Quest to buy display case

Offer to buy the whole lot. knives and all.... How bad do you want it?

I've got one I'm trying to figure out how to install knives into - some of the hardware is missing, apparently.

My friend recently gave me a cabinet just like this (without the knives).

It has the same attachment hardware shown in this photo of a similar case:

Does anyone know how the knives were attached?

How many little boys dug their nails into the case trying to get a better purchase so as to get a better look at what might someday be their first knife...

I'm to far south to be of help. I agree about the patina if someone eventually gets it. But, I would have to put slide out drawers in the front to hold knives and paint and distress the new wood to look like the old. Good Luck. I have tried to buy some Buck cases in Ark., Tx and Okla. in little towns and they look you in the face and know instantly you know something they don't and 'No deal". 300

About ten years ago I was in the same place. He had a few vintage spydercos, e.g. first run Jot, some buck and I don't recall what else. To break the ice for a lower price on a Spyderco, I told him the knife case was collectible, he was a little suprised. He did not drop his price on the knife. He's a smart business man, his knives carried a premium price and he could wait to sell at his price...it is a college town.

I get in Lawerence about once a year. In the last few years he has been slowing down and not keeping up his inventory of knives and a lot of other stuff. Keep at it with a fair price, you may get it yet. I buy paracord there.

So you know how cool this case is!!!!! It's neat that you've seen it in person too.

If I were to get the case I wouldn't touch the patina one bit. I would put glass back where it's missing on the right side, fill it with knives and try to do something with the front lower area where I believe there used to be two doors.

The whole shebang offer is a good idea.
OR say you'll buy a couple of his PLANO tackle boxes to store the knives.
Your genuine interest will not go unnoticed by the OC (old codger) but my money is on him being a wily old fox.
Whats the bet he's now done the research and worked out what he could get for it and theres was another fella in here just after you left made me an off er of (insert outrageous amount)dollars.
You need to strike like a viper who's just been struck by lightning.
Get back with some crisp new bills and wave them under his nose. Whilst hes absorbing the delicious aroma of cash -give him the "my wife doesn't want me to buy it spiel" garnished with a liberal soupcon of "She just spent XXhundred bucks in that clothes shop down the street. She must have bought the whole store, hahaha."

Good luck you can only float the bait-the croc will either take it or it'll sink.

OR better still if you have time -see if his wife helps in the store and adjust your strategy thusly.

Meako, it sounds like you might be the king of wheeling and dealing! I've been using the approach of letting the idea simmer in his mind for a while.

I stopped in this morning but the codger wasn't in yet. Greg, the beer making supply guy said he doubted I could get the case, it's been in the family for over 100 years!

I asked Greg if there were any more old display cases around that might be available. He took me to the basement because he thought there might be one down there somewhere. Now, this basement remember, is under a hardware store that's been in business in this same location for about 120 years. There was so much cool stuff down there! Including a counter top display case that might make a decent consolation prize if the target case is a no-go. We'll see how that goes later.

Mark - If it were me, I would go in and buy a tape measure from the dude, measure the display case and make a sketch and take a bunch of pictures of it. Go home and build one.......but....that's just me. :)

I doubt if Ive ever made money on any deal I' ve ever done.
I sharpen some knives occasionally for a nice restaurant in Wollongong near the fire station. She offered me money but I knocked it back for a coffee and a bit of brekky for me and one my colleagues the other day.

UPDATE - - -

Here's my new buddy "Ern" current owner of Ernst & Son Hardware store. He's 81 years young and loving life (can you see those green backs in his left hand?) Yes Ern has eyes, I caught him sleeping for just a second! (Visions of Dollar signs dancing in his head?)

Here's Ern's grandfather selling a flashlight to a young fella. This youngster was the sixth generation in his family to buy from Ernst & Son. You can see part of the quested for knife case in the photo.

No...the greenbacks didn't purchase the Shuredge case! The Shuredge case is staying right where it belongs for now, in the wild.

However, we did scour the basement of this fantastic place and found a consolation prize. Ern was able to let go of this old display case, it's probably over 100 years old. I'll clean it up and see if I can find a use for it.

This was a great experience for me, but I think my Wife and Daughter thought I was a little crazy. Ern's a fun guy as is Greg who is one of the employees of the store. Greg is in charge of the beer making supplies that seem to be a big part of the current sales at the store, this is a college town after all! Greg promises to take us on an "under belly jazz tour" of Kansas city next time we're in town, sounds like fun!

I can't wait for my next visit to Lawrence, you should stop in if you get the chance.

That's certainly a decent consolation purchase, can't wait to see what you fill it with. Now that you have a rapport with this fella, that may grease the rails for the other case!

Mom and Pop stores are all but extinct, don't feel bad leaving this one (and all it accoutrements) live on for awhile longer.

I love that they have that old black and white photo. It, along with the case, is priceless as a family heirloom imo.

Sounds like a great experience and one Ern and his folks will share for years.

Mark, I like the consolation case. Perhaps you could make a stepped tier rack that is on drawer slides. That way you could slide it out the rear and the stepped tier insert would display the knives very nicely.

Glad you came away with something, very cool, old case. Thanks for the very entertaining thread.

I agree find old matching wood or make it old (google) and make stair steps on drawer slides that don't show. Then you have storage behind.

But, your in the loop. Next time in take a sticky note with your name, address, email, phone # and see if they will let you tape it inside a door on the back, should they ever decide to sell it.

That's a great idea Mr. 300!! Thanks. I'm about a nine hour drive away from there but I might just send my Daughter over there to do that.

sorry I missed this thread before now - I work in Topeka and would have jumped at the chance to duck over to Lawrence for a meet and greet.
Mad Greek has good food, as does India Palace and of course - the Freestate Brewery. All just a few blocks from the hardware store.

That would have been a fun meet and greet. We ate (and drank) at Free State twice while we were there. That's some mighty fine beer they're brewing up in there! Also had a po' boy just down the street (Yum!). I'm surprised my future Son-in-law didn't have us eating at the Mad Greek considering he did a study abroad last year in Greece, next time I suppose. And, we were in Topeka at Brown-vs-Board while my Daughter had a meeting there.
I'll look you up next time we're there.

Plus....in Kansas City.......BBQ!!!! :D
