Question: Cold Steel Eland's sharpness level from factory? Answer: (Graphic) *UPDATE*

Where did you get the thumb studs? I think I need a couple of those.

edit: found 'em

Update: After a day of work and consistent bandaging / super glue, it's healing very nicely.

As a health care professional I have to disagree... the wound margins are not even close and the color is ghastly. As long as you keep infection at bay you will heal up, but you will lose a chunk :)

Yep, too late to stitch that. They won't take. I'd just dump super glue all over it and hope for the best. (Clean it first) if the meat is sticking together you'll be aight. But, get something on it to protect it from busting open. You're still gonna slough off a good few layers all around the perimeter of that cut. It'll leave a deep nasty scar.
Just tell all the chicks you were working in Paris as a super secret undercover operative... A gust of wind blew the satchel off the Eiffel Tower... Thinking quickly, you jumped to retrieve it, only to be left hanging by the tip of your thumb. Sure, it tore a little, but by sheer force of will, and superhuman strength, you managed to pull yourself up again. Documents retrieved, world saved, and one nasty thumb scar to show for it.

What is it with you and good ideas?:D

Must be the gandolf like wisdom you have in your advanced age:p

Man, you are lucky. All 3 of my Kudus were sharp enough to leave a really jagged tearing cut. Not really the slightest bit sharp and extremely obtuse (like 60 inclusive). I must have a 4:45 on a Friday group.

Umm..no it isn't.

Keep it clean and it will heal, just not nicely. Slowly....and as others have said you probably will lose that flap/chunk.

Nicely, no. You should have bandaged that up like I told you, not just plop a bandaid on it. Did you at least use some antiseptic?

But you will survive I guess. If it gets bigger and you can feel your heartbeat in it, get yourself to the doc ASAP though.

I don't understand the fuss about super glue, when i use to box we always glued cuts shut.

There's nothing wrong with super glue--it's just a poor substitute for proper stitches in a case like this. You don't get deep cuts like that in boxing.

Color is a little off because the bandage had just been removed, but I maintain that it's healing nicely.

Also, I'm still carrying the Eland. I think I'll make a point to carry it until my thumb heals.

Yeah...the body can shrug off a lot when the cut is clean...but not that much. I'd get that stitched ASAP or it's probably gonna' heal up ugly. Stitches are temporary, but scars from improper wound care are forever.

Unfortunately for the OP it's much too late. Usually you only have about 8 hours before stitching it becomes useless. That thing is going to heal up all kinds of funky no matter what now, unless of course he decided to cut away the part that's started the healing process already and start over fresh.

Whether you had healthcare or not....that one was a doctor visit for stitches.

Ask me how i know this..........

Guess you'll find out on your own.

I can't help but be curious as to how this turns out. Hopefully it heals well. I have a couple of cuts similar to this that resulted in a life long scar and some loss of feeling in the general area. Nothing severe but it is there. Good reminder to us all to use some degree of caution with our sharp pointy things. Best of luck.
