Question for Knife Nuts - Need some Sympathy

Around my place everybody knows I always have a knife handy so they generally come to me to open a box or package for them.

Well first, I don't hang around with very many people at all. Maybe two or three, and they are all knife carriers. Most are like me and have multiple. I am in a struggle now with my lady friend who I have given three knives. All SAK's, and I'm trying to get here to carry any of the three. I got her to carrying a pistol, she has a ccw, but for some reason she balks at the knife. I believe that she thinks it's unimportant to have a knife. I'll keep working on her.

mushka, I remind you that this is a family friendly forum and that kind of post.....Oh, you meant trying to get her to carry a knife. Sorry.

Never had it happen, but wouldn't take it too seriously. Men & women have only been carrying pocket knives for such tasks for centuries-once we got past cave man.

I occasionally prompt a raised eyebrow and, “Do you always carry a knife?“
My usual response is, “Yes. Why don’t you?”

By the end of the conversation, (and the knife-requiring task) more often than not I hear, “You know, maybe I should carry something.”

I don't usually play off my heritage, but I did refer to myself as "He Who Carries Sharp Objects" after the umpteenth time I opened boxes, clamshells, and stripped the foil from wine bottles for my wife's family. They have never given me any grief for my EDC, and they sure like having me around when tools are needed.

My wife's family always gives me crap about carrying a "weapon" (usually my Manix 2) but they sure are quick to look to me whenever they need something opened. I make a point to say "you could just carry your own knife" every time they ask for mine. I think its slowly sinking in. Christmas is a blast over there lol. I love watching my mother in law struggle to open packages with a dull kitchen knife before finally giving up and asking for mine. Can't wait to see the look on her face this year when I hand her my Socom.
NEVER loan your knife. Especially to your mother-in-law. Offer to get her scissors for her and let her struggle.

I'd be a lot leery of hanging around people that don't use proper tools for opening stuff with. After all, this is the 21st century.
I believe it's more dangerous not using the right tool for a task regardless of how someone responds to the tool in hand.

Dude, I normally carry a Dragonfly or a Delica. Hardly oversized lol
Maybe so. But, to non-knife person, a Dragonfly or a Delica is not a proper knife, just because of the way it looks. I can see why someone could go all weird on you. Of course, you and I know that Spydercos are fine, they just look strange.

A friend of mine just started using a SAK as his EDC instead of CRKT's Tanto M16. His work and social arrangements recently changed. So, he felt that it would be in his best interest to carry a different knife. Maybe you should do the same if people stress out when you pull a folder out of your pocket.

This is one reason I love Alaska. People look at you sideways if you AREN'T carrying a knife. Hardware store, grocery store, mini-mart; at least a half dozen of the patrons are open carrying pistols. Nobody thinks twice about it.

I got offended one day years ago at work. A female supervisor needed a box of supplies opened up and here I am opening up my Spyderco Manix and went at it with the box. Got it open in a couple moves of my blade. She was quite taken by the efficiency and speed as I deftly dealt with the box. In fact she was intimidated by my ability to handle this mid size folder. She made a big deal with another supervisor saying that it was a bit to provocative for me to have a knife like that at work - EVEN AFTER USING THIS SAME KNIFE FOR YEARS IN THE OFFICE. I felt offended because she made it seem like had nefarious intentions with the knife and my skills in using the knife in a useful manner.

I stopped using these folders a few years ago at work but now I am using my Buck 110 and Spyderco Police and Manix again.

Many years ago before I was a knife nut my FIL always had at least two knifes on him and they were usually a big folder and fixed blade. My three other BIL's and I always razzed him about it he took it all in stride. He passed about 12 years ago and now I am now the family knife guy and pulled one out to cut some Carne Asada at a family function a while ago. Everyone got a good laugh and we all realized how much we miss him. Wish he was around to share my new blades with.... RIP Jimmy.

I tend to avoid answering specifics about my knives because I make more than the majority of the workforce I deal with and most don't see the value in a knife that costs more than 30 bucks. People know I carry though, my boss has a SAK and is more amused by my pocket swords :D

Once after having an out patient procedure done at a local hospital, I was standing at the desk checking out. I looked at the wrist band they put on me before the procedure & said, "I guess I won't be needing this anymore."; and before the nurse at the desk could pick up a pair of scissors, I had my Sebenza flipped open & the band cut off. The nurse looked at me in horror & was about to say something when my wife shook her head at her & said, "Don't get him started."
