I would make sure that much cord made it into my kit, dedicated to that purpose.

I agree with Bryan that the PSK knife isn't really a fad. I came out with mine in April of 2006 with the intention of it being a knife to be carried in a personal survival kit. It never did. Folks that bought them ended up using it as an EDC knife and more so as a necker. I've mentioned this before but I've made over 700 of them since 2006 and still get orders for them just not as often anymore.

thinking about buying/making a small psk knife and thought some pics would be nice.

I picked this one up last year, from a member here. Can't find his card, but he is out in Arizona.

I have the little knife hanging from a D ring on my CamelBak MULE. That is my hunting pack. I find myself using the knife often.

I think one reason people like them is they are usualy moderately priced (due to their size I am sure) and it allows folks to get a custom or try a new maker on the cheap. I know that is what started me. I bought a Gossman PSK several years ago when Scott did a run. Got it and been hooked on his stuff and customs since.

Just put this kit together recently. Blade is a SAK Rucksack.

I've only posted a few times on the form, but I love to reading the posts. I've learned a lot from everyone.Do they still make and sell the book 6 ways in 12 ways out and where do you order it from? It sounds like it would be a good read.
