Question for Knife Nuts - Need some Sympathy

I carry a SAK for most of my little tasks. No one questions the Swiss, they've been safeguarded by our nations affinity for their cheese.

I like Swiss Army knives. Also, their logo is a plus.

One of my favorite aspects of slipjoints is the non-threatening gestalt. You can take out a watch pocket slipjoint in line at Target, estrogen central.

Once after having an out patient procedure done at a local hospital, I was standing at the desk checking out. I looked at the wrist band they put on me before the procedure & said, "I guess I won't be needing this anymore."; and before the nurse at the desk could pick up a pair of scissors, I had my Sebenza flipped open & the band cut off. The nurse looked at me in horror & was about to say something when my wife shook her head at her & said, "Don't get him started."
I see her point.

.... In fact she was intimidated by my ability to handle this mid size folder. She made a big deal with another supervisor saying that it was a bit to provocative for me to have a knife like that at work - EVEN AFTER USING THIS SAME KNIFE FOR YEARS IN THE OFFICE. I felt offended because she made it seem like had nefarious intentions with the knife and my skills in using the knife in a useful manner.
Welcome to the new world.

I've told this story a few times before but it's funny and ironic.

Me and the wife were traveling through North Carolina and stopped at a western boot shop near I-95 in Selma.

My wife bought a pair of boots and wanted to wear them, but she couldn't pull the nylon zip tie off to separate the boots.
Me, being in a "New York state of mind" didn't want to pull out a knife in a public place, so I started struggling with the tie.

The young lady behind the counter looked at me struggling and jokingly said "if you were a southern boy you'd have a pocket knife"
Before I could say anything, she handed me hers...

You know, this same type of thread reappears every few weeks or so, certainly many, many times since I have been around here. It's all variations on a theme, usually someone that seems to want to be butt hurt over their own behavior.

Same old saw...

- I pulled out my knife in front of people to (fill in blank here) while I was at (fill in blank here), and someone fainted and others ran away in terror. Why are people such sheeple? Why are the people that aren't on Bladeforums living in such an uneducated nanny state?

- I am a very responsible guy, and only use my knife as I see fit, but when I pulled out my (fill in blank here... sometimes a large knife, but one a real man can handle) at work to open an envelope I was given dirty and nervous looks by my coworkers. They sure liked the fact I was able to open that pesky envelope, but I got a lot of commentary about my "weapon" later.

- I was at a crappy restaurant that serves boot leather to be cut with dull cutlery, so I pulled out my (fill in blank here) and the *click* of it locking up frightened the people around me. Have they never seen a (fill in blank here) like I have put to practical work? What is wrong with people? Why is everyone but me such a weenie? Man I hate the knife-uneducated public. I almost felt like I needed to ask the waiter for another knife... but if I did, who would know I had a knife, and more importantly, that I wasn't afraid to use it?

First, don't be stupid. Like a lot of folks I know, I carry a couple of knives. Usually, NO ONE ever sees them unless they catch me using them. I carry a small stockman that is a spiffy, good looking little knife. NO ONE has ever said word to me about that knife except that they would like to see it. No one has ever recoiled in horror, admired my manliness, or complained about that knife or its brothers when I pull it out for use.

My second knife is confined to being used at work or when doing outdoor stuff. I always carry a knife of some size that has a 3 1/2 to 4" blade at my construction job. Yet, I keep the pocket clip safely hidden behind my phone case so no one knows I have it.

If you want stay out of trouble and cut down on the drama and your personal frustration just keep your knife in your pocket. Problem solved. Or get something like a SAK as suggested above. I have never, ever seen and eyebrow raised of those knives in the mid sizes, and down here in Texas it isn't unusual for most women and most office workers to have one. As a sidebar, the Benchmade dealer buddy of mine says that the women are on a waiting list for the pink handled mini Griptillian. They sell all they get immediately. Could be (as suggested) the OP needs to find new folks to hang out with, too. Sometimes you have to be a little smarter than the people you are around and know your environment, too.

Yes, I understand what you guys are saying. But I guess I feel that "my rights don't end where your feelings begin". I am legal in owning and carrying a knife even in this socialist state of Hawaii. My coworkers know me as a hard working (I work two jobs) family man who never was arrested and is considerate to all I meet. As I mentioned, I've owned and carried knives on my belt for years. No issues.

I can't wait until Hawaii will be allowed legal open carry. Ha!
