question about international shipping

Shipping overseas really, really isn't that hard. At all.

There's a reason there are tracking/insurance options, packages occasionally go missing in the system. If you don't want to take the risk, then pay for it. If you do take the risk, don't whine when the package goes missing.

I agree with Neil that you're lucky you got any money back at all.

I paid for the shipment

Actually it's crazy you have to pay extra charges to have your product delivered.
The only job of postal offices is to deliver and they should be taken the responsability.
It's their core busines.

I have to agree with what has been said here.In this situation I don't think Ed owed you anything because your the one that insisted on shipping with low value, and slower shipping to save money. When the item is lost you expect the seller to pay out of his pocket.N0, I think you need to take responsibility for this loss yourself.

However; in your defense,if Ed agreed to partially refund your money as you claim, then he should live up to the promise he made, even though he didn't have to agree to it originally.

I never asked for a cheap way of shipping. I just asked for a low value, that's right, because of the customs taxes.
I bought and sold many knives for months. I always did the maximum for the buyers when he asked me to prevent customs trouble, with a maximum security. I sold knives to usa, even to thailand without problems.
if I had one of my knives lost in the mail, I would refund the buyer partially or totally fastly after having talk to him.

Not argue with you here.As I read Neil's post,it seems like this has happend in the past, except in his case you did wind up getting your knife. You could have spent $15.00 more to have the knife fast and secure, but opted for cheaper less reliable way. Then you post about it on bladeforums. Here we are again with similar situation.I think you are asking alot from sellers here in the USA to lie and fraudulantly declare a false/low value on the customs declaration form to save you money, then when item is lost, you want the seller to pay for the loss. Now if the seller can't declare the proper value,he cannot properly insure the parcel to correct value. These costs to protect the shipment are usually paid by the buyer, unless seller agree's to covers costs. You want to save money in every aspect of the deal, but the seller is supposed to loss his money to do you a favor meeting your shipping requests. This is great example of why I rarely buy, sell, trade overseas.
