Public perception of people carrying knives

I don't get many comments except what it is, how much and where to buy.

Uusually the same here in SF, although in the hood no reason to cause sweatin, the stroller army is what I usually get looks from, but then it's just cause their husbands don't carry. Desperado points.

I don't carry what I consider to be "scary knives". But that is in the eyes of the beholder and how you use a knife is important. When I need to use a knife, I use it in places like you mentioned or elsewhere. I don't worry about it and I am not in the least bit self conscious using a pocket knife in public. I feel a little differently with a fixed blade as I think you need to have a reason to carry one beyond you just want to. I also do not exaggerate my movements with a knife. I retrieve it, open it, use it, and close it. Back into the pocket....

It appears most on here take the IDFC approach and I will do the same moving forward, I am certainly not doing anything illegal or waving it around haphazardly. Davek14? is right in his assumption that my old knife was a slip joint, I believe it was a Case or a Buck. Regarding my comments about California... I should have taken a lighter approach to that particular analogy. We do have a lot of people moving here from said state that seem to want the same rules and laws that they had previously but with a change of scenery. Woodcamo Nut, my wife was born in Garberville, in Northern California, and I agree that not all people from CA. are bad:thumbup:

On a side note, this new knife hobby is worse than crack! I spend quite a bit of time perusing the classifieds on here and have since bookmarked about 9 knife stores in my browser. Crack, I tell ya.

Crack indeed :)

I was at Walmart and was going to buy a new Kershaw in the clamshell package. It was locked on the shelf so you couldn't pull one off yourself. After 10 minutes of searching for an employee unsuccessfully I took it upon myself to get it so I whipped out my Delica 4 and cut the package off of the rod it was locked onto. I pull it off and out of nowhere there's an employee right behind me with a puzzled look. "Can I help you with something? " "no thanks, I'm good now" :)

Ive lived most of my life in the big bad city, and most of that time in Los Angeles. Been carrying and using pocket knives since I was a kid. I can't recall once anyone ever acting scared or alarmed in any way over my knife use. If they did, it was out of my view. In my experience, if anything, people are usually appreciative if you produces knife when it's needed.

I dont know why you feel that way, but, when I carry my spyderco dragonfly I feel safer.

Sheeple are the only explanation, just ignore them and be proud of your knives.

dang you beat me to the obvious sheeple answer. lol

i had a date sat. 12-13 just past. prior to our date she called me and ruined my freaking nap time. she said that she ran a background check on me. i was like so what i'm cool with that, i have nothing to hide. coincidently she saw something that i had told her about from my past. she also saw that i had been charged with carry my gun without a permit. she said that freaked her out, but she really meant it. she had serious anxiety issues over it all & to make matters worse she pumped herself up and ran down a path that she admitted to it not making sense.

so she didn't cancel and picked me up. while we were at the club i showed her some pictures. like a typical nosey women she starts going through my pictures. i didn't stop her nosey ass because as i said before i have nothing to hide or be ashamed of. sHE TOLD ME THAT SHE KNEW I HAD A KNIFE COLLECTION,
i was like ok ... so as she goes through my phone pics she sees my gun in it's case. she then asks is that you gun.

i said hell yeah lol. she asked do you have it on you now. i said no i don't have a permit so it's home. she then starts to run down her anxiety road again. i have never seen anything like it before in my life. Mind you before leaving i guess she forgot that she asked me if i carried or was going to carry the gun . i said no...
i said i do carry a knife everywhere though. i showed her the knife, told her small details and her anxiety raised up, but she didn't get so uptight & seemed fine.

If she don't get her shit together asap she is history. i understood her and tried ways to calm her down and reason with her. all of which she really appreciated, i know that because she gave made a compliment on how i seemed to be dealing with her...

The moral to the story is sheeple will think what they want and blow the situation out of proportion just because of their own innate fears/ignorance. iT'S NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT THAT, except try to deal with them in a reasonable manner when called for.

I've been carrying daily here for 20-ish years and have only had a couple of instances where people will ask "is that legal?" Never really noticed anyone giving me odd looks, though I'm sure it's happened, just never picked up on it. I recall having to cut the top off a yogurt tube for my son at Mc D's once....kinda hard to be subtle with the Hinderer-designed gerber torch 2 re-curve tanto half serrated I was carrying that day ;-)

That is some FUNNY shite right there! I don't know what's more funny, the fact that he wrote a song about knife addiction, or the fact that it's a very real thing based on some posts I've read on this forum.
" heaven help me please, my collection now has 1 CRKT" That was particularly funny and apropos! Would have really been funny if he posed pictures of his collection with his breakfast and, or, wallet and watch.

I live in rural Virginia, so it is expected for folks to have a knife. Most all of the men that I know have something on them. Some for trade work, others for outdoor work, but most for simple utility. At church it is not uncommon for the men to take out guns and knives at fellowship dinners or Bible studies. Just a different culture I guess.

Tell her to find a more boring individual that will be a victim with her. She will feel safer with someone with out guns or knives but the opposite is true.. I don't understand sheeple.

I'm in GA, my knife is more likely to start a conversation than a scene. Having said that, I cut out of sight if at all possible. Younger folks are scared by a knife more easily than the old timers, in my experience.

Indeed! And as someone else posted, I'm expected to have a knife on me.

Oh man, that video made my day!

But one suggestion to the creator: change "I'm epic failing......." at the end

It makes more sense that way and rhymes better. Like "if moderation is the key, then I have failed miserably"

Oh and "3 SOGs" should be "3 new ZTs":D

Great song though:thumbup:

When I started my current job most people were averse to most knives simply stating that the box cutter could do the same exact thing. Now almost 3 years later almost all of my employees carry knives and I regularly get asked what I am carrying that day. The knives I carry are not people friendly either lately it has been a microtech combat troodon.

Wow, the douchy "sheeple" monicker was used sparingly, well done Bladeforums! We're getting smarter!

I've kept my forum and real life use of "sheeple" to a minimum. Sometimes it's difficult though. "Contain the rage, Justin, contain the rage."
