Question about Lightsaber !

Remember guys - the best lightsabers are the ones custom made by a true Jedi. Check the Jedi Guild listing for one in your area. Or you can try to - If your training is complete - to build your own Lightsaber! Kits are often advertised in Blaster Magazines.

Mass produced Sabers are generally of fairly good value - but quality can vary. Many Jedi go ahead and buy a mass produced Lightsaber and use there Jedi skills to modify it.

Handle materials can be found anywhere... My favorite it the throttle assembly grip off a speeder bike. Gives a really good grip.

Blade color is an important factor in building your saber... blue or green is generally associated with The Force - as Red is with the Dark Side (generally considered BAD, as since it is the easy way - jedi consider it cheating).

Remember - DO NOT use your Lightsaber to do the following:

Clean your nails
Open your Corellian Beer
Start a campfire
Use it as a bug zapper
Try to slice a cold stick of butter
Use while pumping gas
Let your wife use it in the kitchen (they will find a way to dull it up)
Chop of your fathers hand

I want a Light Saber for Christmas

Hey, if anybody's intrested, lightsabers in the Jedi sense are within the realm of possibility. You'd have a plasma blade contained within a magnetic field. Physical matter could pass through the magnetic field, but would be effectively "sliced" by the plasma. Plasma from another lightsaber would be blocked after a fashion by the magnetic field, allowing parries of a sort. You could probably even hold it if you stayed clear of the blade. There are plasma's being used in fusion experiments that are so hot there is no physical matter that could hold them without being vaporized, yet they are safe within the magnetic containment field.

The bottleneck technology is the powersource. You`re either talking batteries far beyond anything we have now, or miniturized fission or fusion reactors. Given the work NASA has done with mini fision reactors for satelites, within a century or two the only things standing in the way of a functioning lightsaber will be; money, intrest, and any stupid laws that may be en-acted in the future. Hopefuly the Libertarians will have control by then. My great-great-great-great grand-daughter will be a custom lightsabersmith. I am taking advanced orders now. If I get a billion or two in advanced purchases, I will be able to develop the technology and have working lightsabers within our lifetimes.

In all seriousness, the coolest of sci-fi weaponry, ultimate in blade evolution, and thoroughly within the realms of reality. Just a matter of time. The future is gonna kick ass!

Thank you for the advices !

I am so happy with my Lightsaber.
I will buy the junior version for my wife
(she want a purple blade !)

I know Fred Perrin has drilled a hole in the handle of his own saber and carry it in the kydex sheath around his neck...but it doesn't work anymore.
"F.... technology tactical gizmo !" he said.
I think he just drill in the power converters and he will be obliged to pick up some new one into Toshi Station...

I am afraid also Sal Glesser is trying to create a loop with the blade of one of his Golden Lightsaber...

Why they want to improve that beautiful design.
(BTW my Chris Reeve Lightsaber got an hollow handle.)

Cheers,
JM

Beware of the imitation "lightsabres" Snickersnee describes. As they are easily manipulated by a magnetic field any attacker can easily disable your plasmasabre or even distort the containing field and have it loop back on you.

Nemo, will Reeve retrofit a Sebenza with a lightsabre blade?

Corduroy, do you think it would be possible to angle the handle so that the beam would come out at say a 10 degree slope? I know this is a bit beyond what you suggested you were thinking of doing but I would like to try it out. I think its slicing power would be significantly improved. Have you seen the new proto's with the serrated blade? Do you think you could swing that mod? I think I can but I don't want to experiment with mine.

I am upset by the current trend of black bladed lightsabers with dark handles, and a good chunk of them have the clip on the plasma ejection end versus the fuel cell end. I hear that there is a new bead blasted lightsaber that has a dull finish but cannot slice through titanium plate without dragging.

Another disturbing trend is the recent string of cheaply made Endorian made knock off sabers (Ewoks work for nuts & berries) that seem to mimic high end lightsabers on the outside, but their guts are pretty lame.

I have ordered a kit because I was told that there was a 7 year wait for the custom that I wanted.

Cliff - while you're right that an angled blade would substantially increase cutting power (my tests let me speculate that it would go from the 3-droid to the 5-droid range), that would negate the greatest advantage of the light saber - when it gets dull from one direction, you can just rotate it 30 degrees or so and use a new direction!

Yek - I agree completely, this "tactical" saber thing is waaaay out of hand. I'll happily (and *carefully*) polish a black coating or beadblast out of your blade for a, um, modest fee. I also have been drilling most of the sabers I work on to accept clip placement at either end.

My roommate suggest a "manual opener" mod, with a squeeze-flashlight style pump, for areas that don't allow autos. I'll see what I can do.

Corduroy, one of the first mods I made to mine was to dremel the handle to mold it to my hand. It now has an ATAK style grip. This does give me much better retention, and the weakness that you rightfull note is not really a weakness to me because I cannot rotate the grip anyway as it would obviously be very uncomfortable.

Hmm, do you think that you could grind the grip right down to a cylinder again and then put a rotation locking ATAK grip on? What I mean is an ATAK shaped grip that I could rotate around the "tang" so to speak to keep a fresh side of the sabre exposed. I was thinking one of the older synthetics like G55 for a sort of "retro" look.

By the way, there is a mod out to allow beam rotation via a switch on the bottom of the handle. However the last time I checked it reduced power output by 25%. It also is not compatable with the regular power boosters that just about everybody uses which means your power supply loses the extra 50% as well that you could be getting from the booster - not for me.

I just got one of those Corellian LightKukris (apparently the Imperial Commandos want to be more like the Gurkhas) from Bill Martino. It is great! At first I thought is was just a Lightsaber (TM) with a brolen blade. I can just sa "Wow."

Living in the Republik of Kalifornia, lightsabers are limited to a maximum beam length of 2 inches (unless you're an imperial storm trooper or sell to them).

Stay sharp! (and may the force be with you)

The light saber is an out the front automatic. Sharpening should only be attempted by a factory technician.

Cliff- Man, am i behind the times! Spend a few light years in the Baldando quadrant and things sure do change. Do you know who has the best price on the newer trilithium ones and are they available with G10 scales?

Also a general question, I'm leaning toward tip-down carry, but are there any tactical advantages to tip-up carry?

Ron, most decent custom makers will put whatever scales you want on it. As for the newer models, just check in the usual places. I have even handled the pentalithium models. They are impressive and all, but I don't like the "art" approach many of the new models have. I am old fashioned and rather the pure function of the older models. Different strokes and all that.

Phantom, they only tell you that to get you to send it back to the factory. Its not that difficult - I think Joe is adding a section on this to the FAQ.

I believe they have a patented "Wave" type opening device that triggers the Actuator with a milisecond delay to facilitate pocket removal and deployment.
I have a question: I have the model 600Z Terlinian Calpet model with the Fractoral Trilithium power cell, where do I pick up the replacement power cells, or are these rechargeable? I spend most of my time in Hyper-space in the former Alderan system and am unable to get to the local K-mart.
Input anyone?

, but they put the beams of light in afterwards with a *magic Special-Effects board*. If you look real closely, you can see the beams bend drastically because the dudes wielding them screwed up.

Stompy,

You should stop to watch all these antique holomovies in 2D from the 20th century...

IMHO I got problem with the Energy cell of mine... It's vibrating to loud and itching the palm of my hands.
But now it's sharp.

Stompy's right, actually. I got into a nasty scene the other day, whole squad of snow troopers, and wouldn't ya know it - the ILM guy was asleep on the job! Man, did I ever feel silly waving a two-foot length of shiny sheet metal at them. To add insult to injury, when I pulled my blaster, it wouldn't work either; I just found myself yelling "bang, bang." I had to deal with the bunch of using an MP5K I had tucked in my robes...VERY embarassing for a Jedi.

Yeah, lemme tell ya, it's a sad day when they forget to draw in your lightsaber effects.

I'm trying to find a suitable target for throwing them because the last time I threw one it had bounced off the target and cut my ford ranger in half!

My friend has the Star Wars role playing game and if I remember correctly, the lightsaber loses some of it's strenght every time it cuts something else than another lightsaber (but I don't think cutting flesh counts). I think the power comes from these special gems or crystals. Gotta crash at my friend's place some day to get some details.
