Putting to rest BM Axis AFCK rumors...

Perhaps if the demand is there (i.e. emailing BM in mass quantity :)), they would consider BC1 over the BT2. What do ya think? You've gotta understand something about BM and their use of coatings on steels like M2 and D2... They do it because you, me, and everyone else here who'll be buying a few of these still only represent a small percentage of the total of purchasers. The "average" and the dreaded "sub-average" knife buyer is NOT going to know how to take care of their steel, plain and simple.

I have no experience with BC coatings, but it's got so many good reviews, I'd be willing to give it a go.

I'm not sure I buy the average-user argument here, Prof. I bought it when Benchmade came out with M2 blades, which rust a lot more readily. But D2 really isn't that bad compared with ATS-34, say. And there are numerous other companies that have uncoated D2 blades out. Am I to understand Benchmade is now more conservative than Kabar???

Really, although I dislike the BT2, it's not a total disaster. I'll just have to sand it off myself, which could be a fun project. I know a few people on the forums have done this already -- how difficult is it to sand off BT2 and leave a reasonably nice finish?

My D2 KA Bar folder in D2 has proven somewhat suseptable to rust, more so than ATS-34/154CM.

The blade area where the thumb disc is located in particular gets rust fingerprints, even with Tuf Cloth.:(

Ahhh... BT2 isn't a problem to remove. Scotchbrite works great, especially the maroon type. Green will work too, but takes too long. If I had it to do over on my Nimravus Cub, I'd probably go maroon for most of it, then get the last bit off with the green.

If they are determined to coat it, I don't see why the don't just go ahead and do it the right way and use BC. 'Course, it appears that Benchmade absolutely MUST screw up everything they do in some form or fashion. So close, yet so far. In any case, though, I'll be getting one as soon as I can. And I'll probably just go ahead and leave it black, since it really isn't going to hurt anything. Once it starts looking sh***y, as it invariably will, THEN I'll take the scotchbrite to it. It does look awesome, though. I like the new 551 as well. Are they out yet, anyone know?

I'm so fricking confused. One minute they are doing the axis afck, the next minute they are not. So is this honest to god happening or going to happen? :) I want one really bad, but this has just been one big guessing game for a while now :) lol

However that D2 is a huge incentive to buy one, D2 absolutely kicks a**.

Rockspyder, you hit the nail fair and square on the head! They do seem to mess up many designs in one way or another. Is it that we expect too much or that some one dumb in BM R&D is trying to scupper the process? Very strange.

On the D2/M2 issue and coatings. M2 with BT2 or BC1 I can live with. However, D2 has at least some rust resistance and if that is listed as a benefit on the website, why cover it in BT2? Stupid!

Give us M2 with BC1 or D2 satin and BC1. Heck charge a little extra for the option! Or not... After all a satin blade must be cheaper. Are they worried about users returning D2 knives covered with rust? Somehow I doubt the 'average' thicko user otherwisw happy with 420J2 at $20 a shot will part with $170 for any knife even if it does cook and clean as well! . This is a knife for serious users like Formites who understand that stain-less means just that!

BM need to start treating us like adults...

Another topic, the use of Scotchbrite pads, how good a 'polish' do you get and how noticable is the scratch pattern? Can you get a finish that does not show a load of scratches down the length of the blade? I removed the GB Finish of a Gerber BMF and using steel wool, 1200 grit wet and dry paper, gun polish and a chrome polish it looks quite good to me. However I am still not happy with the fine but noticable running scratches down the length of the blade. Secondly how long would it take to remove the BT2 coating from a full sized Nimravious using these pads and what would the finished job look like? Can anyone post up a pic of a knife done with Scotchbrite pads for me? Thank you.

Dark Nemesis,

It has already started my friend! They are being prototyped, and the pre-pro run is coming within days...

Professor.

BC would be better!

the 410 stainless steel linners will be stronger than the Ti ones since steel is stronger per volume that Ti, but it is still going to be flexy (the 803 has 410 and it still is) the best way to eleminate the flex is to have thicker G10 (look at spyderco) also a longer Al back spacer couldnt help.

I am considering buying one then cutting out thinker G10 for the handles, this would also recess the axis lock making accidental releace more difficult, and the whole thing would be stiffer, i also want an Al back spacer, all would be reversable mods so i am rather tempted to try.

Lizard King, all that time effort and expense? Just get a Sebenza!;)

Seriously though I hope the handles are less...flexy than the 800AFCK.

I think the Spyderco stuff is exellent and the recessed liner lock removes the need for liners at all. At the same time being stronger, lighter and more rigid. Its a crying shame IMHO that Spyderco did not get the Axis lock.

I used to have a picture of my Cub that I removed the BT2, but since Photopoint went pay-per-use, I can't post it. But, I do have the pictures on my computer, and can mail one to you if you want. If you use solely scotchbrite, I would estimate probably 1.5 hours to do it right, at least. That being maroon for the bulk, then green for the final process. However, since I didn't have that amount of patience and used sandpaper for almost all, I can't tell you how much the final scratches will be noticeable. I would guess that finishing up the blade to a polish after properly scotchbriting it would at least double the time. Not a small investment. My Cub was/is a total user, so the scratches don't bother me. In fact, I don't think I ever bothered to even try to minimize them or polish the blade at all.
