Thankyou sir; it is a shame I can buy Russian ammo by the pallet load, but I can't buy a knife like that without extraordinary measures. :(

I have been looking at Kizlyar knives and I like them.I'm shure that any Russian knife company would jump at the chance to do custom work for the Russian president. That would be a huge selling point "our knives are carried by heads of state".

A small salute to the political side of things...

First off, companies covet the chance to do work for a head of state. Head to England, look in some of the older shop windows, and you'll see Royal Warrants for work done for royalty long since dead. It's a point of honor, regardless of the politics involved.

Second, as regarding the Russians. I would personally love to see a spirit of cooperation between the Russians and the US. So much can be learned, with two great nations working together. It's happened before.

As for the knives shown. These are some beautiful pieces of work. I'd love to carry any of them, and would in a second if the cost weren't so prohibitive.

Dear Coguar Allen.

Please excuse me, I do not want to continue discussion (nothing to discuss here), but keeping this part unedited is important for me, so please excuse me. As you see I am not continuing discussion just like to keep it in original form.

Thanks, Vassili

I notice that this is called "Damascus Steel" not "Damascus blade".

Is it Bulat?

I know that there are some Bulat school in St.Petersburg. And what kind of price for this knives? Are they (Northern Crown) available outside Russia - like in Germany or in WorldKnives here in US?

Thanks, Vassili.

hi vassili,, yes the st petersburg knives are to be had in europe.. as with the dagestan art knvies, although the st petersburg art knvies are weill gigher in thier quality,, the price is higher too, but they are more to european tastes,, rather than,, "dagestani tastes " :D...

the st petersburg department has been around from some years, but recently they changed their name and mark so as nto to confuse with the dagsetani made art knives...

yes kizlyar in st petersburg has been suppliing knives and swords to the kremlin and large firms like lukoil and such for some time...
the blades are normaly folded steel... not bulat, but bulat can be ordered and is not uncommon, but price depends on if it is from an old blade or if it is from newly made material..
the knife that putin has i think is the nromal folded steel not bulat.. but bulat knives of this model have been made not infrequently,

jenni in germany has some knives from nrod crown,, but this specific model i think not, i recall ther ewas several of these in prague..
but that was some time ago.. email here on (info@kizlyar.de)
she has bulat knives made in the dagestan factory,, including a bulat folding knife.... \

i think in the u.s. there is only dagestani made art knives,

if you wanted this knife emailjenni and she will look for you,, its the best bet,,,
the price realy varies,, how many jewls on the hilt and pommel, what material, silver,, golde plated, bronze with silver plate.. hand engraving on the silver... ivory grip ,bulat blade.. gold inlay on the blade... ., australian crocodile skin sheath,,, ect ect ect...
something from 1000$ -3000$ i seem to recall..

Ultraman belives a Russian President would have a Russian knife. I respectfully disagree. His real profession is KGB agent made good. Therefore he might know his tools. The new Russia is to busy with its growing economy for hand made products so I think the President found that beauity in Scandinavia.

You might be right, I really don't know. In fact, I suspected at first that it was scandinavian because I have no knowledge of what Russian (or former satellite) knives would look like, and the end cap and sheath looked like scandis I've seen before. One thing I can say about Russian knives from what I've seen posted here is that they look finely crafted.

I think it is a skandi for a different reason. Putin has to travel a lot and go through some extensive security procedures so I doubt that carry a suitcase full of russian knives in case he goes fishing or hunting. I would guess he got his knife from the same guy who lent him his fishing rod. Probably some rich guy with influence who would have grabbed the nicest knife he could find that would work for fishing. A Bruseletto is the kind of nice production knife you would expect to find in some rich guys outdoor gear.

the knife you have is a common style of hunting knife made in rusisa during the 19th centuary, ushaly with a short sword also.. given to hunting officials and such .
jenni has posteda picture of the kizlyar version.. which is nice, alsthough ill say that the best reproduction of them ive seen was by ruskie palaty, .. although big price...
i understand this style of knife is coming into russia from germany ,, and they originate from the hunting knvie sof southern europe which were coming originaly from plug bayonets..

:rolleyes::rolleyes: ////
i ...was working in kizlyar when they are selling the knives ot the kremlin gift agency.... ... maybe 20 kaban,,, some as the knife samsonov and jenni posted and some others... about 20 as the knife i have posted before .. some were given to fcentral asian politicians politicians,, now to some chinese monks,, and seems putin kept one for himself..
the st petersbrug branch of kizlyar now supplies bot of the bladed gifts to the russian heads of state and such,, other firms in zlatoust oor tula still dominate the area of military presentation knives and dress knives.. as it is their traditional area............

the knife is not from scandinavia..

i am seeing these knives before they were sent,, the sheath is different, orginaly prior to this it was of black leather and with a loose hanger more like a scandi sheath.. and being wet formed..
must have been october last year or so , i recall these were purchased or some time abouts......

It is a replica of a Samsonov hunting knife made for Nicholas II. I'm told that Nicholas liked this design and had a lot of them made and gave them as gifts to friends etc.

The beautiful Damascus steel is also handmade in Russia. They have some excellent metalurgical people there; not surprising since they have successful military and aerospace industries.

there are some people in Russia that insist that Samsonov used english made steel for his knives. mostly from train suspention parts

What kind of sick reasoning is this? Putin as former agent knows his tools of "killing/combat" so he buys them from Scandinavias (Swedes) which haven't been in combat or experienced war, killing in some 300 years...interesting...and this guy apparently thinks there is still centraly organised production in Russia... so knifemakers (by the orders from the central comite) are now making nails? screws, nuts and bolts?,or perhaps even cars :D because Russia's economy is "booming" and there is no time to produce knives...:barf:
