How does trading on this site work?? Does everyone just use the honor code, or is there some system Im unaware of?

Sorry for the stupid question!!

...I am fairly new around here, but have done several successful trades already. Each time, we have just agreed to send the knives on the same day and kept each other posted about shipping progress.

The knives I have bought through the forum have been handled the same way....they send the knife, I send the $, we both end up happy.

If you are unsure about someone, just do a couple of searches; one under "The Good The Bad and The Ugly". Hopefully the good experiences are listed as well. If someone has had a bad experience with a trader, it will likely show up there. Secondly, searching for, and reading all of someone's recent posts will give you an idea of the person and how active they are here.

When I describe the process to non-forumites, they are blown away....doubly so when they hear about passarounds!

What Thom said is right on. However, you shouldn't be put off or offended if you're asked to ship or pay ahead, especially if you don't have a lot of history yourself and the other party does.
I've done a lot of deals on the forums and could count on one hand the times there was even any controversy, so jump right in. You'll find that some of the finest people you could ever encounter are on the forums.

This is why I always urge people to leave feedback on trades/purchases, ESPECIALLY for forumites with low numbers of posts or trades. Sometimes you can research a member and see that he has done several trades but there is no feedback for him.

Thanks for all the advise guys! I kinda figured we were to go on the good word of the trader/tradee. I did a trade before on a concealed carry website for a holster on the same basis, it worked out fine also.

What is it about gun and knife people that make this happen? Well, I want a crkt m16 04 tanto (zytel):D any body got one ?

I got the (model #???) next size down in the spearpoint but kinda wish I had gotten its larger brother with the sturdy tanto tip!!!

    :D :D  OMG!!!!! The more I think about this trading thing the more I like it!!! I just got out all my knives and started dreaming about all the ones I want (my wife is simply thrilled to orgasmic levels of course:rolleyes: )

Just think all this time ive been looking at stuff on knife sites I couldve been tracking one down here instead. Ok going to go rumage through all my stuff now!!!!:)

Yeap, when I first got here and read about this, I thought it was crazy. I was SO worried with my first trade. But now, after 100+ transactions on this site, everyone of them successfully, I am still amazed :D

I was interested in purchasing a knife ($400+) from a certain knife dealer and paying by check; I explained I realized he'd want to allow 10 days for my check to clear, blah, blah, blah. He says: 'Let me know the day you send the check & I'll mail the knife.' Whoa! says I...you don't know me from shinola; please wait until you receive my check before sending the knife! His comment: 'I have found that the majority of knife people are very honest and have never had a bad deal!' Speaks mountains! :D

ok, so I'm a week late on this thread, just want to plug my 1/2 dozen pennies in(hell, with the CAD so low, 6 barely covers it).

I've been around the forums a while. I've seen a few ppl get ripped off, some quite bad.

I've seen far more deals going perfect though.

Even my first trade, I was brand new to trades(hadn't really spent any time reading the forums yet). The other guy sent first and let me take a couple days to decide which package was going his way. Was also my first real taste of cross border deals.

Since then, I get a package about every 3 weeks in the mail. I've got 4-5 coming in the next 2 weeks(sent in the last week). Patience and respect are big things when it comes to trust. Considering that 90% of the BFC crew never see each other, and very few talk outside of the shows, all wa have is out word.

Even with the pile of trades and deals I do, I might have 3-4 threads in GBU. The majority is just email, and after both parties are satisfied, I'm off looking for the next deal. A few have really thrown me off, like getting a strop added in a trade, or my soon to be here customs(twin droppoint fixed, deal was for 1 but he took a while on the sheath and tossed in a 2nd for waiting). Those are the ones that get put up.

Thom's advice to read GBU and look at thier posts is great. I've been able to learn a lot about some of the folks in here by reading even a month of posts.

In my opinion, the most important thing you need to do is to set your own standards for your half of the transaction. What I mean, for example, in shipping I always send USPS/Priority with Delivery Confirmation, as a minimum. Even if something legitimate comes up and I'm a day or two late in shipping my half I automatically upgrade the shipping to either Express (overnight) or Airborne 2nd Day. Another personal standard you've got to set is in the description of your knife. I don't care if I've only carried once and there's not a mark on it, at that point it is no longer mint but becomes "carried, with no scuffs/marks and a mint edge." If there's a minute scratch that you can only see in the right light, describe it as such. If you're not the original owner state the fact that you don't know the history of the knife but it "appears to be in excellent condition." Also, send e-mails when you ship, e-mails when you receive their knife and e-mails asking if they're satisfied. If you follow these guidelines you shouldn't have any problems and will end up with a great reputation here and any other forum where you may do any trading. By the way, what've you got for trade? ;)

Yup, tons of perfect trades here on BFC!!! Only one was a trade from hell, let me tell you about it:

Blah, Blah,Blah, Blah,Blah, Blah,Blah, Blah,Blah, Blah,,

I have also traded a lot of knives and gear, and have had only one problem, and that was taken care of when the gentleman was made aware.

As was stated, it is very important to spell out your terms, and to ship when you say you will. Most people here use USPS Priority with delivery confirmation. That seems to be the best way to go. Pictures are worth a thousand words, so if you can provide them, that is a major plus. Otherwise, and accurate description is necessary. Most folks also agree on an inspection period (typically three days) to make sure both parties are happy with the deal. Communication between the parties is very critical. Keep each other advised every step of the way, until the deal is done.

I cannot stress enough; it is very important to spell out your terms, describe the items accurately, and keep the lines of communication wide open. All you have here is your word and reputation. If you don't keep your word while making deals here, your reputation wll suffer very badly, and your deal making days will come to an end.

Have fun in your trades! I know I do.

I work on the “trust system” with anyone having a good trading track record here on BladeForums. If they are a first time trader, I will ask for them to ship first (based on my solid track record) and upon receipt, I’ll ship off my product (a small “price” for them to pay to gain/earn a reputation here). Any other scenario and I’d have to think it over very thoroughly before trading.

I’ve had zero problems (with a handful of substantial trades) and I’ve trade with several users who had no previous trading history. They have "history" now. :)

imho one of the best things to do is at most UNDERATE the condition of a used knife rather than overrate its condition, have had folks tell me they were pleasantly suprised by the condition, better than expected, thats ALWAYS better than worse than expected, that often causes problems.

enjoy, 99.9978655% of folks here are top class people who would rather kiss roseann barr as to screw anybody.
