Queen 2015

Does anyone have any experience with the Kentucky Shiner? I really like the pattern and was wondering if it had a nice strong pull.

Only to the point that I modified a fellow members knife. He has the Shiner Pint and it is a strong pull. But the pull is strong for two reasons.
1. the backspring is sufficiently strong. Not a nail breaker mind you. Probably in the 7-8 range.
2. I find on many Queen blades, the tang is either ground uneven or the plating of the blade is quite thick and causes it to be very tight in an uneven way between the liners.

I re-profiled the blade shape on his to be more narrow. Almost like a Tribal or Zulu spear and then reshaped the handle to go along with the blade profile. He then sent the knife off to Tom Krein for a nice grind.

Voila, and now it's perfect. I agree with Bob though on his two points.

Thanks guys! That's a real looker Tim, the subtle trimming Bob did really completes the knife. I'll bet she slices like a demon now.

I'm always hesistant to try Queen but I've cooled off on carbon steel and I'm in the market for a tough single blade slippy. I really like the unusual lines on this pattern. Are there any other, similar knives that I'm missing out on?

Haha yeah Bob gave this one a major workout and trim down. Indeed it does slice amazing. I have to say with the stock Kentucky Shiner it's a very ergonomic knife. The wormgroove bone is quite nice and the handle lends itself to feeling very comfortable when cutting. Just a touch heavy. CSC makes a single blade trapper in steel equivalent to 154cm/ats-34/14-4 CrMo "Canal Street Half Moon Coppersmith Trapper Ka-Bar Root Beer Bone." and their fit and finish is great. (sorry for the diversion away from Queen)

Good idea on the coppersmith! I forgot about how I drooled over those awhile back but I am easily distracted. I praise CSC's lockbacks often and loudly but find their slippy's just not snappy enough for my taste. I think I might try the Shiner on for size, it's a very unusual and attractive knife. I'll report back here if I get one.

Well, nobody responded to my post so I assume nobody has tried them?

Just saw this. I have 2 barlows coming. ones a work horse in delrin i believe, and the others the 69 in stag. This will be my 5th and 6th queen traditional for the year. all the others were purchases on the fleabay so i cant properly gauge the release dates and i guess their catalog's confusing cause as I see it, cant even find the barlow on the work horse section. My barlows are the clip versions and im very eager to compare them to my gecs that are also on the way. finally decided to try some barehead traditionals, with some nudging from more experienced members, ahem cough, 2dead cough bigbiscuit :D

also, any one notice something about the amber stag honey starting to smell? i bought a used one on the bay thats been my daily carry and its starting to smell funky...

one of my queen barlows came in,

weird grind? polishing? finishing?

all the queens together, minus the daily user stag honey in the edc box
