Queen Dan Burke small barlow

It is a shame that you weren't happy with the original color but I really liked it. Mine ended up being beautiful at first but I had to send it in for some issues I was having with it. The one they sent back was equally beautiful. With the exception of a few days my DB barlow has been my EDC for a few months now. I love that knife. Hoopster I forgot to add, Great job on those scales.

Thanks, mine had some issues as well but I just decided to deal with them myself. The main blade hits the back spring if you let it close from the half stop causing a ding or rolled spot on the edge. I tried filing a little of the interior of the back spring and it may have helped some. Over time after the edge has been sharpened enough I figure it will become less and less of an issue if it even still is.
I've basically come to accept that very few knives are going to come perfect. I've definitely made this one mine.

Whacking the back spring seems to happen with Queen made knives. I have to Sodbusters with the same problem... both of them by Queen. One stopped leaving the rolled edge after a session on my Edge Pro.

In some ways, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. :D I really think it will be alright after some use and the next major sharpening. I put in hours to get the edge like it is now. Originally I thought a chip had developed somehow until I realized what was happening. With all the minor issues I have with this knife it's still growing on me for some reason. It's pros seem to outweigh the cons.

Dan gave me the proto he received from queen and i had been halling it around. The knife was kind of special to me because Dan has given it to me. Well I lost it Almost three months ago while hunting. I tried to forget about it and ordered one from a web dealer. While i was back hunting at the ranch i saw my brother working a deer over with a burke barlow. I was questioning were he had got it and he told me he had found it under a tree stand in the sand. Well he gave it back and i will be donating the one i bought to him. We all came out.

Not only with Queen-made. I have a GEC #89 Gambler that had exactly the same problem (fixed by a session on my Edge Pro :)).

Edited to keep this on-topic: after reading this thread, I'm now waiting for my Queen Dan Burke small Barlow to arrive in the mail :)

Boy has this knife made quite an impact on quite a few people. I'm just sayin'...

To have one is to love it. This particular knife really hit a surprising sweet spot with me. You almost couldn't get more traditional with its design. For me, it reminds me of the literally millions of workmen that made their living with this knife in their pocket.

The design still holds up today, too. It built heavy enough for decades of work, great steel in those blades, and it's a pretty little rascal, too.

All that, and at its price, how could you not like this one? :)

Wow, it would have been a shame to lose that one. I like happy endings.

I've got one on order.
From the look of it, it is pretty much what I imagine a fine traditional folder to be, and modern looking to boot.
Excellent blade shapes.
"Timeless," comes to mind.

Now that I'm done complaining about mine's initial bone color, I'd like to post a few thoughts after using it some.
Pros:
-While the blades came dull, the rough ground shape of them, especially the tip of the main blade is very nice
-I just love the wharncliffe secondary blade. Very useful.
-Love the half stops and the springs are pretty stout, I'd rather have them that way than too weak.
-D2 steel seems to be a cut above more commonly used steels in this price range for slip joints.
-Saw cut bone and color are somewhat unique when it comes to barlows.
-Sturdy knife overall.
-Great EDC size.

Cons:
-This is probably just an issue inherent with all barlows but the blade tangs stick up enough when closed that I imagine it will wear pockets faster. I sanded the corners down just a bit to keep from cutting things up in my pockets to bad.
-Mine was not the best fit and finish. (main blade edge contacts the back spring, wharncliffe blade is curved to name a couple of my gripes). I really expected better F&F for over $80 but in some ways it makes it easier for me to use the knife instead of worrying about keeping it pristine.

All in all I'm still quite happy I picked this one up.

There certainly are some quirks with this knife but for some reason it has a "soul" that just makes me want to use it. I too have sanded the sharp tang a little and reprofiled the blades. I have made it mine for sure with the modifications but it has made it a user that and not a "collectable". I have always tried to keep knives that I am not afraid to use.... the Queen Barlow is a joy to use.

Just got this last week, had a chance to snap a few photos.
This knife goes a long way toward scratching a few various itches from which I have been suffering lately regarding collecting traditional folders.
It is also surprisingly affordable for such a nice knife.

The box had a post-it covering the knife when I opened it that reads "Rat nibbled pins." That was a first for me.

What a great little knife for my collection, it is everything that I hoped it would be.
The amber color and cut of the bone scales are very distinctive and each side has great, unique detail.
Wow.

I think everyone who likes traditional folding knives would appreciate owning one of these.
To me it satisfies the requirements for being a traditional folder, while at the same time sporting modern lines.
It is a pretty substantial knife in the hand, lock up is rock solid.

The back corner of the blade (the corner near the tang, don't know what it is called) is very sharp on both blades.
I don't really want to file them, they just lock up so clean when the blades are fully opened, and they look great.
I don't think it will be much of an issue, the sharp edges might eventually wear a hole in my pants pocket, but I don't care.
It is a very elegant piece.

That is funny!!

I got a batch of these in that got past QA with a cosmetic issue. Since they can't really buff the pins down without taking the "rough cut" pattern off the bone, they must use some other tool. Someone that was relatively new with that tool, which I expect was something like a dremel; was making a mess on about 15 of the versions I got in an order. You could see where the wheel was coming off the pin and taking little bites out of the bone around all the pins. Since I couldn't send them to customers I sent them back to the factory with a note in each one with exact issues that needed correction. Thus most of them had a note that said "Rat nibbled pins" because I had told them on the phone that it looked like they had rabid rats nibbling their pins flush.

Thus, that is my note and it was not taken out after they corrected the issue and re-sent the knife out.

I don't think the issue was "corrected, " the knife does have what appears to be some slight dremel marks where the tool apparently slipped off the pins and touched the bone.
I'm happy with the factory "rat nibbles," which to me , gives the knife some human character, and the handle is so nicely colored that there is no way I'm sending it back.
I'm keeping your note though, with the box.
Thanks a lot for clearing up the mystery!
I really like this knife.

I missed this exchange until today.
All's well that ends well, and accidents do happen, but it looks to me like Queen got back some knives from a dealer that had issues and they never even opened the boxes before sending them back out.
Maybe that is the only one that got through, but please forgive me if I doubt it.

Like many of you I really enjoy this knife. It so happens that the bone on my knife is much darker than appears in your photos. I just tell myself it looks "richer." But I may order another to try and get a lighter, truer amber look.

As to the sharp edges at the blade ends, I may follow some of your suggestions about doing a bit of file work. However it is not much of an issue as I carry it in a pocket sheath which works well for me.

The D2 steel, I think, offers a superior performance level. This little knife has soul.

I don't think we know enough to make assumptions. They may have been bought as cosmetic seconds or looked at and determined that I was just too picky (I am, but am in good company) ;)
Wish I had a 100 more of them!
