Question for the "folksy" guys in here.

I was just wondering how many guys in here hunt with more traditional tools such as a lever action rifle, perhaps carry a revolver- maybe even single action, uses a slip joint for skinning work, and maybe a traditional fixed blade of some sorts for bushcraft?

Does anybody prefer a synthetic stalked bolt action scoped rifle for crawling around the woods or does it not really matter- you still prefer a levergun?

As you can tell by my avatar and my sig I do prefer revolvers. I also prefer the look of wood over the look of plastic on rifles and shotgun. I carry slipjoints daily and my next planned fixed blade purchase is a ship's wheel handled spearpoint bowie...very traditional. I do own semi auto rifles and yes they have synthetic stocks...but that is the way they have always been made so even there it is traditional for them.

I also own SA pistols, "tactical" framelocks and liner locks...I just prefer the reliability of some of the older technology and if traditional will do the same job as the "advanced" technology will do I tend to go old school.

I'm sure there's places to carry stainless and plastic guns. For me its blued steel and walnut, wheel guns, and the more knife the better in the woods though it usually ends up being a slipjoint.

iI prefer carbon steel slipjoints, blue steel and walnut or stag SA revolvers, and about all I ever hunted with were muzzleloading rifles. I own some of the black stuff, and just bought two plastic autoloading pistols, just because, but I don't like 'em.

I prefer the Marlin levers over the Winchester, and have an old Savage 99 in .358 Win.

I don't hunt, but I prefer my guns to be made of wood and steel. I own a Browning Hi-Power, a CZ 452 with a beech stock, a couple of 1911s, and a Ruger 22/45. The Ruger is the only gun that has plastic on it. It was my first gun, and I have come to appreciate it, but it is the only gun that I have never really fallen in love with.

I am with the rest of the Gents here. All my gear is traditional and in some cases down right primitive.. Case in point I like to bow hunt during bow season and several years back, gave up my compound bow with all its buzzers and bells for a long bow to get back to my roots. It is so much more fun to hunt with just my bow, a few arrows and a kinfe. And I realize I don't need all that additional gear, not to mention how quiet and disciplined I've become..

When I get north of the Shotgun zone I use a Winchester 94 in .30-30.
The public land hunting grounds in MI don't lend themselves to long, clear shots at deer. If you find a place like that its usually surrounded with orange vests and hats.

I do use a more modern fixed blade but carry slipjoints when hunting as well.

By the way, not to get off topic but, my son leaves in July for Great Lakes. He has chosen Hospital Corpsman as his career.

Every deer I've ever taken has been with an old Steven's Savage side-by-side 12 ga. I've taken dozens, if not hundreds of rabbits and squirrels with that same gun over the years. When I want to put meat on the table, it seems I always reach for the old "Elmer Fudd" gun. It was my grandfather's, and has always served me well. I have a Remington 870, but I prefer the side-by-side, because it's quieter (doesn't rattle as much) and gives me two different chokes- each with a separate trigger. In dense woods, if you can't kill something with two rounds of 12 ga.- then you're doing something wrong.

I don't hunt but have zero issues with hunting as long as folks eat what they kill. I would hunt if I had to in a survival situation. I just have never hunted before.

I do like friction fire building and I do use traditional slippies, modern tactical style blades, and also good old 1095 fixed blades for doing this stuff.

I'm an equal opportunity knife user. :)

As far as firearms go, I prefer the newer stuff. I'm a fan of the HK USP .45 and also the Glock 17. The good old Winchester .30-30 is a good one too.

Sunnyd,

Much respect for you bro. I got lots of respect for people that hunt with a bow. Good stuff.

Yup, my hunting rifle is a Winchester 94 30-30, and my preferred handgun is a revolver, a SA, Berretta Stampede sheriff; basically a Colt 1873 in birds head and 3" barrel. I like DAs too, but am faster with SAs, and a cowboy at heart(born 140ish years too late) so I stick with SAs.. I've given up on carrying sheath knives, but have carried a nessmuk or kephart, and a simple clip point for woodscraft.

Love the bow sunnyd!
I am in progress on my second attempt at making a selfbow.. slowly-snapped the first in half.

Ditto...

I am a "traditionalist" in most ways... Although I hate being labeled as something. I prefer hand tools-woodwork or mechanic. Pre 20th century tech, and in a lot of cases pre 18th or 19th century... all my fires I start with fire piston or flint and steel. I say to folks that I HATE technology but I don't... The computer is fun and a great way to learn.. I just prefer to not use modern stuff it if there is a way not to. older = simpler/easier for me.

I hunt elk with a .54 cal muzzleloader.
I hunt deer with a Winchester 94.

SUNNY ,your *snakeskin* longbow ,,,gave me chills.

Its GORGEOUS !!!!

Thanks FOG2,

She is a handmade Osage bow with good flat limbs with an eastern diamondback Rattlesnake skin covering the front side. The Rattlesnake skin works like the best natural camouflage breakup pattern ever. She has Moose stag overlays on the knocks and is 62 inches end to end. 54 lbs at a 28 inch draw. She is deadly accurate and quite and made with all primitive tools too.

Thanks David,

During the bow season I'll tell you hunting with this set up somehow brings me closer and akin to the real Native Americans of this country. Its a good feeling.

Chris,
I went through Boot Camp in July 06 and by the time I got to corps school, my second week there we had snow- ALOT of snow- and shoveling. I have some fond memories of corps school though. I hope he likes the Marine Corps- everyone goes through field med school and it helps quite a bit to be in shape.

Thanks Doc!
My boy was born and raised here in Michigan. A little snow isn't going to phase him. He should be used to shoveling by now. :D

By the way, his hunting set up is a 1961 870 Wingmaster and an equally old Imperial Frontier Drop point skinner.

Nice! feel free to post pics if you'd like. I will get some pics of my setup next week while I'm away at my mom's in the Blue Ridge mountains.

SunnyD-

You are a madman!- If you live in Florida you'll have to take me hunting with you once or twice! I really like your setup.

Rupe,

Congrats to your son. I use a 1977 870 Remington that I purchased new at the J C Penney store in Gainesville Florida, so now I know I am good company! :)

Doc,

I'm ready. Where do you live exactly?

Gents, let's take the personal communication to email or PM. Thanks.

I shot my deer with the t\c hawken 54 caliber with spit patch and roundball.
All my other hunting needs I use my 25 year old Mossberg 500 20 gauge.
The Puma fixed blade is only 15 years old and the trapper was made in the 80's.
I have tried "newer and better" but have always went back to the old tried and true.
God Bless
Tracy
