Question for Medford Praetorian owners.....

Do you use your knife, hard use or otherwise? Or, is it a collector's piece, more of a safe queen? Not judging either way. Just asking. I bought a Praetorian G (D2 blade, green G10 & flamed lock side) for the intended purpose of using it for hunting, fishing & outdoor activities. I didn't want to be the first to put wear on a pristine new one, so I was lucky enough to find a user, although still in excellent condition, just not absolutely mint.

Medfords aren't anything special, I'm sure plenty of people use theirs... You said you found a used one, so that should have answered your question to begin with...

Many people aren't too fond of Medford here on BF for certain reasons, so you probably won't get too many responses.

I don't do outdoor stuff. I use mine for random cutting tasks at home and work. I have another one that I bought impulsively. It has the same blade shape and steel, so it doesn't get used and stays in the case.

I've wanted one, just for the hell of it. Can't really imagine what'd I'd use it for though and for that kind of money I want a knife I'm going to use. Or at least be usable :-)

Mike

Thanks for letting me know. I wasn't aware. I think my Praetorian G is an awesome knife, I'm very fond of it. Great fit & finish. Zero functional issues. Broke in beautifully.

You stated you bought the Medford for hunting; but I am sorry to say it will not work well for that purpose. I made a similar mistake when I started deer hunting: I purchased a large thick bladed knife (but it looked really cool!). My experienced neighbor took one look at and told me to throw it away. He brought out a small thin-bladed cheap wood handled fixed blade and showed me how to process the deer with it. For a hunting knife you will want a thinner blade than the Medford.

I see what you're saying. I won't forget my skinner and/or filet knife :)

I'd like to hear more on why people don't like Greg or Medford knives. I've been eyeing one (the micro praetorian and the 187f) mostly because I think the knives look great and would take a beating and stand up to anything I throw at it for EDC purposes and otherwise.

If you're not too worried about fit and finish then get the 187F. I had mine for a day and sent it back. The fit and finish was aweful for $425. Talked to Medford about it and well it was an interesting conversation. I didn't keep it as i stated earlier. The idea of the knife was cool but everything else regarding it was not worth it. Not here to throw stones, cause I think the Praetorian has more attention paid to the details. I however, don't see myself spending that much on a knife.

+1 . I guess I'm out of the loop, because this is the first i heard in terms of people not being to fond of medford knives. Im curious, on the situation. Basics are fine, doesn't need to be a well documented paragraph. I thought they would be good, because they look overbuilt. Again I'm just lost on this whole thing, first i heard. Not shaking the hornets nest, just lost on the topic.

If someone doesn't like a certain knife maker or knife for whatever reason that is their right to do so. However, the forums overall has nothing to do with it, so let's not go all broad brush with this and misinterpret Blues Bender's post. The is a knife forum and we discuss knives, all knives. Some are loved a little more than others.

Your Medford is a user. In my opinion they are high quality products and are some of the nicest original designs on the market, but they are not super special or rare, so use them and even abuse them, they can take it.

You see, that's your problem right there

Just picked my first G up today. Diced up the box it came in better than I suspected. Also cut up a bunch of 1/4" vacuum hose with it also. Did very well at that also. I am going to put the boots to it and see how it performs. I have a feeling that it will do well. Very curious to see how the edge retention is on it.

Still patiently waiting for mine.
It's a knife that does some things well, and other things not so well....
There are different materials to cut, and some of us like to do a little more with a knife then just cut boxes and tomatoes....
Nice to have that option.
Is it the best 'all around one size fits all EDC' ?
That would be a stretch.....

As far as a hunting/fishing knife goes, I don't think it's the best choice.
I would bring it to prep wood for my campfire, but a much thinner grind would work better for the other stuff.

Why make this really stupid comment?
All it does is send this thread in the wrong direction....

I guess it counts as a 'post' but really, if you have nothing to add but this, and then telling the OP he already answered his own question, why even bother?

An old Loveless is special, not a Medford... OP asked a question, I gave him my opinion. And yes, he did answer his own question, sorry if you failed to notice that. If you don't like what I say, then start utilizing the ignore feature, pretty simple.

Btw, your "really stupid comment" has successfully sent this thread in another direction too:thumbup:

Regardless what your opinions are on "overbuilt" framelocks..

If there was a genre of knife that would be a collector's piece or a safe queen, it would certainly not be these knives. I say go ahead and use it as you please. I always thought it silly to keep such knives pristine. They are made with such plain materials as tool steels and matte G10 and titanium for a reason.

That is not an opinion that carries any weight.
It's your own very personal and narrow minded opinion, and it does zero but piss people off...

It's like me jumping into a CRK thread and saying that a 'Sebenza is nothing special'
I don't think you will ever understand this, but I will try:

That may be my opinion, but:

A: It's irrelevant to the point that I need to keep it to myself.
B: It's going to derail what may be a good thread and get it locked.

As this one will most likely be....

There are a lot of safe queen hoarders waiting for certain knives to go up in value.
I hope they know that over-built frame lock + Ti + G10 + tool steel would certainly be the wrong materials to put in a safe.

Wait....
When XM's where over $1K a few years ago, they had the same materials?
Maybe it was the tool steel?!

Value or what's 'special' is personal.
Resale value, and what it will be in the future is a guess.
