Pulling up stakes and breaking camp

My brother in law lives in the hill country just west of Austin and would never leave. It is really great out there. The only problem is the invasion of the city - it just keeps growing.

I like Austin, and could see living down there. I have no idea about Kileen.

Get rid of the puter and get a laptop, keep the little TV and get satellite TV & internet and a motor home and you can visit all of us and still keep in touch. Heck with wifi and a good radio shack antenna and truck stop internet you could do it without satellite cable & TV.

Trimming the fat and setting out on the road in your gypsy caravan (OK, "truck") sounds like one hell of a good time! :D Good luck to you, and keep in touch. You really should check out the PNW. I swear it doesn't rain ALL the time. :)

Talked to my daughter on the phone last night. When I told her I'm pulling up stakes and first stop is Florida, for an extended visit with the folks, and to catch up on some of the time I wish I could have spent with her, the joy in her voice was palpable, nearly made my heart melt.
I'm on the right track folks. When I think of all the sacrifices my family made supporting me throughout my military career, I know it's time to spend some time with them, simply being there and loving them. My mother, God bless her, at one point had three sons in combat zones all at the same time. I've got one kid, and I worry about her enough as it is. Imagine what it must have been like for mom, sleepless nights, days of worry. Moms might seem frail and gentle, but they're tough as nails where it counts, and you can bet mine's special. Yessir, I owe my family, and I'm looking forward to spending more time with them, showing them the same love and support they've always shown me.
Does that mean I'm going to settle down in Florida? Don't know, but I've sure unpacked my rucksack in far worse places. Florida and family first, then we'll see. ;) :D

Years of tactical experience are holding me in good stead right now. Otherwise, I don't really think I could do what I'm doing regarding lightening my load. How to pack for a mission? Start with a pile of everything you'd like to have along. Now whittle that pile down to what you think you might need. Now whittle that pile down to only the things you know you'll need. You may now start packing. Even after all that, you'll most likely find you packed too much stuff. True as a sunrise, and it never fails. :p ;)

I'm having a blast getting rid of stuff and giving stuff away, and folks are coming from all over to "pick the bones", so to speak. Bless 'em, they don't know the service they're rendering me. With my load sufficiently lightened, I'll be totally mobile. Able to go anywhere I want, anytime I want, stay as long as I want, and leave when I'm ready. Call it the old sarge's mid-life crisis, but Lordy what freedom. :D Oh, I'll settle down eventually, but it'll be great to be totally free to range around a bit while I'm deciding where.

You guys give me strength with your understanding and encouragement. Don't worry about me none, I'm not cracking up. If anything, I'm seeing things more clearly than I have for some time. My big fancy bed is hauled off and gone, but the GI cot I slept on last night slept as good as that bed ever did. It'll do for a spell I reckon. :D

Sarge, when do you set off for the Sunshine State?

Eric

Don't know for sure yet Eric, got to deal with the house, utilities, changing address, and all that bother that goes with moving. Right now I'm just winging it and following the philosophy of Lao Tzu; "A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving" (but you can bet I'll be home for Christmas) :D

what!...are you still here!?

just kiddin'!

Well, if you are gonna move on in the wintertime I guess FL is the place to go.:D

Sounds like it's a good thing for you. Have fun and keep in touch when you can.

Sarge,
Been away from the computer and just ran across this thread. Hope you log on one more time before you hit the road, so I can tell you what a privilege it's been to know you and learn from you. Fare well in your travels, friend. When you get to a safe stopping place, hoist a Guinness to all those who wish you well, and count me as one of them.

Good for you. Family is so important. I love every minute with Hannah. Let us know if we can help?

woo! an adventure!

i have been eliminating things from my life. things i thought i'd want later, and realizing i was wrong - they go. things i was hoping i'd need, or would want to share later down the road - nobody is going to be interested in this old man's crap - they go. more and more they go, the remaining things almost become more precious, yet also easy to go.

mostly, the hard part will be many books. books that i know i will read again, and use for reference... precious the books.

i know more than a few people that have pulled up stakes lately. a lot of them got their stuff down to a cubic yard or so of "stuff", maybe two pallets, shrinkwrapped it, and put it in storage in someone's basement or attic, and took off. they'll be back. their stuff waits. 1 person, i know did this years ago, and finally said "give it away, keep it, i don't want it". lifeline severed. it's hard to let go of all of it.

more trash to to trash

Dang I'm tired, but it's a good tired, the kind that makes a feller sleep sound at night. Ain't a stick of furniture in my house right now, except for my folding cot, an old folding field table that my computer's perched on, and a folding chair I kept from my last deployment. That stuff will pack small, and pop right in the old truck, ready to roll out. Still got a lot of work to do, but starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and it's glow gets brighter as I go. :D

In case I don't get the chance to do so tomorrow, I want to wish all of y'all a very happy Thanksgiving. I've got a heck of a lot to be thankful for, not least of which is all my friends here. You guys, and gals, rock. :D
