Question about trading proceedure...

I'm thinking of cleaning house and putting some knives up for trade. Now I've bought and sold items through ebay and on other forums and the S.O.P. is the seller waits for payment and then ships the item to the buyer.

My question is, with trades, is it common to just ship both items at the same time? Or, does the initial trader wait for the other item, I would assume to verify everything is O.K., before shipping?

Thanks!

just depends, some wanna get the item before shipping, i personally dont have a prob shipping simultaneously to anyone on BF that has a reasnoble number of posts (ie NOT 1 or 2) and have shipped a bunch of knives/cash to members all over the USA w/out any probs, none whatsoever.

that said, i personally am going to shy away from the people trading who want to get my stuff first, hey, this is all about trust, and when i ship i take as much risk as the other party. so, myself, from now on i will offer to ship simultaneously, w/a 3 day period to check out the product. i think this is fair for all involved. but, i'm sure i'll see something i want, and even though i have about 1200 posts, they'll want my knife first, and i'll ship if i want the other knife bad enough, but i wont like it, and will try other options to acquire the knife if i can. imho most wont ship prior to recp't because of fear of theft, or getting a knife that isnt as advertised, BUT when i ship first, i take the same risk imho, ya have to really trust for this to work, imho, and imho the great majority of BF memebers are trustworthy, i just wanna make things more equal, BOTH parties show a little trust. why should i take all the risk??

that said, i would swap w/most on the site w/out reservation, the bad apples get rooted out/booted out fast, and i have seen one member w/LEO experience personally help forumites who have been victimised by bad people recover $$/knives or at least help get the proper authorites involved, no names you know who ya are :))

but generally i like to ship at the same time w/a agreed upon time to examine the knife, and if either party is not happy, just simply return the knives to the original owner. easy enuff, but not always works, as some, really relativly few, have found out. be sure and agree what ya are getting/expecting, be honest in your evaluation (always better to undertsate condition a little vs overstate the condition imho) LNIB is like new in box, hasnt been sharpened/opened much/etc. i use 95-98% to describe a knife w/LIGHT use, cutting paper, mostly carried not used, etc.,

and i know its a worry the first few times, the first trade i made i swapped a spyderco starmate/MT mini SOCOM and $200 for a crawford kasper ti folder, was worried to death, but all went 110%.of course i shipped first that time........

my best suggestion: be scrupulously honest, ship when ya say, a day or so is no biggie, but dont say i'll ship mon and ship fri, not cool, check the other guy for bad posts on good/bad/ugly,and i like a short phone call just to make sure all agree on the major points.

try to treat others as you would like to be treated, do that and ya will have a lotta fun, and acquire some neat knives/stuff.

good luck, have fun, just my .02 worth

Red. Basic trade policy is that both partie's ship same time.
I have shipped first on some deal's for that "special" knife but that is rare and is known up front when making the deal.

Shipping same time both people receive the knive's the same time so there is no lag time in finding out if both are happy and close the deal. My .02 worth.

I have made at least 12 online trades were the items were shipped at the same time with no problems.I always include my Phone # in my address so the other person has another way to contact me and verify that my address is mine and not some mail box rental address like mail boxes ect.

I have a question as well. Is it a foul to offer I firearm in trade?
I realize that it would have to be shipped from one FFL to another.

Hey, Ed...you can pretty much offer anything you want to--all the legal stuff is handled by the individual parties. There aren't any "hard" rules to follow with the trades--just common courtesy.

There is NOT an official policy regarding trades here at BladeForums.
The general accepted practice is that both parties ship their trades at the same time.

However, the parties involved can come to any terms they wish for a trade.

I suggest doing a search in TGB&U forum before trading or selling here, and see if there has been any negative feedback on the parties involved.

For those of you who are new to the forums, You may know this, but I'm going reiterate:
You must be a subscribed Gold, Knifemaker, or dealer member to sell anything on these forums. For more info on this, click the link at the top of the forum page.

Good luck in your trades.

I forgot to add:

This belongs in the GB&U forum, so thats where I'm moving it to.

My .02, call the guy. Talk on the phone, if you're trading a knife worth over $200, get a feel for the other guy (or gal) at .07 a minute, it is well worth it. I've always shipped at the same time and have only had a minor snag from USPS with a great trader (certainly not his fault). Spell out clearly what your expectations from each other are. If your trading a piece with a scratch, tell the other guy. Allow for a 3 day no questions asked "inspection period". This is really important for customs since their is no way to tell how a knife "feels" from a picture.
