Question about Scandi edge

I have a question about an edge on a custom blade I justo received

I finally got the blade after a bit of a wait. Stoked to have it, but looking it over I noticed the edge isn't centered.

The maker said it is a Scandi grind. I may be misinformed, but shouldn't it still be centered on the knife? I don't think it will affect performance, but for what I paid, it is kind of disappointing.

Let me know if this will be an issue at all.

Thanks

VP

That looks bad. I am surprised a custom maker would let that out of his shop with such an off center grind. As for use, I bet you wouldn't notice it when cutting things. But sharpening it is another story. I would ask him to exchange it for a properly centered one.

Damn. This was a hassle to get this done and shipped in the first place. No communication at all and it seems like him making this was a hassle. I'll have to contact the maker and see what he says.

Sure that's a Scandi grind, kinda, but it's definitely not an even grind. Looking closely at your second pic, it doesn't even look close.

Well it hamper performance? Probably not, but sharpening may be an issue depending on how you feel about symmetry.

Personally, this would drive me nuts.

It was the first thing I noticed. It's been driving me nuts since I looked at it an hour ago

If you wind up having to keep it, I don't think it would perform badly because of the grind. I just wonder how it will hold up over time when laying it flat to sharpen. But if it's a pain to deal with the maker, I say use it!

I think I'll send an email and my concerns and see how he responds. When I found him on Instagram, I fell in love with his work and style. And he seems to be a quality maker and respected in the community on that. Great reviews and feedback. But this was a hassle to begin with. So we'll see how it goes.

Good luck on hopefully getting a replacement blade  I would think that an established maker would not want to let that slide.

Fingers crossed. Email is sent. I will update as I hear back.

Here is one more. This is the bottom of the tang. Doesn't look straight at all.

Looks like a rough hammer forge right off the coals, hole drilled and blade ground.
Hope you didn't pay much.

If no satisfactory answer is given quickly, I would (I believe others also) like to know the makers name. To show something like this (with other problems mentioned) and not tell us who made it (while saying it was made by a member) is VERY unhelpful to those you are asking for help (advice). My .02

I'm not sure if he is a member on here. I've searched for his name but couldn't find him by his Instagram account. I found him on Instagram a while back. His other work looks great and be gets great reviews. I should have mentioned that in my first post. I'll edit that now.

Thanks for the advice

That is a mess. The maker needs to make it right for you.

If he doesnt, then let us know his name. You could save members here some grief by avoiding him.

I agree. His work on Instagram is great. Well received by people who buy from and the fit and finish always look great. That's what's surprising.

I'll post updates as I hear from him. Hopefully. Communication is spotty from him.

I sent an email this morning about the blade not being straight and told him he needs to fix. I'll give until Monday to hear back. If not I can file a grievance on PayPal maybe and ship the knife back. If I don't hear back and he doesn't make it right I'll put his name up so others don't get screwed around like this

I will. I want to give him a chance to fix it first. To be clear he was not found on the forum. And after searching here for his shop i didn't find him. He is on Instagram

Yes, you should wait until he had a chance to make things right. But, again, if he doesnt, let us know wgo he is.

It doesnt matter if the maker is a member here...a member here might be considering using him, and you will be helping that member, and all the members here, out.

Absolutely will give the name if I don't hear from him. Last thing I want is someone on the site getting jacked around like me. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt too much. This is a perfect example.

I'll update as I hopefully hear from him. Worst case I get my money back and buy a quality blade. Best case, he fixes and makes right.
