Yup, call it wanderlust or whatever you like, I've just got the itch to move on. Ain't nothing wrong with Texas, but this is the longest I've ever been in one place and it's starting to grind. Feels odd not to move every so often, reckon it must be from growing up in a military family, and being career military myself.
Getting rid of dang near everything, sort of like a snake shedding it's skin. Lordy day at the stuff that accumulates over the years  . Most of us are habitual pack rats by nature, and when you step back and look at it from a purely objective standpoint, we become slaves to our possessions. You really don't need six different kinds of widget if one widget will perform the tasks that a widget is designed to do. Blasphemy, I know, to all of us "accumulators" that fancy ourselves budding collectors ;) Still, in my old life I went into places with only the gear I needed to accomplish the mission. Never was very luxurious, but if I suffered it was mostly from want, not true need. Only when you are placed in a position of having pretty much nothing that isn't essential, do you begin to realize just how little you really need in the first place.
No, I haven't been reading Thoreau, and I haven't fallen and bumped my head. I'm just fired up about the freedom that comes with simplifying things. Explain that? Okay, remember your first apartment? Didn't have crap did you? A few clothes, an old couch from a yard sale, a TV stuck on top of a milk crate "entertainment center", couple of posters on the wall for "decor", but really, come on, you didn't have crap. Were you happy? I'm betting yes. Was life simpler then? Again, I'd be willing to bet on it. Wellsir, that's what I'm talking about, not that exactly, but the essence of it, if you get me. So, when I roll out of Texas, if it don't fit in my truck it ain't mine.
That said, I'll be letting go of most bladed objects I currently own (and they do make a considerable pile  ). No time to deal with 'em right now because of my self imposed timelines, I'll just oil 'em down and pack 'em up until I get wherever I'm headed. Then, some will go to Steve for Ram, and the rest will be for sale over in the exchange, or maybe I'll sell 'em at a swap meet or something. Don't know, really don't care, so long as I don't have to lug 'em around anymore. Serious business guys, I've hit a point where I really don't feel a need to own more than I need. I'd rather spend my time and money on living a good life than owning alot of neat stuff. Crazy, but cool in it's own simple minded way. A bit daunting at first, but definitely not boring. Y'all wish me luck.

Sarge

p.s.: this whole bippedy bop was by way of letting y'all know I may be going off the net soon, and will most likely resurface sporadically at best

Vaya con dios. (sp)

I,m sure there are a ton of us more sedentary fellows who would jump at the chance to relieve you of your bladed burden. Maybe even hold on to a couple for you if you change your mind.

Edited to add that you made a real change in my outlook while I was here.
This may sound paradoxical and oxymoronic.
I have learned to call these little lessons paradoxymoronics.
You reinforced in me the belief that life doesn,t have to be complex to be good.(Like my explanations)
At the same time I learned that simple things could uncomplicate complex tasks.(like your explanations)

your PC fits in the truck. I've learned a lot from your posts over the last few years. It would be a shame to see you leave the Cantina.

I know exactly what you're saying...I've recently thought to myself that I was much happier just after college, not much in the way of worldly possesions but it seemed I was overall happier on a daily basis.

Good luck.

If you come through Ohio...you're welcome to stop by my place.

Near Wright-Patt AFB for any shopping/medical needs...prime watering holes, a comfy rack and decent meals.

Just so you know...

I know that feeling so well, Sarge. AF Brat and a AF hitch will do it to you.
About every 2nd or 3rd spring, I start gettin' antsy, by June I am a lil wierd, spending too much time remembering where I've been, and how long I have been where I am. I have been missing the Southwest again, lately, hmmmm.

Good luck, and Fly Safe, wherever you land.

Many thanks to all for the understanding and support. I ain't gone yet, but I am going, and you can bet once I do I'll stick poke my nose back in from time to time, when and where I can. Funny old thing about horizons, look at 'em long enough and they draw you toward 'em. That may be a gross oversimplification, but truth is seldom as complicated as we make it out to be. :)

As Frank said, please don't leave us all together. You've become a friend, and friends are too few. But I honor and applaud your spirit and way of thinking. What freedom it gives you.
You've given us some great lessons. Personally, some of them have sunk in, and some might take hold in the future.:o

Good luck on your journey! I hope you find the people and places that make you happy. If you pass through NC and want a place to stay for a bit, there's an empty bedroom for you here.

Steve

Sarge,

Will miss your pics and insight. I was so happy when you came back here last time.

Don't know if you have a destination in mind, but WV has cheap land, low property taxes and lots of woods. Let me know and I might be able to steer you to some land for sale. Most is out in the boonies though.

Hey Sarge,

I don't know you, but have fun :)
Hope to hear from you soon after you leave.
Love to read what all you experienced guys have to say.

Were you happy? I'm betting yes.

You'd lose. I'm much happier now...but I understand your point, Sarge.

Anything can be a tool or a trap. Some of us have made a virtue of exploring the next hill. It's quite okay to set down roots, too.

Best wishes, wherever the wind blows you. You'll always have a cup of something cold or hot, as fits the season, and a plate of the best I have in my camp, whenever you drop by.

Man, I'm in college - still in dorms even. My room is literally the smallest room at my school, so not too much space for junk. Between school stuff and outdoor stuff, I just don't have much more room! And yeah, you bet I'm happy. Good post Sarge, and I'm glad you've figured out what you want to be doing. Moreover, I'm glad you're doing it. Seems a lot of people know what they want to do and are really able to do it, but they just lack the initiative to take that last plunge. Good luck, my friend.

Chris

Best of luck, Sarge. Please remember to stop in when you can.

If your nose leads you to the northwest, come by for a visit.

"60 years ago many of us dug a hole in the backyard and S*** in it:barf: , most changes are GOOD"
Sarge have a safe trip, take your knife making stuff and you will never starve.

Sarge, if you're ever in Central Cal., there's a place for your bedroll. Best of luck, and thanks for everything.

BTW Sarge...I've Brothers overseas that would welcome you too.

Just in case...seems your compass is filled with opportunities.
